Thanks for the memories and the great example.
I tip my hat to you.
John Stockton is the perfect professional ball player. He thrilled us all every time he took the court. Jazz fan's may have never had a championship to celebrate, but I wouldn't trade all the games the Stockton played for the Jazz for any number of Championships. We had the privledge of watching a champion play his heart out every night. That ain't bad.
Great story - one of the best Jazz articles I have seen in some time.
I have always loved John Stockton, the best overall true point guard in history, with Oscar Robertson being his only real competition for that title. John was the driving force (no pun intended) for so much of the good that happened for the Jazz. John and Jeff Hornacek are two of the most classy, consummate professionals I have ever witnessed firsthand in any sport.
John is not only the leader in assists and steals, he is probably the all-time leader in character, professionalism, and smarts. He always brought his "A" game every night and exemplified a "team-first" attitude that served as a role model for incoming players. Great job - we miss you!
Jerry also deserves his spot. He can look back on his career, knowing he always gave his best effort, despite all the second-guessing "experts" on the boards who would have won five championships by now...
Stock, you are my hero. Go JAZZ!!
John Stockton has always been my hero. Know and believe in your place, don't back down and all put inn 100% effort are great traits.
John has been the perfect player in my book from when I started watching him when i was 8 years old. The day's of the true classy player ended when Stockton hung up his jersey. Not only was he classy, but he was great. A great man, who loves him family more then basketball(and he loves Basketball) only shows what type of individual he is, Thanks John
The game will never have a player of Stock's caliber ever, period. A consumate professional, leader, example, on and off the court. For me, I look up to Stock more on how he coped with never winning the championship. He understood that was not what life was all about. He was essentially, bigger than the game. He is a true champion in my eyes and is the ultimate sport hero of all time. Farve-Ha!, Kobe-Whatever, A-Rod-don't kid yourself. I believe there will never be another John Stockton ever period. Congrats STOCKTON you are simple the GOAT. (Greastest of All Time), even though you would never have the audacity to tell anyone about it.
since Stockton retired. It's no longer worth the time I would spend. Stockton was my idol in elementary school. I even wrote him once and he sent me an autographed photo. I still have it.
John Stockton was the best player The Jazz ever had or ever will have. In my book he is #1. He was my fav player and since he left I don't have the same ambition to watch like before. He always gave more then 100% to the game and he was incredible. You just don't see that same kind of ambition in today's players. And he was very humble!! You don't see that either!
The two sports figures I have admired the most throughout their careers are Steve Largent (Seahawks) and John Stockton. They played their respective sports with un-equaled professionalism and did nothing off the Court/Field to embarrass themselves, their team or their families. I am not one who makes heros out of sports figures. I believe that puts too much pressure on mostly undeserving and unprepared shoulders. However as a father who uses all available resources to motivate, encourage and inspire my children........Thank you John for your worthy example!!
I was a Rockets fan his whole career but I still loved Stock. I hated that he hit that dagger over Barkley because I really believe the dream, Cylde the glide and the round mound of rebound would have beat Jordan. Oh well, it is too bad Stock never got a ring. If the Jazz ever look like they will win one they should sign him to a 10 day contract so he can get a ring that year. Class act as a player and a person.
Stockton's lifetime assist record will never be broken.
I loved Stock's game for the most part, but as time goes by I realize how much the Jazz success hit a concrete ceiling largely due to two big influences of Stock - his refusal at times to take shots when we needed it more from him, and the way he and Horny were brutalized by the Bulls length. We needed Deron's size, physical skills willingness to do more himself at times, and could live with a few less assists. D-will - Stockton 2.0 and counting.
I've always been a Celtics fan, since the days of Russell and Havlicek, two of the rare players that could stand alongside Stockton as players and individuals.
That is just it. John was a real hero. Today's athlete is compeled to serve the community. Stock didn't want the pub which is what charity is he helped so many people that we will never know about. Far more important than being a great baller is to be a great person and he left no doubt about either.
Great article, great comments, but most of all GREAT person, athlete -- bar none!!
Thanks for making those 19 years so enjoyable!! Stockton - We truly do MISS YOU!!
Ernie Banks never won a world series but he busted his teeth for his team and is without a doubt one of the best baseball players ever. For his efforts and his LOYALTY (Yes, I'm looking at you, Mailman), he was rewarded by Cubbie fans with his only "title"; Mr. Cub.
John Stockton may not have a ring but he absolutely has a title. He was, is, and always will be Mr. Jazz.
Stockton: Pound for pound the strongest guy to ever play in the NBA.
Want to know why John Stockton was so great?
Because he would work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work and on and on and on and on.....
Only idiots fail to admire that.
Good on ya!, John, good on ya!!!
Stockton is the man! I always wear his throw back jersey when the Jazz come to town and its amazing to see the reaction of non-jazz fans. No matter if they love or hate the man, they all respect him.
