I was never under the impression this was to be marketed to anyone under the age of say, 12 or 13. I've only seen the trailers and never felt like they were marketing towards young children. Where did you get the idea that such was the case?
After Coraline, I will never watch another one of this guys films again.
FYI Tim Burton did NOT write, direct or produce Coraline. Henery Selick did and he had nothing to do with 9.
I think I will still enjoy this, although the lack of character development (and humor) will be a lost opportunity. I actually greatly enjoyed "Coraline", which I thought was original and deeply involving.
But yes, people need to work their way past the expectation that animated films are for children. "Coraline" was the perfect example of an animated film that, despite a minimal amount of offensive content, just wasn't suitable for children, and I suspect this will likely be the same.
Um, Coraline was made by an entirely different group. Sheesh.
lol.. I love the fact that anything dark is automatically thought of as NOT for children.
My 5yr old son loved Coraline and Nightmare Before Christmas. If he wants to see this movie then Im all for it. You have to look at the maturity of your child before you look at his/her age. Some can handle darker movies, others can't yet.
" After Coraline, I will never watch another one of this guys films again."
So after watching Henry Selick's film - one of the best of the year, incidentally - you've now decided that you'll never watch another Shane Acker film? Interesting.
I think people are getting confused over Tim Burton--the publicity point of Coraline was that it was directed by the same director of "Nightmare Before Christmas" which most people assume is Tim Burton. However he was just the producer, like he is in 9. Henry Selick the director of both Nightmare Before Christmas and Coraline.
Also, where do the reviewers get off saying it's advertized as a "family film" or "for children"? the tag line i've seen on it says "Definatly NOT your little brother animated movie"?
Surprise surprise Jeff gives out another 2 star review. If any of you are planning on reading more of his reviews ill save you the trouble. Indy films get 3 stars, foreign get 3 stars, Pixar gets 4 stars, and everything else gets 1-2 stars. The story in this show is fantastic and compared to other recent movies its actually original. This story is very engaging it sucks you in, I agree with the comment about Connelly and woods voice acting, but the rest were phenomenal. This easily deserves 3 stars. Open your mind a little Jeff there are other movies out there aside from Pixar, Indy, and foreign films.
mr vice wants every movie to be like the godfather i swear. Dont go off reviews, they are completely biased. Just go see them. make your own call
Of COURSE they are biased, they are his opinion, like any review. He happens to know film better than whoever is making this comment. You don't need to agree with a critic all the time, you just need to understand him and know he is consistent. If you like big blockbusters, know that Jeff doesn't unless they are Spider-Man.
I just have to wonder why so many people who want to disagree and complain are reading the review in the first place?? You say "don't go off reviews" in a comment about a movie review... He is paid to give his opinion and review the movie, this is exactly what he did! I'm always confused by the anger over a movie review. Why are you reading Jeff Vice's column if you don't like what he has to say?
this movie looks, cool, i totally want to see it, it's not very often an animated movie is rated PG-13
I can't believe my husband and I are the only ones who saw depth and symbolism in "9." There was a creator, and a part of his soul lived in each of his creations; there was an adversary who built machines (one looked like a dragon, one a beast, one a serpent, one a large bird)-- all of them trying to destroy men and imprison souls. There was a leader with a miter, a staff, and what could have passed for a menorah, in the remains of a large church. The leader was afraid of the beast and evil machines, but the hero looked to the source-- the words of the creator -- to figure out how to free the imprisoned souls. The survivors say, in effect, that they can remake the world as they choose. I felt like I was watching a really creative Book of Revelations ... sort of. Not one review of the movie mentioned any of this. Am I way off base?
I truly enjoyed it!
I absolutely loved this film. It completely appealed to my love of old-timey, science-y, dark, alchemical, aged, strangeness. Beautiful story, GORGEOUS to watch. Dark and lovely. I was spellbound. [I want a "6" doll.]
