Not many Sportswriters would even admit they'll eat "crow".

As for singing in the shower "rise and shout", I'm just darn glad I don't live next door to you, you could possibly be wearing the colors "blue"!!! TIC

As far as it goes for BYU, kudos to them! Problem I'm having is, the fans don't know when to move onto the next game. The season has just started, and they act as if they just won a BCS bowl bid.....sigh, another reason why I dislike BYU and their fans, they just don't know how to quit eating the Capt'n Crunch and Green Jello and bounce off the walls for weeks to come. Go Tulane!!!

We knew it was Benson the whole time. All things considered BYU couldn't turn down playing in this game and fortunately it turned out to be a great antidote for recovering from two dismal losses to close out last season. Harmon said BYU would lose by 3 TDs so I am not sure we can pile on you too much for questioning the reasoning behind playing OK in home territory. However you may want to consider the witness protection program!
Ute Fan in MS | 5:36 a.m. Sept. 8, 2009
It's only one game Doug, they haven't won the National Championship yet. And most likely they won't but they did play a heck of a game. Way to go BYU, Utah has paved the way for you to get to the Championship game, now all you have to do is win. Oh, don't forget you still have to play TCU and Utah, not to mention a good FSU team that should have one the game last night. Getting to the BCS isn't as easy as most BYU fans think it is. Most of them think Utah lucked into twice before, now the Cougars can find out for themselves just how good you have to be to do it. Hope their up to the task, but only time will tell.
liveinOK | 5:43 a.m. Sept. 8, 2009
Well Doug you were not the only one who though BYU was going to lose. I live and work in OKC and eventhough I am a U of U fan I wore a BYU shirt to work on Friday. Fellow workers (OU fans) were quick to make funny remarks and actions as in "throwing up" that I would dare to wear this shirt. Now it is Monday moring and I am going to work with a big smile on my face and see if any of the OU fans can match your crow eating.
Bob in line | 5:55 a.m. Sept. 8, 2009
We fans need to gloat and why not go after the sportswriter, right? haha

Fact is, all but the most diehard predicted that BYU would lose. I thought they would but really hoped they would play very respectable. I felt that even if BYU lost but kept it close it could help us. Better than Northern Iowa.

Any way, no need to get to 'I told you so' but just enjoy. Now to make sure there is no let down against Tulane!

I would love nothing more than to see a quote in your next article from Bryant (Bo Diddley Tech) Gumbel. Come on Doug. I'm sure you can get him to come off the golf course long enough to say something about the game. :-)
Rockhound | 6:19 a.m. Sept. 8, 2009
Take it easy Doug. It is no big deal. Most of us just blow you off anyway because of your anti-BYU bias.
Satisfied | 6:21 a.m. Sept. 8, 2009
It wasn't very sincere, but we'll take it...
Mr. Swoop | 6:25 a.m. Sept. 8, 2009
It's okay that you were wrong, Doug. It's easy to miscalculate odds. But the victory over Oklahoma will make it much sweeter when the Utes crush BYU.
Anonymous | 6:26 a.m. Sept. 8, 2009
Way to put your foot in your mouth...doug
An interesting game | 6:28 a.m. Sept. 8, 2009
When you wrote that, I wrote a comment basically saying, not so fast.

I still remember the BYU game where they were behind SMU by 30 or so points with just a little over 3 minutes left in the game ... and they ended up winning.

I saw the second half of that game live. There were people walking out of the stands going home. No matter which side one was on, this was not a game to miss, a mirical happend that day.
Cougar8 | 6:37 a.m. Sept. 8, 2009
Hillarious article. It wasn't so much you predicted a loss, you did it with so much venom. Nevertheless, you owned it today. Funny article, your family can rest easy now, you can walk out in public withouth worrying about water balloons being lofted at you from three story windows.
happily wrong | 6:39 a.m. Sept. 8, 2009
I, for one, agreed with Doug's first article when he wrote it. I was the one concerned for the safety of the Cougar's bodies. I thought they would be the ones in the news for game injuries. Not to mention the fact that I thought they had no chance of winning.

How nice it is to be wrong.

(I could do with some more wrongness: ie, the economy really will come roaring back, world peace is just around the corner...

Oh, AND ONE MORE--it would be fun to be wrong on my personal opinion that the BCS WILL NEVER GET IT TOGETHER.
DesertYankee | 6:41 a.m. Sept. 8, 2009
Sir, your dining on crow is quite satisfactory in light of the absoluteness of your previous column. But it is not your readers, or even BYU fans, that you should apologize to. I believe that you should apologize to Bronco Mendenhall, BYU football players and the wise men at the office of the BYU Athletic Director for making this crucial victory possible.

Saying, as you did, that scheduling OU was a big mistake because the team might lose the game shows that you are not a risk-taker by nature. In winning the game by taking the risk of losing on national TV, BYU has shown the NCAA that the BCS may be BS. Have faith man. Gird up your loins and step to the front. Oh, and just let me say that I am a Ute fan!
Ute | 6:46 a.m. Sept. 8, 2009
After reading this all I can say is at least you admitted it. Tell you buddies Harmon and Call they owe the Utes plenty of articles like this one.
Tarbo | 6:48 a.m. Sept. 8, 2009
I feel sorry for your wife. You not only shoot yourself in the foot but now she has to suffer through your singing in the shower.
Richard | 6:51 a.m. Sept. 8, 2009
You were not alone in your skepticism nor are you the only one eating crow. I too, am glad to say I was wrong. Send your recipe for crow pie to the BCS.
Dennis | 6:56 a.m. Sept. 8, 2009
Your were right. Pure Dumb Luck has a way of popping its head up once in a while.
Ann Cannon | 6:57 a.m. Sept. 8, 2009
I enjoyed your piece, Doug. Best wishes.
ron | 7:09 a.m. Sept. 8, 2009
doug: i didn't read your article last week, but your item this morning has started my day off in a a lighter moment.thanks for standing up.
Aggie Man | 7:10 a.m. Sept. 8, 2009
I bet you are glad that you didn't pick the Aggies to beat the Utes too last week.
SantaClaraCoug | 7:11 a.m. Sept. 8, 2009
Doug: I enjoy your stuff! I was surprised with your "Going out-on-a-limb" article and I am pleased to see you eat crow and do it graciously. As for the comments of Mr. "Keep Writing Doug". This celebration on the Oklahoma game should go on at least through today. Definitely OK to also savor it for a while this season and bring it up anytime a sour-grapes Utah fan gets mouthy. Good fans will be happy to see the success of all teams within Utah and save their taunts for the late in the year. Take care of Tulane this week Cougars. After their game last night, Florida State appears to have some offense and I'm anxious to see what we can do to both Tulane and Florida State. Hopefully the Utes can take Oregon, but Doug - if you hold true to form - you would admit that the Utes don't have the team they did last year and Oregon will likely win that game.
Dr. J | 7:12 a.m. Sept. 8, 2009
Nice job of falling on your sword Doug. Only really stupid people missed the fact that your article was an attempt to lighten the heavy expectations the fans placed on the team, and give the team a ready alibi if they lost. You are a team player. And the fans that busted your chops are usually the same ones jumping off the band wagon when the team loses.
Lighten Up On Robinson | 7:20 a.m. Sept. 8, 2009
Yes, Robinson went out of his way with that article by saying it was such a bad idea to so much as schedule OU. But can anyone name one single sports writer who predicted a BYU upset? I am a HUGE BYU fan and my prediction was OU 59-21. If I recall, the biggest BYU homer in the universe, Dick Harmon, had BYU losing by 20. I'm sure all BYU fans HOPED BYU would somehow pull off the big upset but very few really thought they could. Robinson just wrote it down - which is what he is paid to do. So feel free Cougar fans to crow about how wrong he was. But just don't make it personal and remember that he was FAR from alone.
Dennis | 7:21 a.m. Sept. 8, 2009
It looks like this weeks polls agree with your original article as well.
Joseph Santos, Provo | 7:22 a.m. Sept. 8, 2009
BYU this year is a much better team, than expected. On the other hand I am glad the Oklahomas last punt was off the mark, otherwise we all will be singing a different song.
Anonymous | 7:23 a.m. Sept. 8, 2009
you were a missed field goal away from being dead on. be who you are and who cares what others think.
Robinson | 7:33 a.m. Sept. 8, 2009
Has a nice mullet. No wonder he is a Ute fan.
Deth | 7:34 a.m. Sept. 8, 2009
...and now you wrote an article about yourself. Wow.
Anonymous | 7:38 a.m. Sept. 8, 2009
Rough week, Doug. You were wrong about BYU, and you are wrong about your silly pledge article. Maybe there is oxygen depletion going on. Maybe the lactic acid has crept up into the brain cells. Take a deep breath and stop working for a while.
Biased Robinson | 7:44 a.m. Sept. 8, 2009
Didn't this guy have a son who played for Utah? There are no greater anti-BYU fans than the turncoats. Robinson and Whittingham have both turned on their alma mater and they should be ashamed. I wish Robinson would just go away quietly, but he'll still be there day in and day out knocking the school that he should hail.

These guys are the biggest impediment to BYU's moving into the nation's elite because some people think they must have something to say since they went to the Y.
WASP | 7:46 a.m. Sept. 8, 2009
Shucks, I missed a good game. Love suspense though.
Being accused of being blind as an official, but addmittedly hard of hearing, I can only say I prefer
these astigmatisms compared to being a biased writer. Good recovery Doug.
bosoxnut | 7:53 a.m. Sept. 8, 2009
Dennis: The new polls haven't been released yet.
PrepFootballFan | 7:55 a.m. Sept. 8, 2009
There was nothing weird about the original article. Everyone thought BYU would get killed. It just showed once again your enormous anti-BYU, homer U bias. Something a writer shoudn't have. Just can't see you writing the same thing about the U under any circumstance. Agree with Rockhound comment above. Been blowing you off for years because of it.
alternate | 8:05 a.m. Sept. 8, 2009
Unless I didn't read correctly either the original or the follow-ups, I never saw anything about money. I believe this was the reason BYU cancelled ASU and played the game. They needed the money. If Doug would have said that up front, we would all be over to the national news by now.
Farid @ Pocatello | 8:11 a.m. Sept. 8, 2009
Doug,
You're still right, though the end result wasn't what either of us expected.

The chance of the Cougars getting blown out, and the team looking like a very middle-of-the-road team, and the Cougars playing defensive the rest of the season, was too great to overlook for a 1 in 500 win.

All the really big wins, at Pittsburgh, vs. Miami, and now against Oklahoma, happened early in the season before the opposition could get a feel for what BYU was capable of.

Today, I still think this was a bad game to play.

I clearly remember the Cougar's 0-3 start in the early 90's (losses were to Florida State, Penn State and UCLA) and though the team went on to run the table and win the conference, things never felt right for the remainder of the year.
Wow, weak follow up | 8:12 a.m. Sept. 8, 2009
"I'm not sure why predicting the home team to lose big makes me biased and horrible."

No, this one article doesnt make you biased. It's all the other articles that you write about BYU that make you biased. It goes back to how you "slammed" a young college kid for saying that he believed in a higher power, and that wasn't fair because you son played for Utah. I follows through all of your other articles.

I believe a more honest follow up story would have you admitting that you are a Utah fan, and you write stories based upon how you feel about BYU.

And OK was not "one missed fieldgoal from being dead on". They did not have a shot at making it. They had a better shot at a 4th and 14. If they had made the FG, BYU had enough time to come back and hit their own FG. You were poor OK coaching, excellent BYU coaching, and Hall, Kayria, Pitta, George, Jacobsen, the BYU defense and offense away from being dead on.

Naw, you missed it because you were biased, and will miss many more if you remain biased.
Get it Right, Folks | 8:14 a.m. Sept. 8, 2009
FOr those of you who are calling Mr. Robinson a turncoat, I happen to know for a fact that he graduated from ... Utah State University.
American Citizen | 8:15 a.m. Sept. 8, 2009
Apology accepted. Way to go, Doug. Nobody gets it right every time. I admire a guy who can admit he was wrong. Have you ever considered politics? Medicine?
Anonymous | 8:15 a.m. Sept. 8, 2009
Hey I'm a BYU Cougar fan and of course we beat Oklahoma so what I have to say is, in your small faces Oklahoma we beat you.
Alan | 8:16 a.m. Sept. 8, 2009
I remember the band article. That was the best non sports related sports article ever.
How pathetic | 8:17 a.m. Sept. 8, 2009
just because he writes for Desnews he has to apologize for not being a BYU homer, Like there isn't enough of those around..? They probably demanded him to write this at desnews. He should have put some of the nasty e-mails in here that I'm sure he recieved, and just said "thanks BYU fans- can you tell me more about your church?"
LaVar the Utah Cat | 8:20 a.m. Sept. 8, 2009
Congrats to BYU. It seems (I hope correctly) that the BYU team and fans are being less arrogant this year than before. Perhaps they have realized how offensive the "Quest for Perfection" was to "non-BYU" folks. How their unjustified arrogance put off everyone else. How "non-BYU" fans/teams loved it after the TCU game; Utah game; Arizona game last year. Let us hope they continue to be reasonable in their conduct and attitudes. Then most fans will be supportive of BYU in non-league games for the good of the conference
Your Kids | 8:38 a.m. Sept. 8, 2009
I guess you should put your kids back in those difficult classes
to Farid@Pocatello | 8:38 a.m. Sept. 8, 2009
And that is why you live in Pocatello. Narrow-minded man who can't acknowledge that it was a good or great idea for BYU to play Oklahoma. I suppose you wish for more Northern Iowa games, or a game against that small time school in Pocatello. Even after seeing the terrific results from winning this game you have the temerity or ignorance to state "Today, I still think this was a bad game to play." Glad I don't work with you or live near you.
Coug in WA | 8:46 a.m. Sept. 8, 2009
Doug, You, arrogant LaVar the Utah Cat and Mr. Swoop can sit and comfort one another. Misery loves company and all three of you are pretty miserable.
Thank You | 8:49 a.m. Sept. 8, 2009
We appreciate the sentiment. I actually went to the game and I'll admit I went with fairly low expectations. It was last year's TCU game and the Perfection campaign that had me wound up and expecting just that - perfection. This time around I went expecting only that we might get a chance to win and hoping and praying that we wouldn't get blown out.

Instead the Cougs showed the world (and me) that they have matured in so many ways from last year (and even taught that maturity to their freshman)!

If what I saw in the players on the field at the end of the game on Saturday stays through the season, they will not go into this week's game with Tulane or any other game this season with any expectation other than that if they don't give their all, they won't meet their goals. An FSU win, A TCU win, and YES - a UTAH win will come - one-by-one, but only because our boys in blue will be ready mentally and physically! GO COUGARS! GO MWC!
Dell | 8:57 a.m. Sept. 8, 2009
Watched the FSU-Miami game last night. FSU looked significantly better than OU. Saw alot of plays used that BYU has had trouble defending in the past. We should be able to pass against them though. But I think that FSU will be a very difficult game with about a 50:50 chance of winning.
