Is it possible to wear out a DVR? The OU fans said it wouldn't be close bit they
were wrong. They should have a bit more confidence
To 9:48 p.m.,It costs more than $1 million to get the entire BYU
football team to Texas and back!
BYU got $1.5 million, OU got $2.5 million for that game. So what was your point
again? Yep, thought so.
I was one of those non-believing Ute fans who didn't think BYU had a chance. I
was wrong and I now admit it. In fact, I'm really worried about the season-end
Utah vs. BYU matchup. I think BYU has the talent to be a contender and I'm
worried sick about a possible Provo win. C'm on Utah, start preparing now or
you won't have a shot. This BYU team is good.
This was one of the few times I was pulling for the Cougs. Way to go BYU!!!
The irony is that, as I understand it, they Y was paid nearly $1 million for the
opportunity to play OU. As long as you're getting 7 digit payouts to play on
the road, wouldn't get too uppity and proud. (something about pride going
before the fall may fit in here, ya think?)
Great win! Now you are 3-16 against ranked teams. You eaked out a one point
victory against a very overrated Oklahoma team. I would say do it in January
when it matters but you wont get that chance beacause the entire MWC is
pathetic. And please stop with all the BCS talk. it is a long season and you
still have FSU, TCU and Utah to worry about!
Hey if they played Florida the way they played OU last night they may have made
the game respectable with them, too.
A few observations not mentioned here:1. OK was playing with a
converted TE at Center. Not only was this center small, he was confused. Center
calls the OL plays. The OK OL was confused all night. Their confusion led to
Clausen's big hit.Jaime Hill's defense out-thunk OK's poor confused converted
center. This nullified any edge they had in talent.2. It's the OL
that makes a great quarterback. Bradford's numbers last year were the result of
a great OL. No OL = no Heisman. End of story.3. Here's hoping BYU
can put this win in perspective. They did not play a perfect game. Coach M said
it best: they played a "gritty" game. Whether this is a one-game fluke or a
sustained effort over a whole season only time will tell.
ok get over it beat Florida and then lets talk about how "good" you are
Great job BYU. After last year sugar bowl and now this there is no excuses for
the Mtn West not getting an automatic bid. Good job. Good luck rest of the
year. If you lose a game it ends up meaning nothing. Great win!!
I was at the game, drove down from Utah, and it was amazing!A great
start to what can be a magical season! Congrats Cougars!
How many points did Bradford help OU score in the first half which he played in
ALL OF SAVE O.7 SECONDS? 10 points, that's it? don't use the Bradford excuse
unless you plan on also pointing out the losses of UNGA and Buaman and us down
to our one Third String O-Lineman.With Unga We wouldn't have
faltered on those 3rd and one plays. The ONLY TD that OU had was when they had
a very short field with which to work. If they had to drive the length OUR D
Steped up and stoped them, EVEN WHEN BRADFORD WAS IN. O'Niel hangs on to the
balls instead of fumbling into the end zone and we have 21 points to end the
game. BYU GREAT JOB! Defense Best you've played in a long time you didn't give
up any BIG PLAYS. Give Stevenson the nod at kicker a missed FG (24
points at the end of the game) and that last kickoff could've lost that game
for us reminds me of another Paiyne in Boise. To excuse making BYU
Fans please become turncoats we DON"T NEED YOU!!!!
Although a BYU alum and fan, I have to admit I was greatly leary of this game.
OU - the 1st game - and away. Yikes. But they did it! Great win for BYU and MWC
! This not only helps us, but TCU and the Utes too.
Ha! Ha! I must be out of my mind then because I've read all 561 comments on
here! :-)Actually, the comments pretty much go like this:1 - BYU rocks!2 - Good job BYU but get ready to lose in November
(Ute fans)3 - Way to flex your muscles to the BCS! (MWC fans)4 - BYU would have lost if Bradford was in! (the hard-core stubborn
Yewts and OU fans)5 - the expected pro-BYU replies about how
Bradford didn't matter in the first half (BYU vs OU yards, the first half score,
etc) so why should he have mattered in the second halfYeah, that
about sums it up.FANTASTIC JOB, COUGARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's laughable that there are 561 comments here. I haven't read single one, so
if I'm just saying what others have said, I apologize:No one (in
their right mind) is going to sit and read over five hundred comments, so no one
(in their right mind) is going to see yours. Or mine.I bet there
are THREE types of letters being repeated over and over in different words:1) BYU rules!2) Just wait until the Utes beat BYU!3) This is such a waste of time! Thanks for reading.
Ive taken my share of pot shots but I will say that I am fair. Nice win Cougars,
this is certainly a nice win for the state, for the conference and for the
NON-BCS schools. As much as I hate/dislike on the Cougars my feelings toward the
BCS are much stronger than they are toward the Y, which is actually saying a lot
because BYU makes my stomach churn. But let's be honest the BCS is a complete
scam and it is a plague on college football until WE get rid of it.Awesome win Cougars.
Hey BigUteFan whens the last time the U won a national title and dont give me we
should've won it last year weak schedule as always the U always plays easy teams
only when urban was there you actually played a tough team BYU was beating OU
before bradford went down didnt you open your eyes cause id say bradford 1 TD 96
yards passing hmm did we beat them with him in ya id say so
As much as it pains a Utah Fan to say it, I have too. Absolutely fantastic win
BYU. Thank you for finally representing the conference well!!! I was
pulling for you the entire game and now have no voice. We are still going to
handle you though in November and thus is life.Go Utes!!!
Both BYU and Utah have fine traditions. It's important to remember that the
world wasn't created in 1990. There were decades when the Y couldn't beat Utah
and the same when Utah couldn't beat BYU. Both schools have many impressive
victories against so-called "major" programs. Lavell Edwards remains one of the
great coaches of all time and Kyle Whittingham, former Cougar, looks to do the
same. Neither school is coming from nowhere. Boise State is making a new
tradition like BYU started in the 70s. Remembering great traditions and fighting
to live up to them is one of the elements that keeps the "great" programs on
top. Great heart has always finally triumphed over simple talent and arrogance.
This, of course, perfectly describes the BCS. They have failed to remember and
honor what true greatness consists of. Cold, dead money is their master. It will
bite them as a matter of natural course. Go BYU, Utah, TCU, Air Force, MCW and
the likes of Boise State. Might nor money has ever made right. OU also went down
fighting and with class no matter what excuse makers offer them for a false sop.
I hope that OU has a winning season for the rest of it's games. That would make
BYU's win that much sweeter, and would add legitimacy to the claim that the MWC
should be a BCS conference.
This was a fantastic win for the Cougs. BUT, this is the FIRST game of the year.
We still have a lot of football to be played. I hope the team plays with the
same intensity and heart, all through-out the year. They need to cut down on
penalties and turnovers if they want to run the table. Good luck in New
Orleans!!!! GO COUGARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
CSU just beat UC. The MTN just beat another big 12 team. Maybe it
will snow for the WY/TX game (LOL). It is to much to hope WY beats TX?
Response to EASY BYU that the win was only because Bradford got hurt. OU had
Bradford during the first half and could only put the Sooners in front by 3
points. BYU total yardage was like a hundred more yards but no score to show
because of turnovers. With or without Bradford if BYU quits turning over the
ball on offense and the defense continues to hold, BYU still could win. I think
OU fans need to accept that they got beaten and get ready for their next game.
That being said, myself being a Longhorn fan, I loved seeing OU get beat. I
bought the DVD of the OU vs BOISE State bowl game and watch it quite often. I
think that was the most fun game I've seen in my over 40 years of watching
Its not about not talking favorably about a non-BCS team, its about not talking
favorably about a team whose conference doesn't have a contract with ESPN.
Thanks again, Craig!
As much as the BCS is hated, it won't end. The NCAA, ESPN, and the BCS have done
enough to make sure that will never happen. Just look at the change in names
from Div-I to FBS. There is no intention whatsoever. No matter how big the win
or how many times the MWC or WAC bust the BCS, these conferences will still only
get the crumbs of the BCS and the bowl system in general. ESPN does nothing to
promote the MWC. I think it is in the contract of the announcers that they
cannot talk favorably about any conference that is not in the BCS. You cannot
even find a link to a non-BCS conference on the ESPN CFB homepage. I
would love to see a playoff, but there is too much money and politics in place
to let the small guy in, no matter the obvious inequities of the current system.
It's not about respect, it's all about money. It was still a great
win by BYU and great for the MWC.
Congrats BYU on a nice win - always nice to see a BCS team go down to an
underdog.Don't agree that you should be ranked ahead of BSU with the
way that Boise totally shut down Oregon, but a win against the BCS is the only
way the BCS can be broken. Congrats BYU & Down with the evil empire!
Best quote of the game came from the ESPN announcer, "The "Y" stands for, That's
"Y you play the game!""
How nice is it to read so many comments talking about how big this win is for
the MWC. Comments can get Jr. high-ish at times from both Utah and BYU fans.
Refreshing to see common sense coming out.I agree, and we all know
about the bias of ESPN and most national media. We can't do anything about that
exept to continue to win. Go BYU, Utah, TCU, and the MWC in general
Woooooooo Cougars!!! Way to show up defense. We've got some speed back there,
buy even more some Hitters!!!!! Max Hall big game...big time!!!That by far was
the fastest defesive line we'll see all year. Nothing like execution.
Idaho State took that idea from Utah State. Didn't much help the Aggies. Just
another demoralizing loss to the team.
Could it be possible that BYU beat Oklahoma because they overlooked BYU in
anticipation of their big game next week with the Idaho State Bengals. On a
serious note Idaho State is getting smarter. They lose every game they play so
why not get paid for their efforts. The made $450,000 at Arizona State this
week and will make $500,000 next week as they try to keep Oklahoma from scoring
in the triple digets. Good win for BYU they played like champions.
Based on the comment board, I think no one really cared about this game.
arturo the ute! thank you. i can feel how hard it is for you say those few words
but it is good to hear from you. i want you to know that i was cheering for the
utes against alabama last year and it didn't hurt a bit. thank you other ute
fans i hope we will do the same for you in helping to break the bcs.
Once again, Bradford was not a factor in this game.It was all tied
up at 7-7 just before he got injured...pretty impressive (sic) for the returning
Heisman Trophy winner.I like that Bob Stoops isn't making any
excuses for losing...he's a classy coach, and he took this loss with grace.Way to go Cougars!!!!By the way, I will happily wear Utah
gear when they play against Oregon and TCU gear when they play against Virginia
and Clemson. GO MWC!!!!!
That was an impressive victory by BYU. I am a huge BYU fan but until they play
Utah and TCU in Provo, I will be cheering for all three teams and any other MWC
team that plays a non conference game. This is the only way the MWC is going to
get respect. I really like the fact that BYU scheduled some really good
teams to open their season with. Instead of playing weak teams during the
pre-season, BYU,UTAH, and TCU need to schedule games against the top teams in
the country. This is the only way that they will gain credibility. Now,
we just need Air Force, New Mexico, or UNLV to step up and have great seasons as
well. Really it is too bad that BSU is not in the MWC. That would really
make the MWC look a lot stronger.Great game Max Hall, Koriya, and
the BYU Tight Ends
I was cheering for BYU in that game! This is the only way the MWC was going to
play for a championship this year with this win by BYU who ever goes undefeated
this year they can't deny the MWC to play for the championship. Proud of the
cougars great way to stick with what was working. Utah fans show that you have
class and give it up to BYU get on here and give them their props they did
Huge, HUGE for the MWC!!! You guys have picked up where the Utes left off in
January. A perfect tag team effort...as it should be! Seems that more can be
accomplished by working together than by trash talking one another. BCS is in
turmoil now let's bring the monopoly to it's knees!! Way to go
I like Bronco turning over the defense to coach Hill. He was awesome. Great
calls. Bronco does a wonderful job being there when He needs to inject his
judgement on a particular call. Great start to a wonderful season. Good luck
at Tulane.......and the rest of the games. We love you Cougs.
I'm not a BYU fan at all (I'm actually a U of Montana fan), but I have to give
BYU a 2 thumbs up on this victory. Most of the country doesn't think we know
how to play football out here in the Rocky Mountains, and you proved them wrong.
Be careful of your euphoria, however. One game doesn't make a whole season!
Congrats to the Cougars. It wasn't a pretty game, but it was sooooo much fun to
watch, and cheer like a crazy. Keep up the great work.
I agree (and I am) a WAC Boise State Fan!. This had to be the
biggest win in MWC games history!!!!!!!!It will propel the Cougars
high in the polls.GO BS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WAY TO GO BYU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BYU has to be randked ahead of boise state!!! they are 14th right now and byu
won at OU. bsu beat oregon at home we deserve to be ahead of them
sounds 'bout right. oh well. all we can do is just keep doin' what we're
I'm still in shock over this game. It is too bad that ESPN is not giving BYU no
credit for the win becuase all they talk about is the injury of Sam Bradford (I
wish full recovery becuase he is an amazing player) but we get the win and you
would of thought the defense would of kept them in the game. Defense was looking
way good, they are mean hard hitting defense and it was fun to watch them.
Offense needs a few kinks out but they still looked good Max Hall used vision
besedes on the interception. I have great hopes for BYU this year I just hope
this win just gives them modivation.
ok im a huge ute fan but am happy for the cougars for beating ou. a post earlier
said alabama was missing a key player but that player wasnt as good as gresham
or bradfor cough cough (1st team all american tight end and the freakin heisman
trophy winner) i am not taking away your win because you didnt have harvey but
you did show great heart and wanted it much more than ou! im going to have to
tell my high school teacher about this, he is a huge ou fan and told me no way
okie loses to byu but it happened.
An ESPN commentator just said that Oklahoma will "get a mulligan" by the voters
because Bradford wasn't in the game. Duh?Rankings prediction:Oklahoma 11thBYU 14thUtah 17th
when do ap polls come out?
Is the best team in the MWC after this game. No question about it. They are
now the team to beat. They are the only ones with a legitimate shot at the BCS
championship game. Oklahoma will be great the rest of the year and this will
only strengthen this year. To compare this win to Utah's win last year against
Michigan, shows ignorance and total lack of understaning college football.
Typical homer comment. Oklahoma was the favorite to return to the national
championship against Florida. Michigan was average before the Utah game last
year. No comparison. Let us enjoy the win. It has been 19 long years.
This win shows how deep the MWC is. I think it is a positive statement to the
BCS conferences and other BCS supporters that even the MWC's third best team can
People.....it's the first game of the year. We know nothing about how this OU
team will do this year. So this game might not be that huge after all.
Remember when Utah beat Michigan at the Big House last year, and then MU was a
bust. The Sooners looked awful yesterday. They maybe a 8-4 team (Or worse).
Lets see how the season plays out. True, it was a huge win for the Coug's, but
lets not get carried away. There is 12 more weeks of football. I am a Ute, and
cheered for BYU for the first time since I was a kid (parents brainwashed me to
like the Y). It was a great win, but lets keep it in check. TCU is the team to
beat in MWC. Utah, is not the best team this year. Letting the Aggies stay in
the game, was no impressive. All I'm saying is, we don't really know how good
OU is yet. The Utes beating BAMA was much bigger, because they were a PROVEN
team, that was one quarter away from the BCS championship. See you
in November at LES.Utah 34 BYU 31
Congratulations BYU! I was very impressed with the defense last night and the
offense had just enough in the tank to get the job done. I'll be pulling for
you in every game but one this year, and lets hope that the winner in November
emerges as an undefeated conference champ.
I am so proud of the MWC right now. I am true Blue, but last year I was totally
going for the Utes to down Alabama. Glad to see that most of us from the MWC at
least see the common vision. Bust up the BCS nonsense!
You hit the nail on the head; BYU fans are BYU fans first; SOME of them, maybe,
soccer fans 2nd or 3rd or 4th.If you want to sell out a soccer
match, don't even think of scheduling it at Rio Tinto on the same night as BYU
is playing one of it's biggest games ever.EVERYBODY that knows
anything about sports in Utah would have known that.
I hate BYU for beating OU. What are we elitists supposed to do now? OU really
let us down, like Alabama did last year. If they had stepped up and beat the
Cougars like they were supposed to - then end of story. Now we have to keep
hearing it. It is going to be a long year. We should never have let these two
teams play each other. It is just a mockery of our elite system to give
underdogs life. It is just not right.
This continues the war on the East Coast Elite idiots.WE WILL TAKE
DOWN THE BCS!Go TCU, Utes, and Cougars! Welcome to the MWC everyone
Last night's win was all about BYU's defense. They did a great job of getting
all over OU's offensive line and giving them trouble. I was less
impressed by the team’s offense (too many turnovers). The TE play was by
far the best aspect of the team’s offense. Max Hall's play was sporadic
until the teams 8 min 4th quarter drive. It is good to see non-BCS
schools continue to have success against BCS programs. I'm optimistic for the
same result against FSU. This year should be all about making a mockery of the
college bowl system.
I know they are incahoots with the BCS..cause all I see and hear today is Sam
Bradford...memo: MWC ..."STAND UP" and support our teams..
Way to go Cougars! All Utes are proud of you on this day! You played hard, fast
and smart! As a Ute fan, I couldn't be prouder of BYU....way to go! Thank you
for stepping up! Down with the BCS! Sad to say (for me), but this year may be
the year of the Cougar....who knows, maybe even a NC...just make sure you give
credit to the 2 Ute teams who also helped get you there!Go Utes! Go
Cougars! Go Utes in November!
Good job BYU. Welcome to the battle against the BCS. Thanks for joining us and
Be you a ute fan, an aggie fan, or a cougar fan, you have to hand it to the
cougars for sticking with it down the stretch. Way to put a nail in the coffin
of the "ol' boys club."
Remember, as bad as Wyoming has been, they went to Knoxville and beat Tennessee.
Great comments from the Ute fans. Very gracious. We BYU fans loved it when you
took down Alabama. GO COUGS AND UTES. We're comin' at you BCS!
Utah beats 'Bama and BYU beats OU. We are lucky to have two great teams in our
state. I hope both teams have great seasons, and the Y beats the U in LES!
Byu has more player's at age 25 than any team in the country. No knock on the
win, but there is a distinct advantage to an older more mature adult than other
teams with teenagers and 20 somethings on the roster. The Cougars are on the
radar now, and FSU is looming large....time and talent will tell how they will
fare the rest of the season. Big win, regardless against a big 12 team that is
at the top of the league historically. Wonder if Wyoming can show up and lock
horns with the Texas boys?
Kariya is the man!
Eric Moutsos Said: I predicted BYU to win.... I said in a post about a month ago
that OK should be very afraid and it was true. Napoleon Hill said : “A
quitter never wins and a winner never quits”. Go BYU
To positive ,fair and thoughtful Utah fans: You Rock and I am blown away with
your kind words and open admiration. go Utes! Sincerely;) To Hardened, Block
headed (never good enough) Dorks in Red. 1.Unga was hurt as well. 2. Bradford
did nothing in half one but get drilled. 3. Reynolds played hurt and well. Max
Hall threw for 329 yards with 2 TDs and 2 Picks vs OU. You played and barely
beat Logan Community College at RES! Give some freaking credit where credit is
due! BYU beat and beat up OU and it would not hurt you a bit to be classy
towards another blast to the system(BCS).
Isn't too darn bad against a fast, elite defense like OU. Max had a great game
and I'm happy he can finally shrug off the mistakes from last year. Now BYU, no let downs, play like this every week!See you at LES
for Florida State.
Man kudos to all the Ute fans on here I have lots of Ute friends but between
this game and the beatdown the Utes put on bama last year this is great I know
it's on when our teams play but this is cool to have everyone pulling together
for our teams and the conference!
Thanks Cougs for making me very happy last night, for a while I saw the Cougs of
old, you know-fumbles, penalties, mistakes, etc. But for some reason, OU looked
even worse. As the game went on, BYU's D just stepped it up like no other, I
give major props to those guys, they were studs! It took a while but the O
finally got in gear and started moving the ball, oh that last drive was a work
of art for Hall and his boys! I love it, I am still on cloud 9.Classy Ute fans- thanks for the props, I felt the same way when you beat Bama
last season, someday crazy fans (U and BYU) will realize that winning big games
like this is GOOD for the conference as a whole. Come November, it's game on at
LES, but until then good luck Utes.GO COUGARS! (Will Farrel in Old
Exactly. Any reasonable observer could see that Bradford wasn't moving the
Sooners any better than Jones the backup ended up doing. Bradford's
a great player and will come back to have a wonderful career, but the Cougar D
had neutralized the whole OU offense long before then. Bradford and Jones were
non-factors in this game. Only the idiot trolls who try to get under people's
skins want to put an asterisk on this win. (Note to the VERY FEW Ute
trolls--most U fans here have had real class--The Tide was missing a key player
in the Sugar Bowl, too!) Bring on the rest of the schedule! The
Cougs are ready! GO BYU!
I am so impressed with the responses from all of the Ute fans. What a great
example to all of us. I will be chearing on the Utes this year with the Cougars!
Great effort by the defense. The Cougars played like a team and it showed in the
final score. If they play to their level and not to their opponant's level thay
could likely go undefeatd this year.
until the teams at the bottom of the conference get much better.
to BYU on a great win. Also, I am very appreciative of the classy comments from
the Ute football fans. As an Idaho resident I too am sick of the BCS. I was
thrilled to see Utah beat Alabama last year. Maybe eventually respect will
follow plus at the very least an automatic bid. I would love to see a college
playoff system. GO Cougars and Utes. BTW - Being from Pocatello I
feel sorry for Oaklahoma's next opponent. Our very own Idaho State Bungals.
No way does this victory open any BCS doors.BCS teams have the TV's,
the population, the representation in U.S. House of Reps AND the Senate to kill
any anti-BCS legislation. Look at who was included and excluded
using the above criteria and you'll see they included all but the fly-over
country they knew they could ignore without consequences (monetary or legal). The BCS was assembled methodically and was designed to withstand the
occasional beatdown from those left out of the system. Congrats on
the win Cougs, but know that this win does no more to bust the BCS than the
boxing match in Boise on Thursday night.
I cheer for the Y and U and like to see them both do good and build a national
name for themselves. Great win last night. With or without Bradford, the fact is
BYU won and deserve credit for it. With that said, it is just funny how many
bandwagon fans are jumping on board today. That tells me that most BYU fans are
not even fans until they win. True fans cheer for their team in good times and
bad. Cheers to the MWC continuing to build their reputation.
Great Defense Cougs. I appreciate all the Ute fans for your gracious comments.
I applauded the Utes for taking down Alabama. We should always cheer on each
others teams until we meet each November. I WANT TO KNOW WHO THE
UTE FAN WAS THAT PROMISED PAYING BYU COUGAR CLUB $5,000 IF BYU WINS. I realize
the guy was joking but he posted several comments last week that he was dead
serious about his offer. Where is he now?
Good win for all!!!
I'm really sick of hearing that because Bradford was hurt that's the only reason
BYU won. So let's get this strait...Bradford basically plays two full quarters
and scores once...thanks to a BYU mistake. Other than that BYU was shutting OU
down left and right. Bradford went out because BYU had been been getting to him
and stuffing the run. Isn't that a huge sign that a team must be good... and if
you can't protect your QB you're gonna lose him!!!
Way to go BYU!!! This is a good thing for the MWC.
Unless the offense gets better it will be a long season for the cougs just like
BSU if they don't get there offense going then see ya to th BCS as for the Utes,
can not really judge it against a weak USU team.
Any irony in the fact that the guy who hit Bradford- Coleby Clawson (North
Sanpete HS)- and Sooner QB coach Josh Heupel each played at Snow College?
No way I'm going to read the 500 or so posts ahead of me, so I hope I'm not
repeating anyone. Congratulations on the nice win Cougars. It makes the
upcoming Ute victory in Provo that much sweeter!!
Well done Ute fans! I've learned a little about class from reading your
comments. Of course, there are a few idiots out there, but the vast majority of
the hundred or so comments that I read demonstrated an understanding that we are
better off fighting together than we are alone. Your past successes have opened
eyes around the country. Your Sugar Bowl victory last year opened doors to
recruits for every MWC school including the "Y". I'm going to go buy a "Ute"
tie to go along with my collection of cougar blue. Obviously, I'll cheer for
the Cougs in November, but until then, your class has won me over to a new
Clawson nailed Bradford the play or two before and caught him right in the
throwing shoulder and knocked him down hard. Then he nailed him from the other
direction and flattened him on the ground. THAT IS A HARD HITTING LINEBACKER.
And he has no mandatory rule to make him stop hitting hard.. His hits were
clean. However I don't think Bradford going out made a difference because the
BYU D was working them. This Ute Fan is impressed and congratulates
BYU. Here is hoping we are both undefeated come November game time.
Great article Jeff capturing the thrill of victory. When nobody else believed,
the players and coaches knew they could win. They played physical, liked they
said they would. Can't wait for the rest of the season. Go Cougars!
I'm glad to see some Ute fans are good sports. I cheered for the Utes when they
beat 'Bama last year. Your win and our win are good for each other and for the
conference! Let's bust the BCS again this year!!
I'll happily hold hands with any Ute who acts with class over BYU's win.Barry Switzer on the other hand?It will take a long, loooong
time before I forgive that dweeb.I, too, would have LOVED to have
seen the look on his face last night when the clock stuck zero.NICE
Hey "Cougar In Iraq" -Fly safe over there in the desert and THANKS
for keeping the bad guys far away from America's shores!!!Like you
say, bro, NICE JOB COUGARS!!!!!!!
"THEeyepatch | 3:47 a.m. Sept. 6, 2009 I few days ago some of you Y fans
were hoping that you wouldn't lose by too much. I don't know how many of you
left messages last night, but you have to believe that your team can win no
matter what. OU had everything to lose tonight. The spot light was on them and
all the "experts" set them up for failure. OU played horrible, lost their
Heisman winning QB, the o-line was wretched, brought in their "freshman" QB,
every gift the cougars gave OU, they gave them right back, and you STILL only
won by one point barely. They had a chance in the end to win with a field goal.
Don't pat yourselves on the back for too long. Have faith your defense can keep
you in games this year because your offense stinks."Ignore the
Eyepatch guy. He's just a lonely soul lost in his own personal wave of anger
because BYU knocked off a solid OU team on the road. That and the
fact he's late for his shift at McDonald's....
Fluke .. well kinda | 3:46 a.m. Sept. 6, 2009 I don't like all the hype in
a game where the best players aren't playing throughout the game. Unga should
have been healthy, and Sam Bradford was needed to play and run the offense for
Oklahoma.I am no Big fan of the MWC. I do enjoy college football. I
don't put stock in a wins unless everyone was healthy and playing in the game.
So go pat yourselves on your back for winning a game against a freshman. Props
on defense, there are better defenses in college. A legit win ..
Boise State over Oregon. Really though most of us out here in the west want to
see upsets .. so again congrats."Uh, no, BYU's win was no fluke. We
played OU toe to toe when Bradford WAS IN....he was hurt literally seconds
before the end of the first half, amigo, and it was TIED 7-7.Your
words reveal your attitude as nothing more than a pathetic BYU hater.GOOOOO COUGARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Every news site you go to mentions that byu you won because sam bradford got
injured. Discounting BYU's win like they did when they played Washington. In no
artical does it mention that Unga was injured who is a key player to BYU's
offense. Considering the two losses to injuries it made it more of a fair game.
If any one should be mad that sam bradford got injured, they should be mad at
OU's offensive line. Three players just standing around not blocking anyone.
Great win cougars! This was a huge blow to the evil BCS empire. and will help
which ever MWC school is left standing. If OK rebounds and wins out,
any undefeated MWC team should get a shot at the national championship because
of the ways the polls work AND the BCS powers will be desperately trying to
preserve their system. If they don't, it will be the final blow to the BCS.
BYU players...there is a fine line between confidence and arrogance.
Stay humble, focused and hungry. I loved the controlled emotion for a change
instead of the "business like attitude" as in years past.
I am not sure what is more shocking, BYU's win, or the graciousness of the Utah
BYU is going to win the National Championship! I mean they will probably lose to
No one is celebrating Bradfords injury. They are saying he'll be back
in a few weeks, and one of those is a bye.He took out a large
insurance when he decided to stay in college. It was a clean hit.BJ, Max Hall, both have suffered similar type injuries. But
thanks for posting anyway. I was wondering where all the negative human beings
Bradford's expression when OU missed the 54-yard FG was priceless!!! He stared
at the big screen in disbelief...I love it!!!Perhaps the sweetest
irony was that Barry Switzer was in attendance. For those of you who don't know
the back story, Switzer was the coach of OU back in 1984 when BYU won the
national title. It was Switzer who suggested that his OU team was the real
national champion because they had played a tougher schedule. All you
non-BCS conferences can give credit to Switzer's comments for starting the
precursor to the BCS. Sweet, sweet irony!!! I love that he sat in the stadium
last night and watched his Sooners lose...to BYU!!!
Huge congratulations to BYU on your outstanding W last night over the Sooners!
This is a major win for the Cougars and the MWC! Lil ole TCU is really going to
have to step it up to keep up with the Utes and Cougs; frankly, BYU and Utah are
so good, I don't think we'll have much of a chance at all. Please take it easy
Glad to see the bandwagon is getting going. This game was very similar to Utah v
Ala in that nobody gave the Cougs a chance. As a Ute I cant believe I am happy
for a BYU win. But I am way to represent for the MWC!
Please! For the love.....Isn't the football field 50 yards wide? Starting them
off on the 40 just about cost the Cougs the game.
Wow! 463 comments in only a few short hours since this story was posted. Seems
that a few people have a thing or two to say about this major sporting story.
What is all this if Bradford was still in the game business? His offensive line
did not protect him and BYU's defense did their job and put him out of the game.
It seems like that is the point of the defense. It is amazing how the Ute fans
say good job, but there is always the but... Give BYU the credit we are do, 25
years ago we put the WAC on the map and that is the reason we have great
programs at BYU and ugh Utah! Go BYU, beat Utah in November!
Yes! Death to the BCS! Great game. I was watching it here in
Washington State at the student center with a bunch of disappointed Wazzu Cougs
(who had just lost to Stanford), a handful of bemused foreign students, one dude
that insisted on watching soccer on his laptop, a couple of Oklahoma fans (who
left just in time to miss BYU's game-winning drive) and two Ute fans (with U.
logo tattoos, no less).Even the U. fans came around in the end; they
had been cheering for Oklahoma to begin with (disparaging BYU and shooting me
the occasional dirty look), but when BYU pulled out those great plays at the
end, they grudgingly admitted it was a great win. ("Well, we can't take down
the BCS all by ourselves," they said. "At least somebody else stepped up...even
if it is BYU.")For what it's worth, I officially predicted a win for
BYU. Though I thought the score would be higher, I did think it'd be close. One more step in what will be a long process, but a process that MUST
happen. The BCS must die. Good work BYU. Keep it up.
I'm amazed at the number of Ute fans posting on a BYU article (almost 4 Utes to
1 BYU). Most have been classy. Thanks for a great game BYU. The sky
is more blue and the grass is greener today! Very classy Bronco!
Are you serious? What planet are you on?
Utah whines about not being in the BCS, BYU speaks by how they play on the field
taking out the touted hyped champ. If you want BCS respect this is how you get
it! This was a hard hitting, hard played Game, Oklahoma still is probably
wondering what they ran into, Great Game BYU.
Anyone else want to get a petition going to have Lou Holtz acknowledge the
legitimate MWC Conference wins? The guy just can't say a good word about em.
Please let's all calm down and remember, as we were told throughout the past
week, that high school teams in Texas can hang with college teams from Utah. I
guess they can hang with Oklahoma too. Remember - they're so superior because
they REALLY, REALLY love football, whereas we only Really love football, and the
undisputed scientific proof is that they build large arenas for their high
school football teams. So, let's come down to earth and save our
jubilation until we can defeat the best high school teams from Texas.
still be ahead of BYU in the polls. I'll bet OU stays around number 10 and BYU
will be around 11 or 12 while Utah will be around 16 or 17. Did TCU play?
job well done cougs. you made the MWC proud. For all those who want the opposing
(byu/utah) team to lose, having each team win just makes the game that much
better in November. So here's to an undefeated season by both BYU and UTAH!
I was one of the non-believers along with thousands of others including Cougar
Fans. I was very excited to see the Cougars pull out the victory for selfish
reasons. I always want our conference to do well. It makes for a great game at
the end of the year. BYU's defense looked very good.Nice job!Go Utes.
Way to go Cougars. Proud of you. From Texas not far from Odessa,
Friday Night Lights
Just throwing this idea out there. the reason bradford got hurt is because of
OU's oline on the blitz that got to bradford clawson went untouched. this
happened at least three times during the game once before bradford got hurt but
on the same drive, when bradford got hurt. (these were both clawson who is a big
hitter). and again in the second half by pendleton (though jones landed on his
butt and not his side like bradford). The box coaches of OU should have done
something. But its a terrible thing that the OU line allowed their quarterback
to get hit three times with the same blitz.
its finally nice to see some other teams in the MW pulling their weight, not
just Utah! Im glad little Maxie remembered what team he was on.......well for
most of the game. It seems that he likes to throw to red jerseys!
Like some of the other cougar fans on here...wow, i've never seen such classy
ute comments in all my life - thank you. And to those who are ripping on Mitch
Payne or other players who made costly mistakes, give them a break - it was the
first game of the season, things like that can be ironed out.
To "Really Weird:" I believe Max was saying "oh my GOSH! That's what he was
saying. Thanks to everyone for supporting and congratulating the
Cougs. It was wonderful to see how great the Cougs really can be. As a season
ticket holder, I am looking forward to a great year.
Why slump into your chair at half time when the camera was put in your grill
Switzer? What were you hiding from? Did you sense what was about to happen like
we all did. What quote do you have for us now that the COUGARS are 2 and "Oh"
against your Sooners.
A win is a win. However, keep it in perspective. Had Bradford not been
injured, it would have been another opening season loss. The game was played
with a QB who had never taken a Division I snap. Now let's see what they do
against Tulane. I am anticipating a BIG letdown and a loss.
Please Please fans, lets not get carried away. Lets not hang the expectation of
the BCS on BYU so early! Lets look at this one game at a time like the players
must. This is the only way BYU can run the table. Great win BYU! Lets take it to
Where was this Ute class two days ago?
Good job Cougars, this gives more credibility to MWC and my Utes!! Ican't think
of anyone I would like to see you beat more than the Stoops-Switzer boys !
I'm a ute fan, and I gotta give props to the Y for this win. This win made our
program look good just like the Alabama win made the Y's look good. Make no mistake tho, this is still a zero sum game between the two schools.
There is nothing to get rid of an inferiority complex like some success. With
Utah's success last year, it seems many Utes have lost the chip on their
shoulders about BYU. Now Utah is personally invested in the success of the
conference in a way that they have not been for a while. What a relief. We need to save our angst for the rivalry game. Until then, thanks for
the gracious comments Utes.
I have changed from an avid cougar fan to one who occassionally watches with
interest. It was nice to see an entire team not getting too emotional but
continuing to work hard each play.
Great win, Cougars! You deserve all the respect of us Ute fans. Huge statement
to start the year!! You made us all proud. What an effort.
UTAH has massive talent! The State of Utah that is. BYU and Utah have a large %
of key players from The Beehive State. Utah is a rich state and has jobs, opps
and high school football talent. My wife is from Texas where high school
football rules supreme! The talent in Utah's Region 4 is perhaps enough to
proclaim it America's toughest Region. The MWC is white hot because of TCU, BYU
& Utah. BYU and Utah have won 3 of the last 4 MWC titles. They both draw from
and win with Utah high school talent. It's only getting better too. Expect the
BSC to crack and accept giving the MWC an automatic Bowl bid. What America needs
though is a college football playoff(justice/fairness). Meanwhile BYU and Utah
will continue to turn even hard good ole boy heads and beat BCS teams with Utah
high school talent.
BYU believed in itself and the real possibility of playing with the Sooners and
winning. The Cougars still needed things to go their way and they made the most
of opportunities that they were given. They are an exciting, fun team to
watch. Games like this make college football so much more exciting to watch
than pro football.
Congratulations BYU. That was a great game. Way to represent!
I want to congratulate BYU on the win. Huge win for the program and the
conference. I think an automatic bid is close for the MWC. If Utah can blow out
Oregon it will help them and BYU and at the same time hurt Boise State's
argument for a BCS bowl. I would take an 11-1 BYU or Utah over a 12-0 Boise
State team any day. Hopefully the last game of the season will be between 2 top
10 undefeated teams for all the marbles. Let's go MWC!
Here are some thoughts about a promising season. 1. BYU's defense
played as well as I have ever seen them play. However, OU did not spread the
offense. We thought BYU had a world beater defense last year when they played
well against UCLA. Then they could not handle the spread. 2. Max
Hall is like Brett Farve, he is capable of spectacular drives but he also forces
the ball in a lot. That automatically causes interceptions. BYU only wins if the
defense can handle the turnovers. 3. The defense was creative and
aggressive. They got pressure on the QBs. They did not play prevent. They appear
to have talent and depth in the DBs. Will they play a soft predictable prevent
against the spread.4. The offense looks about as good as last years.
It should get better with a little more experience. If BYU can handle
the spread and fix the mistakes they have a chance at a special season.
The "no huddle" 4th down play with 4 minutes remIning was the play of the game.
Wow, the Cougs got it done! I'll still be rooting for Utah come November, but
still, good job. Here's something to think about: BYU and OU both
run the table from here, other national powers suffer various losses, OU goes to
the BCS championship game and wins, and OU is named national champion over
undefeated BYU who handed OU their one loss! If the BCS could survive that, you
can't kill it, it's undead.
I have never cheered for Y, but I found myself cheering for the Boys in Blue
yesterday. This was not about BYU vs Utah. This was MWC football against the
BCS. Great win BYU. It's not as big as Utah dumping Alabama, but it was
probably the next best thing. I was happy for Bronco. One of the best post
game interviews I have ever seen. I looks like BYU is for real this year,
although I feel that TCU is probably the better of the 3. That team is so fast.
Now, for the Coogs, this means nothing if they cough up a game their suppose to
loose. I hope we both win out again, but I don't see Utah beating TCU away.
I'm not riding the Y band wagon yet, because I don't think OU was worthy of a #3
ranking. Their OU, and they get ranked high every year because of who they are.
But BYU should be a top 10 team for sure. But lets be real. It's the first
game of the season. Look at Utah, beating Michigan last year. Not as big as we
thought.Great job BYU
Been there....done that...but good job BYU
I am happy for the "Y", but to say one of the greatest victories ever? I live
in big 12 country and everyone knows they can't play defense. So when OU could
not move the ball against BYU it came as no surprise. What was a surprise was
the difficulty BYU had moving the ball against OU.
and did not come to Rio Tinto. You will reap what you sow: There will not be
another FIFA World Cup qualifier in the State of Utah. We were the only city not
to sellout its stadium and we were barely a home crowd. The El Salvadorans
almost outnumbered the US fans in a US home venue. So again BYU/soccer fans you
voted with your feet and you will deserve no more world class soccer. You had a
chance to be at an international match and chose to stay home and watch TV. PS
Ticket prices were the same in all other US cities.
This was a good win for the Cougar football program but it was not enough to
silence the MWC critics nationally. That was not the power-house OU teams from
the past. OU is a shadow of what it once was as it lost its entire O-line to the
NFL and because Bradford did not play the 2nd half. Enjoy the victory but don't
lose sight of the fact that you will not get any respect nationally as long as
you play in the lowly MWC
Went to BYU and Utah, cheer for both until they play each other - We usually go
to Disneyland during Thanksgiving.Like the big wins, but BYU tends
to let down on the game before/game after. So watch out for Tulane.Oklahoma has the powerhouse of Idaho State next week - that won't be
pretty.Utah had a great season last year, but TCU and BYU had good
seasons. I really think that Utah, TCU, BYU can play with anyone. They may not
always win, but they will play competively.I can't imagine spending
$1 billion for anything sports related - that is obscene, especially since the
scoreboard gets in the way.
Congrats to the Y. I used to be a Y fan many years ago but now bleed RED. But it
was a great win for the Y, the state and the MWC. November should bring a great
game - like they always are.
Way to endure to the end, Cougs; now return with honor.Seriously,
great victory BYU. You've made this Ute undergrad (and fan) proud to have gone
to grad school at the Y. Enjoy this victory, it was hard fought. Your defense
looked really, really good and I'm excited for Jordan Pendleton's career. Rise and shout and all that stuff. Great win.
C'mon...comparing this win to an UofU win over Michigan last year? Doesn't even
compare. Michigan has been a second rate Big 10 team for awhile...when was the
last time they won the conference? They were barely ranked in the top 25 when
Utah barely beat them last year. OU was #3 ranked in the nation and coming off
of a year that they went the National Championship game AND had a returning
Heisman Trophy winner...not even a close comparison!
Payne has been a weak spot since day one...Great team effort almost ruined
by his inconsistent kicking. Can't make a 46 yard field goal (this is only
from the 36 yard line) and can't keep the ball in bounds on a critical kickoff
(equal to a 20 yard penalty)...he is not in high school anymore.
OU exhibited the classic mistake of over looking an opponent. This is a good
lesson that the Cougars and all of the football world must take away from this
victory. Yes both teams showed all the first game jitters and mistakes that you
saw in every college game this past weekend. The national respect talk and the
MWC entering the BCS Blah Blah...is only falling on deaf ears. People money
generates respect not wins. When the MWC can draw the MONEY that the BCS
conference's do then and only then will the MWC and the likes of the WAC be part
of the BCS, and no SOONER.....
Congratulations BYU on a great win. A year or two ago I would have been pulling
for OU, but things have changed as we are working together for a bigger
objective. In a strange way, BYU's win over OU kind of validates Utah's win
over Bama, and Utah's win over Bama validates BYU's win over OU. This continues
to prove that BYU, UTAH and TCU can be as good as ANY team in the Nation. Heres
to BYU and UTAH being undefeated at the end of November.
Mitch Payne was solid last year? Um, he only hit 4/8 of his attempts beyond 40.
He's NEVER been solid, despite the love he's always gotten from the coaches.
Last year Sorenson was better and Stevenson's better this year. No one is
criticizing his personality, but his performance, like you're asking us to do.
Truth is, he nearly cost us the game, despite his"best" efforts. His best is
clearly not good enough and it's time for a personnel change.
Great game by BYU! Way to represent the MWC on the national stage. I love this
rivalry and am happy to see the Cougars do well...except against my Utes. We'll see you in November!
First time in my life I have ever cheered for byU. When Hall threw that
touchdown to Jacobson I actually stood up from my recliner and pumped a fist.Congrats to the coUgs, you played a great game!!
I loved it when the Utes sent a message to the BCS; I'm ecstatic that the
Cougars sent a similar message!
It was a game of blown opportunites, turnovers and penalties........... for BYU,
and we still WON!
A good start, but remember Bradford was injured early. Hate to see that happen
and really change the game. Would BYU win is Bradford stayed healthy??? Who
knows. But a #3 team should be able to recover and win. Don't expect this to
put BYU in the top 10, maybe 16 or 17.
I'm a cougar fan who was predicting that they'd get stuffed by Oklahoma.
Thanks cougs for proving me wrong. I was amazed to see 70,000 Oklahoma fans
(we had about 5000) and read that Oklahoma was calling it a road game. Our
coach was a class act and so was the Oklahoma coach.
Utahn and U alum congratulates BYU. Good job on that V!
Wow, I'll tell you what I'll have plenty of time to hate you later, but for now
excellent amazing spectacular game, maybe the nation will start to see that the
MWC is not a conference to overlook. May the BYU Cougars go undefeated into the
game on Nov. 28, and if my Utes do the same, the team that comes out alive could
be set to make hisyory again, and on that day I will stop cheering for you,
because after all, I am a Utah man. Once again great game.
Real Utah fans do NOT root for BYU to lose every game, just the last game of the
regular season. Most Utah fans are from Utah, and want all of the other schools
in the State of Utah to play well, and they also have enough vision to recognize
that ALL non-conference victories for the MWC is a great thing. Wish I could
say the same thing about the many associates and family I have that are BYU fans
- I have heard so many of them cheer vocally for Utah's opposing team. Rather
than cheer for their beloved Cougars to win, they derive greater joy in cheering
for the Utes to lose.I know not all BYU fans cheer for Utah to
always lose, but for those that do, (and unfortunately some Utah fans NEVER
cheer for BYU), but I WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND THAT MENTALITY! THAT WAS AN AWESOME
GAME BYU - IMPRESSIVE TO SEE YOUR DEFENSE TAKE CONTROL AND BE ABSOLUTE STUDS
AGAINST THE mighty sooners.
I think we have to hand it Jaime Hill, who coached an amazing football game for
the BYU defense. The BYU defense was the determining factor in this game. Bob
Stoops was shocked at how well the BYU D played, since they stuffed Bradford in
the 1st half, and held the Oklahoma O to just 3 points in the 2nd half. Awesome job Bronco as well! This one will be remembered for a long
End a guy's career and celebrate it.Nice
helps out the MWC w a big win instead of just the Utes and TCU.Its about
time and congrats!Go Utes!
A page back somebody demanded that the cougars be rated above the sooners at
something like #10 and the sooners at #12. Does that person ever
watch NCAA football? 2 reasons why BYU won't be higher than #15, and
Oklahoma wont be lower than #8.1) BYU beat them by only a point.
Sure, I'm a cougar fan and I'm SO thrilled that we played well enough to win.
But it would take a 30 point win to put us in the top ten from 20. It's just how
the polls work.2) Look at who the top ten played. With one maybe two
exceptions everyone played gimmie teams. In order to get into the top ten, you
have to win but teams must lose as well.My prediction: #16 BYU and
Very entertaining win. Amazing game. CONGRATS.I thought Bryan
Koriya was outstanding. He didn't stutter step or bog down he hit holes and
kept going after first contact.
All the talk about the OU quarterback getting hurt and missing half the game;
Unga was out for the whole thing!
OH MY HECK!!!! OH MY HECK!!!!! OH MY HECK!!!!
Sure would have liked to see Barry Switzers face at the end of this game.
A surprisingly delightful caboose of this win is all the nice Ute postings! Thanks to you Utes who have chosen to be such good sports and have taken
the time to share those feelings.BYU winning and Utes thinking its
cool--and having the class to say so---what could be better??
Felt really weird last night..I found myself rooting for the "enemy"(tds) but I
must give "props to where props is due" with that said..I hope you guys go
undefeated untill we come to your house in november...its major step foward for
the MWC ...here's a memo to the MWC...ACT LIKE YOU KNOW YOU CAN..case and
point...Max Hall on the sideline" puttin his hands on his head and saying "oh my
god"...MWC, STAND UP!!..THEY(ncaa) will think twice, before they schedule
another MWC school..See U in november!GO UTES!
I have to admit that I was hoping the Cougars could knock Bradford out of the
game......BUT.....when it actually happened, I was sad he was hurt and sad for
myself for even thinking that in the first place. I hope he is able to come
back soon for OU. But remember, Harvey was not able to play either. Now....the BYU defense played an outstanding game. Only 200 something yards
and 13 points for OU......wow, who would have predicted that? And they only had
10 points at the half......when Bradford *was* in there! And for
the Cougars to go into that environment and not wilt under the pressure......I
think Bronco had them prepared very, very well. This should be a springboard to
a very successful season........I hope they can simply steeamroll Tulane into
the Superdome turf. Rise and Shout!!
The "Blue Crush" defense had "Blue Grit"...
Exceptional win! Enjoy it for the day because next week BYU is a target. Then
Florida State will be gunning for you. BYU has my support. I just hope that
your heads don't get too big to fit in the helmet.
Props to the zoobs. You did the conference proud.
Great showing Cougars! And how about that defense? I hope we do this week in and
Read a lot of classy comments from Utes. Nice sportsmanship.
Congratulations to BYU and let us not forget BSU. Being in the Army all I hear
is SEC this and Big 12 that. I love it when any non-BCS team beats a BCS team,
especially when it comes out of the MWC or WAC. Keep it up and we might see 2
of the Top 10 teams in the country playing in November.
As a BYU alum in Iraq I have been excited for months about this game. I was
going to try to watch it on my laptop, but I had to go fly a mission (AH-64D
driver) here in Iraq instead. I was too nervous to ask anybody about the game
when I landed and my fears were realized when I was told by a fellow unit member
that BYU got blown out. How sweet it was when he said just kidding, you
guys beat them. I still couldn't trust him until I could look it up and see for
real. Most of my unit is from ACC country and I think they are getting
nervous about their automatic bid. GO MWC and most of all GO BYU!!!!!!!!!
I'm no football fan, but this was a great game and there was great celebration
all over Utah tonight. I'm hoping the season will be fun for everyone, and I'm
grateful to the Ute fans for their terrific sportsmanship! I hope the Cougar
fans will follow the Ute lead and the rivalry will go back to being "friendly"
and good natured like it feels today. Whether you bleed blue or red, what's good
for one is good for the other and we need each other. Tonight was a
class act all the way around - hope it lasts!
I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE A COPY OF STATS FOR THE GAME
I few days ago some of you Y fans were hoping that you wouldn't lose by too
much. I don't know how many of you left messages last night, but you have to
believe that your team can win no matter what. OU had everything to lose
tonight. The spot light was on them and all the "experts" set them up for
failure. OU played horrible, lost their Heisman winning QB, the o-line was
wretched, brought in their "freshman" QB, every gift the cougars gave OU, they
gave them right back, and you STILL only won by one point barely. They had a
chance in the end to win with a field goal. Don't pat yourselves on the back for
too long. Have faith your defense can keep you in games this year because your
I don't like all the hype in a game where the best players aren't playing
throughout the game. Unga should have been healthy, and Sam Bradford was needed
to play and run the offense for Oklahoma.I am no Big fan of the MWC.
I do enjoy college football. I don't put stock in a wins unless everyone was
healthy and playing in the game. So go pat yourselves on your back for winning a
game against a freshman. Props on defense, there are better defenses in college.
A legit win .. Boise State over Oregon. Really though most of us out
here in the west want to see upsets .. so again congrats.
Unless BYU wants to:1. Establish credibility for BYU and the MWC2. Elevate the BYU program to the elite level3. Bust the
BCS4. Put the Cougars in position to challenge for the National
Championship5. Put more pressure on major college football to
abolish the BCS and establish an NCAA-sponsored playoff to determine the
this was not an offensive game at all. this was a great defensive game from both
sides. i havent seen any people hate on BYU yet on these comments so i am happy.
i know that some people are saying that BYU only won because bradford was out
but like i read on some earlier comments, if OU is the third best team in the
nation then their defense should have been able to hold BYU to 0 points. BYU
stepped up and didnt let up. way to show that BYU can play. and big props to
karyia. way to step up at the last second. lets go cougs! keep it up and we will
have a very good chance to atleast make it to a BCS game. maybe a national
championship. i am not saying that they are going to go to the national
championship but if they can breeze by Florida state, TCU and utah then they
most likely will because of the high ranking. we will definitly pass boise state
too. we have toGO MWCDOWN WITH THE BCSGO COUGS
54 yard field goal for a kid that couldn't hit at 47 yards?Head
coaches make millions of dollars... Why?The old 'center fake the
snap,' 'put the ball under your jersey and walk 13 yards' would have
been a smarter play. And don't get me started about that interference
call by BYU in the end zone. The 74,000th. fan up on row 989 and the
injured OU quarterback grinned when they watched that replay.
... are kinda spoiling the moment here. Relax. Stop looking for the black cloud
behind the silver lining. Don't tell me--you folks boo your kids' Pop Warner
teammates when they make mistakes, too? Many Cougar athletes--not
only Mitch Payne!--messed up at some point tonight. They pulled together anyway
despite the sloppiness and found a way to beat one of the best teams in the
nation. My advice: Enjoy it!
Agreed. Oklahoma needs to have a good 9 or 10-win season for this win to be
fully respectable at the end of the year. I wish the best for Sam
Bradford--hated to see the guy go down and hope he's back soon. I don't usually
cheer for the Sooners, but hey, there's motivation! So Go OU!
Who'd have thought? Jaime Hill should get a game ball, as should the whole
defense.Oklahoma's receivers were blanketed.The
linebackers played like demons. The line stuffed BOTH 1,000 yard
rushers from last year.
Congratulations Cougars, this was a great win for the BYU program, a great win
for the MWC and another big kick in the butt to the BCS. This Ute fan salutes
you for a tremendous victory.
Man, I CAN'T WAIT until I go to work on Tuesday and tease my friends who are OU
fans!Nice job on the (generally) classy comments, Utes!I
admit, my first comment, posted here before I read any on the board, was one
that was a jab at what I thought would be Ute fans minimizing BYU's win and yet
those kind of sophomoric posts were very few and far in between. What
say we band together in every game our beloved Cougars and Utes play until that
last week in Novmeber?Deal?Dan MaloyEnid, OK
Great win for the school, for the state and for the conference. I've been
impressed with all the classy Ute fans coming here to post. One thing though:
we're not trying to prove the MWC should be in the BCS. NO ONE should be in the
I WANT ALL THE UTE FANS ON HERE TO KNOW SOMETHING. YOU JUST WENT UP SEVERAL
NOTCHES IN MY BOOK. VERY CLASSY RESPONSES ON HERE. I HAVE JUST BEEN SWAYED. I
USED TO ROOT FOR BYU AND EVERYBODY WHO PLAYED UTAH BUT NOW... I'M ROOTIN FOR THE
UTES EVERY GAME BUT THE ONE IN NOVEMBER. I THINK I MIGHT EVEN FIND A WAY TO GET
SOME FRIENDS TOGETHER TO GO TO YOUR GAMES WEARING BLUE SHIRTS THAT SAY "COUGS 4
UTES TILL NOVEMBER".
that in reading these comments i didnt have to endure a any talk about max's
heisman or the inevitable NC byu is going to win this year. way to keep your
heads on straight cougers. that game was some comedy of errors in the first
half. i about threw a fit with all the shananigins but OU returned the favors.
Great win. IMPRESSINVE D. lets see how things shake down in november. GO YEWTS!!!!!!!
Thanks for the nice comments and support. Glad to see that the MWC is getting
the respect it deserves. Its also great for the state of utah. Keep up the good
work utes and cougs
I'm not a Cougar fan but they played a great game against OU. Congratulations on
a great win. The Cougars have earned respect.
I HAVE TO SAY, I HAVE NEVER BEEN SO IMPRESSED WITH UTE FANS IN ALL MY LIFE. I
ALMOST WANT US ALL TO GO GET SOMETHING TO EAT TOGETHER. WE'LL WATCH YOUR AWESOME
SUGAR BOWL WIN AND THEN WE'LL WATCH THIS AGAIN. WE CAN EVEN INVITE SOME BOISE
FANS AND WATCH THAT AMAZING FIESTA BOWL TOGETHER IF YOU LIKE. HA. I LOVE THIS.
BUT COME NOVEMBER.... ;)
A great win for the BYU Cougars indeed! Perhaps the MWC will get some respect
from the BCS!
I've been a Cougar fan since the Virgil Carter days and belonged to the Knothole
Gang - and have seen almost all of BYU's biggest games over the years. This year's defense is the best I've ever seen at BYU, and the offense has the
potential to be at least as good as the 1984 team. But let's face it
- the national media will only give us respect if we win every game and Oklahoma
wins all of their remaining games and we're the only undefeated team in the
country.I've lived in Southern California, Florida, Maryland, and
Texas. Most people think of BYU the way we think Utahans think of Oral Roberts
University - they just think it's a fluke if we win. Yes, it's changing for the
better as witnessed by the Top 10 ranking we got last year even though Utah and
Boise State were also undefeated at the time, but the reason the BCS can get
away with their monopoly is that there are so many more BCS team fans out there;
they think BYU still has a lot to prove. I guess we do, too.
I hope no one is bagging on Mitch Payne too bad. Some of the comments here seem
to be calling for his head.Yes, he missed a field goal and yes he
shanked an enormously critical kickoff out of bounds which almost cost us the
game. But the guy is human, and people are more important than games.
I try to remember that who we are is completley separate from what
we do. Critique performance and not people. BYU coaches will work to figure it
out. He was pretty danged solid last year.Personally, I'd be
shocked if he booted any more kickoffs out of bounds this year.Hang
in there, Mitch!GOOOO COUGARS!!!!!!!!!!!
It is fans like you that make it hard to cheer any BYU victory. How can you
cheer for Bradford getting hurt? Why would you want posters of that? Go ahead
and cheer for your team, but lets not get all excited that someone may have a
potentially career ending injury.
Hey congrats Cougs, wow what a game...I found myself cheering and it was weird.
See you in November!
Please help Payne!!! A freshman walks in and puts it on the one yard line and a
guy in the program for 3+ years kicks it out of bounds on the kickoff. I'm
beginning to think his mental focus is not what it needs to be. Great job
Cougs! Best defense I have ever seen from the Bronco Busters
Good job BYU. Great for the school, state and conference.
Well done Cougars. Usually there is one commentator or journalist our there that
will go with the upset in a Top 20 showdown like this, but not for this game.
Everyone was 100% aligned on how this game would play out. And with good
reason:1) BYU's painfully shallow offensive line3) OU's
Heisman Trophy QB4) OU's All-American Tight End5) OU's NFL
sized/speed Defensive Line6) No UngaWow...way to overcome the
I found myself bragging about the utes this last year to my buddies across the
country, utes it's ok to do the same. both big wins were great for us all. go
mtn west, go cougs, go tcu, go utes!!!!!!!!
You know, I really thought 99% of the Ute fans would be somehow trashing BYU
tonight after our win.Boy, was I wrong.
Even though ESPN didn't give BYU much credit, at least by being shown on ESPN,
the rest of the country was able to see the game. Much better than if it had
been shown on the mtn where a lot of credit would have been given (I assume)....
Kewgs still wont make it to a BCS game, they will slip up somewhere and no one
is going to beat Boise. Sorry but we all know its true.
I HAVE TO SAY THIS WAS A FANTASTIC GAME AND PLEASURE TO WATCH. NOT
ONE DIRTY PLAY, FISTICUFFS. GOOD SPORTMANSHIP TO BOTH BYU AND THE
SOONERS. Again thanks for your wonderful sportsmanship.
Man, this was such great win for our Cougars that I don't even want to go to bed
tonight. I think I'll just stay up all night and then sleep during Church. But
if someone talks about the game during testimony sharing time then of course
I'll wake up for that.
Congratulations Cougars. I only got to see tiny snippets of the game (right now
the Pennant Race for my Rockies > College football), but I did see the very end.
All I heard on the radio this week was how the difference in talent between BYU
and OU is the second and third string, and that's why BYU had basically no
chance. Well, a couple of starters go down (I'm not talking about BYU's
starters out), and all of a sudden it's as if the Y was successful against a bye
on their schedule (if you listen to the ESPN analysts). What happened to all of
those great athletes OU had backing up the starters? Oh, and btw,
Sam Bradford wouldn't have been on the field during BYU's 8-minute game winning
drive. Are the pundits going to make excuses for OU's defense, too?To be clear, this isn't a rip on Oklahoma. I've actually been a bit of a
Sooners fan the last few years. Barry Switzer was one of the biggest horse's
patoots to ever pace a sideline, but Bob Stoops is The Man and has completely
changed the way I view that program. I hope they can regroup from this and have
some great success this year. Go Sooners! Good luck against UM and especially
I was getting ready to blast the obnoxious Ute fans that have been saying all
year that OU was going to pound BYU 56-10 but I am glad to see so many classy
Ute fans posting tonight. I will be smiling when I go back to work on
Tueday morning because I posted a score 21-20 for BYU on a prediction board. Great job by the coaches in getting the team ready to play, especially with
all the injuries. Kariya did a good job as well as the entire D, especially on
the goal line. Max Hall had a couple of INTs but made the plays when it mattered
most. I hope the rest of the MWC teams continue to do well to either get
the MWC in a permanent game position or move to a playoff system. Utah has shown
that just going undefeated is not enough for the BCS folks. This game was
very impressive but there are a lot of games to be played. FSU, TCU and Utah
will all be tough games for the Cougars. Even teams like Tulane and Air Force
can't be overlooked.
Joe Mahma | 10:33 p.m. Sept. 5, 2009Yes, it's nice that Ute fans have the
opportunity to get a little taste of the success that BYU fans have been
enjoying for most of the past few decades. Keep it up for another ten years or
so, and you will probably have a solid program!-------------The last few decades??? BYU is now 2-20 against ranked teams assuming OU
finishes in the top 25 at the end of the year.If you want to talk
trash back it with facts. Otherwise you just look silly. Its ironic that
during the game the dominance of BYU football was highlights of the 1984
miracle. BYU has never been ranked in the top 5 under the BCS system. I will
let you guess what Utah had done during the same period.Congrats to
BYU for a great win!! I didn't think you had it in you. For now I have to give
respect where respect is due and that is to BYUs defense.
Well I'm not a BYU fan at all but I was pulling for them anyway FOR THE SAKE OF
Didn't see the game, but was surprised (happily so) to see that BYU had beaten
OU. I honestly didn't think it would happen, but it is a great win for the
conference and one that BYU fans can be proud of.As for ESPN's
biased reporting; what can you expect? The network is married to the BCS and
probably holds a special hatred for the MWC since it has its own TV deal (albeit
one that sucks).Way to go BYU! Way to represent.
I'm a RABID Cougar fan and I am quite impressed with so many Ute fans giving us
congratulations, AND, I will add, doing it with real class.I'll make
a vow that I'll pull for Utah in every game you guys play until you play my
beloved Cougars.Thanks, Utes!
I just have to remind the nay-sayers that at the end of the first half, the
stats read Bradford 96 yards, Hall 220+ yards. Also, Nevada Ute - the win over
Michigan may not have been a lot on your strength of schedule, but it did bump
you up in the ratings which helped with the bowl selection. Too early to tell if
we can deal with Florida State, TCU and Utah, let alone Tulsa (who had a great
game today) and the rest, but if we can, this will help us the same way.
Way to go BYU, great victory!!!...get rid of that kicker and there will
not be a weak spot on the team. Friends told us the amazing walk-on was snubbed
by Tidwell, what a mistake! Payne is awful.
BYU Dominated this game far more than the score showed! Far more offensive
yards, just stop the lame turnovers! Oklahoma ONLY scores came from turnovers
deep in their own territory! BYU Defense shut down the #1 offense in the Nation
Completely and like Nobody thought possible! With Utah, TCU and
Florida State AT HOME, this could be 1 Awesome Season! Even with a respectable
loss to 1 of those 3, they could be BCS Busters with a Strength of Schedule well
Above Boise State!
I am a true Ute fan: my favorite team isn't Utah; it's whoever is playing
BYU---except for tonight. Tonight I'm a Cougar fan. I was there. I saw them
shut down the team who last year had the most prolific offense in NCAA history.
This win was for all of us. Thanks Cougars. We'll see you in
It is soo nice to see Utah and BYU actually getting along! Will it last???Probably not! But I'm still going to enjoy the moment!Go Utes!GO BYU!!!!!!!
I am no Cougar fan, but I hate the YEWTS and OU more. GREAT WIN on
National TV.Boise State will win some BIG ones this season too and
the West will be riding highWAY TO GO BYU. You're the
BEST!!!!!!!!!GO BOISE STATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thankyou Ute fans for chiming in and supporting the big win. You have to
appreciate coach Bronco's statement after the game how this was a giant win for
the "conference"...not only BYU. Even though we are huge in-state rivals and
there's some harsh feelings between the teams, a true college football fan will
support a one step closer win to national recognition for our conference. We all
win after this game just like when the utes spanked Bama. love it. And cougar fans, stop with any BCS talk yet. We still have Florida St. and a
tough conference schedule. With all that said 11-0 cougars vs. 11-0
utes in november?? Yes I will have some of that and be there to watch the utes
get an invitation to the las vegas bowl.
... thinks that deep down U fans and BYU fans actually love each other!!Utah.... I love you!
Thanks to all the classy Ute fans for their nice comments!Congratulations Cougars! Awesome game tonight! Great Defense! I'm a HUGE
Cougar fan and wish I could have been in Texas for the game. Tonight it is
definitely "RISE AND SHOUT"!!!!!Go Utes and beat the Ducks! Hope
both teams have a great seasons. The MWC deserves the recognition it is
getting. Thanks for doing such a great job on Alabama in the Sugar Bowl. I already have my tickets for the UofU vs. BYU game!
Great win for the Cougs! However, we won't truly know how significant this win
is until the END of the season. Nearly all of us Utes thought that an opening
game win at Michigan last year was a big deal....turns out it wasn't....
Duh, injuries are part of football. If OU was so great they still should have
steamrolled BYU. What would it have been like with Unga. Why can't you swallow
your hate and just say Congratulations. This is great for BYU and great for the
kudos to the Ut ahutes fan for owning up and showing class with their comments.
Hope they can do well this year too.
Did the Sam Bradford injury effect the outcome of this game? Maybe? Maybe not?
No one will ever know. People are going to be talking about the injury and
pinning the lose on it for some time to come. One thing is for sure injuries are
a part of the game, truly great teams find ways to win when people go down with
injuries. Great job Cougs! Way to represent the MWC!Go Utes!!!
I was at the game and can tell you that even with Bradford, the Coug's were in
the game from the beginning. Now I do think that there may have been
some different play calling in the 2nd half by Stoops if Bradford was still
playing, but as the saying goes "if If and But's were candy and nuts we all
would have a Merry Christmas".You have to play the game, regardless
of who is there or not, and the BYU Defense OUTPLAYED the OU offense ALL NIGHT
LONG!!!!Look at the stats, even with Bradford the longest completion
for OU was only 18 yards. So no more comments about how the only reason the
Coug's won the game was because Bradford was hurt. The trend was set in the 1st
half and it contiued in the 2nd. Remember the only reason OU had a touchdown at
all was because of a BYU muffed punt.
the conference will not get any respect until the bottom feeders get their act
together. Yes, Utah, BYU and even TCU have won key games against teams from BCS
conferences, but the MWC will continue to be looked down upon until UNLV, SDSU,
Wyoming, CSU and New Mexico improve their programs.
Congrats Cougs. You were awesome. And thanks to the many favorable comments by
Ute Fans. I was cheering for you against Alabama,
From one who was there tonight I can tell you it was truly magical! I was also
there when BYU upset #1 Miami with Ty Detmer and it is right up there! My brothers are all Boise State fans and if anything this reinforces the
message that the BSU win was not a fluke. Call it another message from the
west. Boise State vs. OK, Utah vs. 'Bama, BYU vs. OK - the BCS better start
paying attention! After the game we listened as the OU fans
complained to Stoops on the post-game radio show about scheduling too hard of a
team in BYU and in scheduling a neutral site - give me a break!! They
out-numbered us 25-to-1!!!Tonight I was proud to be a Cougar, and
yes I was proud to be from the MWC!!!
Are "TDS" and "Yewts" supposed to be insults?
Stop comparing this to the Utah win over Alabama because it's not even close.
The TCU win over OU is a bigger win for the MWC than this was. You squeaked by
against a bad OU team and needed to rely on their red shirt freshman quarterback
to win this one. Please stop with the BCS front runner talk until you actually
do something with your season. Remember where that got you last season? A win
over a team that will be unranked at the end of the year is nothing to get
worked up about. Boise State should be the favorite still, they did what they
were supposed to do: DOMINATE. You got lucky.
Okay, I stand corrected and hereby retract my previous statement. Here's to a
successful year for the MWC and an improved TV situation for the regular season.
Way. To. Go.I am a Utah man all the way, but I've been wearing a BYU
shirt here in Missouri, today, hoping that BYU would slap OU big time. How sweet it is.The MWC gets no respect out here, and the only way
to get it is to earn it.Way. To. Go.
Ref: Easy BYU...Dude....it was 7-7 when Bradford went down in the 1st
half...BYU was the one moving the ball most of the first half and it was also
BYU who was Beating themselves coughing up the ball. If they hadn't turned over
the ball and gave the Okies so many penalty yards it might easily have been BYU
21-0...But that's BYU football...BYU won despite of itself...Bradford wasn't
that big of a factor and Jones was moving the ball almost as well as
Bradford...which compared to their 2008 season was barely moving. BYU 's
Defense was very effective...Your assessment is mute. Oklahoma wasn't as tough
as they were made out to be...and BYU is probably a little better than it's
preseason #20 ranking indicates....Are they top 10???... that's to be
seen....but they are definitely top 15.
I was surprised and disappointed that ESPN hardly ever showed the statistics
during the game. BYU moved the ball well against the vaunted defense that many
said was the best in the nation...returning 11 starters? Also, the loss of
Bradford and their Tight End was impactful but so was all the injuries at BYU.
There should be no marginalizing this win against a deep and powerful OU team.
Forgot to mention...how about BYU's LT playing with a broken hand?Or
how about BYU having to use their 3rd string LG to replace the 1st and 2nd
string guys who went down with injuries before the game?Where's the
asterisks for BYU's problems they had to overcome?
then please don't read the comments and just go away. problem solved. notice how
you're not worth capitalized letters in a reply?
Crimson Club, thanks for the recommitting your 5k to Cougar Club--good of you to
man up. Could I just request one thing: could you make the donation in my name
so I can get better seats for BYU games?
Gotta love ESPN. OK was well on their way to last seasons average of
51 points a game when Bradford was injured. They had 10 points in the
1st half, and were going to score 41 in the second?
Thanks Cougars for a great game. You did the MWC proud. Keep it up and we'll see
when the espn recap started playing I was excited that it was about 7 minutesd
long... showed about 30 seconds of plays and spent the rest of the time talking
about Bradford and future for Oklahoma. Not a word about what this means for
BYU. Stupid ESPN commentators... Nice game BYU - congrats!
To Ute Fans:You need to celebrate this one with us just like we
needed to celebrate the Bama win with you. During rivalry week it's
one, but other than that week need to pull for each other. Only by both of us
keeping on our current hot streaks will the MWC get an automatic bid or will the
BCS system go up in smoke. Both teams need to be powerhouses for this to happen.
Let's both celebrate this one and good luck with the rest of your
season. If we're both undefeated when we meet at the end, things will start to
Give me a break. the Utes are showing class by giving us their congrats. They
see past the rivalry until Thanksgiving weekend as they should. Tonight was a
great victory not just for BYU and the state of Utah, but for the MWC in
general. OF COURSE ute fans aren't crazy about our team, they are utes. They are
merely showing class and respect for our awesome upset. To the well
organized BYU/UTAH FAN's mind, We are BYU and Utah fans at the same time except
for one day during thanksgiving break. GO UTES, GO COUGS. Heck, go Beehive
Leave it to a BYU fan to ruin the lovefest going on tonight... I've read every
comment and there's only been a small fraction of Ute fans starting out by
saying "I hate you guys." In fact, there have been just as many cheap shot
comments from Coug fans as there have been from the Utes. For the most part,
both sides have been extremely gracious though so let's keep it up... At least
til November. Congrats Cougs from a true Ute fan! Nice job representing the
The State of Utah -- thanks to the Utes and Cougars -- is single handedly going
to bring down the travesty called the BCS.I'm a Ute fan who's proud
of BYU tonight. Great win!
Congrats, awesome game! Way to keep the MWC on a high!
RE: congrats | 10:54 p.m. Sept. 5, 2009 "Congrats on beating a team that
was missing its two first team All Americans on offense!"So what did
YOU do today that was special???
Fantastic win by the Cougs. I was there. They dominated in almost every
categories except rushing yards. A great beat down on OU. Way to represent the
ESPN is almost worthless. BYU pulls off the well deserved win and all they can
talk about Bradford's injury. What about BYU's stellar defense? What about Max
Halls almost entire 4th quarter drive for the winning TD? And whoever posted
about Lou Holtz non stop love for Notre Dame was right. Lou you were a great
coach but your lisp and annoying voice should not be on a main stream sports
show. Sorry but I do respect how good of a coach you were.
Dale, you are showing your true colors, trying to read more into the comments
and make something out of nothing. This is rivals we are talking about, and we
are all sharing in the greater glory of this win for the conference and the
cougars. Surely you have some understanding of glory and sharing?Good job Cougs, Go Utes!!
Dude, I don't care what you say, they were both huge.My compliments
to Utah fans. This board looks like the one from the Sugar Bowl win last season.
See, we can all get along. Pick your team during the rivalry week,
but until then, let's just be a huge fan of BYU and the U of U!!!
Congrats Cougs! I'm a Ute fan but I was excited to see that win today. The only
negative is that the only thing ESPN is talking about is Bradford's injury, and
not the game itself.
Congrats Cougars!!! Giant Win, I am out on the East Coast and this game was
making news, which is rare for any MWC game outside a BCS bowl. Just don't
lose any easy games. It would be great to see the conference teams move up the
rankings until the November UTE V BYU game.
Love to see him cough up the compliments (insincere, but the words did come out
of his BCS loving mouth)...Mark May is a stud.
I am a Cougar fan. Please, please SHUT UP!!!!!!!!! You are the type of fan that
fosters so much hatred in this rivalry. Pleas have some class!!!!
First, I am not a Mormon but an...eh hem EX Mormon. I love this. I still love
BYU football! This makes me so happy!!! Why?? I am supposed to go against god's
team, the 'Y' but MAN, I love the Coug football!
Lot's of questions were answered tonight! They can play and win with the big
boys on the big stage. Offensive line did really good, the defense was
exceptional, the team was well prepared for this one. I loved the stat near the
end of the first half where Hall had much higher numbers than Bradford before he
got injured.Down with BCS. The big east doesn't have anybody in the
top 20, and the MWC has three tough teams in the top 20 already. True blue is
rising as the coach is stating!Awesome!!!!
Correction, Jim. BYU beat TCU when they were ranked in Texas in 06. ASU was
BYU's last road win against a ranked BCS school
What is with all the ute fans starting their congratulatory messages with "I
hate you guys, but..." Sounds sort of like my 5 year old's apologies to his
little sister. You're really showing your true colors.
Utah destroying Alabama. BYU stunning OU. Gosh,
football is fun to watch when our teams are tearing it up, is't it?! I get
chills just thinking about how awesome it is! GO COUGARS AND
UTES!!! (and MWC, i hate the BCS)
Good to read the classy comments from Ute and other MWC fans. What
I'm hating is the ESPN excuse-machine, pinning the loss on the Bradford injury
at the end of the first half. While Bradford was in the game, Hall outplayed
him in yardage and 3rd down conversions, as well as overcoming turnovers and
penalties. The win is all the more amazing when considering the
absence of Unga and Bauman...wish ESPN would acknowledge their absences when
talking about the loss of Bradford...Go Cougs!
Pitta and Jacobsen are still open!!
What is with all the losers sitting at home on their couches predicting
victories in November. When players predict victories it's dumb, when fans who
have nothing to do with the game predict victories, it's really dumb. I can't
believe I'm wasting my time reading this garbage.
"The delay of game penalty Oklahoma took on 4th and goal may have been the
difference. Instead of a chance to punch it in for a touchdown and 10 point
lead, they had to take the safe route and kick the field goal, keeping BYU
within 6. That is really the only thing you can definitely was definitely caused
by Bradford being out."Actually, what about their "powerful" RB's
who SHOULD have been able to run it in from 6 lousy yards out? Even a grandma
would have been able to hand it off to one of those guys for a score from that
range! And what about all of OU's GREAT INVINCIBLE DEPTH?? NO EXCUSES! BYU had
key players out injured or trying to play injured in this game but they simply
manned up and won it!!!!GO COUGARS!!!!!
Congrats to BYU. Im not a BYU or Utah, non a OU fan but thought BYU had no
chance because of the soft defence they have had in the past. I was right
thinking OU would BYU to 17 points are less. It will be interesting to see how
BYU defense does the rest of the year. I think OU shot themselves in the foot
with all the false starts and holds which made it hard for OU to get going on
offense. I didn't look like the same OU team as last year but non the less a
talented team. Murray is a beast why he only got 10 carries is beyond me.
Brown looks ok at best.I know BYU doesnt win if bradford doesnt get hurt but
either way they proved themselves tonight. Maybe they can keep it up for the
year. Congrats BYU
AWESOME!!!! GO COUGARS!!!!
Congrats on beating a team that was missing its two first team All Americans on
If the naysayers were correct, Oklahoma was not supposed to need Bradford in the
2nd half anyway.
BYU pulled a Utah!! Nice work. It looked as though they studied the Ute Sugar
Bowl tape, the way they were pressuring the QB. Excellent win for the MWC!A great part of this win was Barry Switzer was there watching the game.
I'm sure he's running all types of excuses. First Barry was doing the studio
show for the Sugar Bowl, now this?
I am extremely impressed and happy with all the Ute fan postings, I honestly
thought I would never see the day. It makes me very happy that I did cheer
loudly for the red team as they blasted Bama. Thanks Ute fans for the support
today and you just made me see Ute fans in a whole new light, you have just made
another Ute fan...that is until late November. I bleed blue but now with a
little tint of Ute red. Heres to cheering the U to another great season and to
hopefully seeing BYU bust the BCS this year. P.S. I predicted a BYU win all
week although my prediction was off 28-24 I'm still happy with the outcome
I agree that the Ute/Bama game was the biggest for the MWC. Ratings at the end
of the season are much more accurate than at the beginning. Of course if OU wins
out, they could still end the season #3. It's nice for ESPN to give props to BYU
though since they usually don't.P.S. I'm a Y fan/grad.
I have a son who goes to Utah and a daughter who goes to BYU. I cheered the Utes
when they beat Alabama and I cheered the Cougars beating Oklahoma. Those games,
however are bigger than than the Utes and the Cougars. This has turned the whole
BCS upside down. The MWC is the big beneficiary for these wins. We ought to
solicit Boise State to join the conference and then we should be a BCS
conference. If the big boys who run the BCS can't see that, then let them
continue to bask in their stupidity. Can you honestly believe that second rate
conferences such as the ACC and the Big East are better the the MWC anymore?
This should make everyone in the nation who knows anything about college
football finally realize who the power conferences are and that the MWC belongs
to that group.
Today I'm a BYUTE. A big Congrats. You done the conference proud. But don't
worry, I'll hate you all again tomorrow.
Rankings.....we started as #20 and OU #3.Where should we be next
week?I'm thinking right around #10 or so?One thing is
FOR SURE, wherever we're ranked next week, it's gotta be AHEAD of OU....BYU#10
Tim Griffin: It would be easy to blame Sam Bradford’s shoulder injury. But
BYU won this game because it converted key plays and took advantage of critical
Oklahoma penalties and mistakes. The Sooners fumbled three times, losing two.
And they were flagged 12 times for 94 yards in penalties.Graham
Watson: I point out that BYU was able to stay with OU with Bradford in the game
so that no one can use Bradford’s injury as an excuse for BYU’s win
Hey Ute fans, we appreciate the respect you've given us tonight. This was
huge!!! It was not quite as well played as the Utes thumping of Alabama last
season, I admit, but it was a fantastic win against an elite program...on the
road. And definitely a smack in the face to the BCS. I must say
that I cheer for the Utes when they play anyone other than the Cougars. I cheer
for all MWC teams. I do hate the Utes in November, but I hope we're both
undefeated. Here's to someone outside the BCS given a national title shot!!
Great win. Hats off to the Cougars. Great job of representing the conference.
although I have only read the first page of comments. Thanks to the classy Utah
fans who congratulated BYU. I'm guessing the Utah fans who lack class probably
didn't leave comments. Or claimed that we won because Bradford got knocked out,
not having seen that the only touchdown scored by Oklahoma WITH Bradford came on
a short field after a muffed punt reception.
There needs to be no asterik what so ever. I want to shove Herbstreets
Microphone down his throat. OU didn't loose because Bradford went down, they
lost because a better team won. I am a huge Ute fan but I loved the game. We
were screaming at the TV after that horrible PI call. The post game interview
was awesome. Coach M class act Bro. Class Act. Not to mention no one made
mention that BYU was without Unga. Injuries are part of the game get over it.
Go MWC and Good Job Coug's!!!!!!
re: BleedCougarBlue | 10:24 p.m. Sept. 5, 2009 Don't be so
unilateral.By your logic, Wouldn't have OU had more points as well?
After further review, the Sooners would have tallyed more as
I'm ashamed to say I didn't think it was possible!What a beautiful
thing!Besides everything else this win meant to BYU fans, it also
held at bay morning (afternoon, evening etc) sickness in a certain pregnant
young mother!! SO keep it up, Cougars---you're more effective than
medicine, doctors and all other remedies combined!
Sloppy or not, OU was picked to win by more than 3 touchdowns. The high speed
offence that was hailed last year just got shut down to 13 points. Something
Florida and Texas could barley do. So sloppy, oh yea! Byu could have been up
21-10 at half time but shot theselves in the foot. OU handed them the game in
the 3rd quarter but Hall was a little petrified by the 90 foot long video
screen! He got it done in the end, and this is awesome. The BYU D shut down one
of the most powerful offenses in the country. And that in itself, was awesome!
Lets beat up on Tulane next week!
Oh, and by the way, as a Cougar fan of nearly 40 years, I fully agree that
Utah's victory over Alabama last January was more impressive than BYU's victory
over OU tonight (which was incredibly sloppy). I was cheering and hollering all
through the Sugar Bowl, and I truly felt that Utah should have been the national
champion last year. I want to see the MWC continue to embarrass the
BSC until something finally changes. I'd love for it to be BYU every year, but
if it's not BYU, I'm happy if it's Utah or TCU or even UTEP. I truly believe our
conference is just as good as any other (including USC and the Nine Dwarfs), and
I want the MWC to just whup all the OOC teams they play.
Congratulations BYU. You will lose to Utah, but a one loss season is still
amazing. Keep up the good work.
Great Win Cougars! Loved the way the Defense played Physical and got after the
QB. Great Job all the way around, keep it up Cougars!P.S. I dont
want to hear anyone say BYU cant play with big boys! Go Cougars !!!
Games are not won and lost by the starting 22, it takes a team effort. Everyone
has to be ready to play. BYU was ready, Oklahoma was not. Doesn't matter what
happened to Bradford.
YES! I cheer for BYU--and taking each week one at a time, I'm rooting for the
Cougs to win all the rest! Let's hope THIS is the BCS year! Here are
a few other teams I'm now rooting for: * The Sooners. Come on, OU,
win the rest of your games! Or at least all but 1 so you're not playing for the
BCS championship anyway. Even with Bradford out (genuinely sorry to see that,
BTW), you've got the personnel to take care of business. Besides, BYU and the
MWC need the quality win. Go Sooners!* Boise State. Great job
handing the Ducks their own heads--and don't stumble the rest of the way. Keep
giving the BCS powers that be the major headache of TWO deserving undefeated
"mid-majors" in the top of the BCS rankings.* Utes: I hope you win
all your games, too--until Nov. 28. See you then for some payback. :)Go MWC! Bring down the BCS!
I was torn between BYU winning and losing. But I am glad they won, not by the
largest of margins but they won. Hopefully now, the MWC will get some respect,
but I doubt it if the pollsters and the BCS presidents have anything to say
about it. BYU has a good chance to break the BCS for the first time, but they
need to win all their games first. 1 down, 11 to go. Congrats BYU!Go UTES!!!
Three Points:1. Nebraksa 49, Florida Atlantic 32. BYU put OU
out of their chance for BCS Championship, also put OU out of its misery for this
season. I thought for sure OU would beat BYU by 50 points.3. God didn't
want me to go to church tomorrow and trash talk BYU with the fellow saints. I've
been humbled again. Miracles do happen, I just didn't expect it Texas
tonight. Also: Husker record this season under the great Bo Polini
10-2, expect a major bowl invite - GO BIG RED!!!
Another awesome win for the Mountain West. With Utah representing in the Sugar
bowl and now BYU coming through and beating Oklahoma maybe the monuntain west
will continue getting the respect they deserve.
>Why should U fans eat crow? We're a) the better program. b) have a much more
impressive victory against 'Bama last year.Yes, it's nice that Ute
fans have the opportunity to get a little taste of the success that BYU fans
have been enjoying for most of the past few decades. Keep it up for another ten
years or so, and you will probably have a solid program!
re: Chase SL | 10:15 p.m. Sept. 5, 2009 ESPN has a credibility
issue. Think of it as the Extra Special Patriots Network. That is when they are not spreading Yankees or LeBron James Propaganda.
The delay of game penalty Oklahoma took on 4th and goal may have been the
difference. Instead of a chance to punch it in for a touchdown and 10 point
lead, they had to take the safe route and kick the field goal, keeping BYU
within 6. That is really the only thing you can definitely was definitely
caused by Bradford being out. One the other end, BYU also got a delay penalty
in pretty much the same position, but it was on 3rd down, not 4th. Much less
costly, and they were able to put it in for the TD.Should we now
change it to "Jacobsen is still open?"Has a nice ring to it, doesn't
GO BYU! GO UTAH VS OREGON! GO TCU VS THE ACC! GO MOUNTAIN WEST!!!
See what Happens when you play respectable football!!YOU GET RESPECT..
Congratulations for a really greatwin...Now practice, you made a lot of
mistakes, but you you still stuck it to the Okies. we want to see your best game
when we come visiting Nov 28th. A really great opening game and good luck on the
rest of your season. But you are gonna have to get it "all" together on
the 28th of Nov.
Looks like having Anae up in the booth, Doman on the field, and Bronco turning
the defense's reins over completely to Jaime Hill made a big difference! It looks like we WILL have a defense this year!GO
gracious on their posts - dramatic difference from their pre-game posts. Thanks for the class.
I wa at the game & it was awesome! I was amazed by the class that the majority
of OK fans showed after the game. I think BYU & UT fans could learn a thing or
two from them. Way to go Cougs; keep it going!
As a WWE fan, I enjoyed seeing WWE announcer (& OU fan) JR Ross looking like
he'd been hit by The Big Show & Mark Henry and then super kicked by HBK.
Something needs to be said about the OU fans. Absolutely classy bunch. Probably
had half a dozen OU fans congragulate us after the game (as if my friends and I
did anything). Certainly different than how we treat Utah, I hope we show
similar courtesy to other teams. I remember having a similar
feelings after visiting Notre Dame.
YOU GO COUGARS!! Congrats on playing an awesome game... (I take back what I
said earlier)Your DEFENSE was what made the difference, they deserve
the game ball. That delay blitz by a linebacker sealed it. Kudos to the game
planners.Goal line stand: that was "sick" how the Coug D-line held
OK out.I will root for you the rest of the way (except in late
November!)Go Cougs, and GOOOOOOO UTES!
re: Utah Fans | 10:12 p.m. Sept. 5, 2009 //I know that there were
many Ute fans that didn't give BYU any credit, and you know who you are. All I
want to know is how does crow taste?//I'll let ya know if you can
tell me how humble pie tastes? Wait, Austin Collie took all of it to Indy.
Payne has to be on the bench for kick-offs!!!!!!
CONGRATS, COUGARS!!!!!!!!!!!14-13 when it really SHOULD have been
17-10.Why?We had one field goal taken away when we
penalized ourselves. We made the first one, got penalized and missed our second
attempt. That cost us 3.Then, we made TWO mistakes on OU's long
drive right before the half, giving them a whopping 30 yards, putting them into
field goal position.Translation: we beat them but if we'll polish
our game even more we can show the nation we're even BETTER than we played
tonight.NICE JOB, COUGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Replace ACC with MWC in the BCS? Never happen. One word -- population, which, in
media terms means advertising dollars.Go Cougars!
Thanks to all the Utah fans congratulating BYU. Like many of you, all I want is
for BYU and Utah to both go undefeated and settle it all in November. And I hope
we both beat TCU. Badly. :-)
re: Anonymous | 8:24 p.m. Sept. 5, 2009 will they get arrogant, go
to Nola, and get stomped?I just wish Collie were still around to
pander to the base and rile up the opposition with his God given humility.
Observations:1. Who woulda thought BYU's DEFENSE would hold OU to
13???2. Who woulda thought BYU's OFFENSE could drive for 9
minutes?????3. Except for choosing to go for a long field goal
instead of turning 4th and 14 over to Landry, I'm not cutting OU any excuses for
missing their quarterback. They moved the ball better in the 3rd quarter than
they did the first half.4. Remember that the difference between the
OU's of the world and MWC teams is that they have 3rd and 4th string kids that
are faster / more talented than our starters... we've been told that again and
again.5. Utah, thanks for the kudos! This IS what it feels like,
you know it and now we know it. Again. Not to start the pressure again, but
here's to two undefeated MWC teams playing after Thanksgiving. Lot of games
between now and then, and TCU, but this is a great place to start.
Great win, but there are still 11 more games to go. This is only one of the
dowen wins needed for a BCS or NC game. Most important game is next wek at
Tulane. Remember TCU losing to a terrible SMU team in '05 after beating these
re: PDX | 10:06 p.m. Sept. 5, 2009 Respect is earned; the MWC moved
another step closer. Its the Big East and Notre Dame that don't
deserve their BCS entitlements.
Thanks for being gracious (most of you). It's good that we cheer for each other
for all other games.
Six defensive stops within the 5-yard line, including a weak pi call = hard
earned victory and rapid trip up the polls. Who would of ever guessed that the
"D" would be the stars tonight. Give them all a game ball, and forget about
Payne's ego and bench him for the freshman!
Horrible Kick, just about lost the game. Watch what you are doing.
now lets OU wins out so the win stays relevant. Good win for BYU and for the
conference. Let's keep it rolling by beating Clemson, Oregon, FSU, etc.
Let the Yewt whining begin!.... | 9:47 p.m. Sept. So like I said
Yewts, let the whining begin. I'm gonna ride this victory the WHOOOOOOOOOLE
season, right up until we destroy you in Provo.Hugs and kisses -
BleedCougarBlue-------------Come back to reality BYU
hasn't beaten Utah by more then 7 points in over 10+ years. Great
win but you beat a team by one point and a missed field goal so don't get
carried away.Xoxxxoox - Uteology
ESPN stated this was the biggest win in MWC history!
Great job today BYU. Great job Thursday Utah. MWC is a major conference.
Respectable showing for Weber State. I love being from Utah during football
Am I disappointed? A little. But, the better team tonight won. BYU's DC is a
genius for now. That was a sloppy game & less penalties needed to be
called on both teams.Between the coaches on ESPN & ABC, I had a hard
time watching tonight. Thank goodness the Auburn game was
entertaining as was the USC game earlier today. Even, the Navy/OSU game was but
the results weren't.
To: Let the Yewt whining begin!.... | 9:47 p.m.Does nto seem to me
too many UTES whining.
The only team I hate worse than the Team Down South is Oklahoma. Nice going
lads! I saw history being made twice tonight. First you beat Oklahoma in their
own backyard. Second, Bronco actually said he had fun tonight. Congrats on
both accounts.A Ute fan.
Thanks to all the Ute fans cheering us Cougs on. To those who still are making
excuses about this win....both teams were talent deprived (coug O-line and no
Unga), so don't say with Bradford out, BYU didn't have a chance. This was a
solid win for BYU, but more importantly the MWC. Finally BYU can carry the
banner that Utah did last year. GO ALL MWC TEAMS!!! THAT ESPECIALLY INCLUDES
THE UTES AND TCU!!! Make a statement, and get that BCS bid.
Congratulations Cougars on an amazing win. Great job on behalf of the
conference. I cheered for you throughout the game. However, this is arguably
the second biggest win in MWC history. The stakes, the build up,
the hype, and the pressure were much more intense in Utah's Sugar Bowl. A
post-season BCS bowl is a much bigger deal than a season opener. Utah's '09
Sugar Bowl is the biggest win in MWC history, no contest.Further,
Utah beat Alabama much more convincingly and actualy slaughtered a BCS
...even talking about Utah? They didn't play today!
Great job BYU, Utah, and the MWC!
I know that there were many Ute fans that didn't give BYU any credit, and you
know who you are. All I want to know is how does crow taste? What an
incredible game and win!! GOOOOO COOOOOUGARS!!!!!
Congrats Cougars! Way to represent!
Why should U fans eat crow? We're a) the better program. b) have a much more
impressive victory against 'Bama last year. Not by one point either. c)
Oklahoma=Michigan? d) we still where red. Max is still QB. Game in Provo come
November is still ours.Good game to the team, way to eard MWC
RESPECT but BYU fans, pleeeeease don't attempt to talk your way into the BCS
again. It obviously hasn't worked in the past so if you plan on doing it this
year I will hate you forever.
"Anonymous | 10:01 p.m. Sept. 5, 2009 Well, Oklahoma's no Utah State, but
we'll take the win nonetheless."TOOOOOO FUNNY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Defense really came up big time for BYU. Not the same team as last year. GO COUGARS!
NICE WORK COUGARS!!! The only team I hate more than BYU is Boise State...you
stuck it to OU!This does wonders for the MWC and all but erases the
loss in the Vegas Bowl!BCS IS DEAD!!
Max Hall is a different QB this year, throws 2 picks and instead of losing his
head he marches the cougs down the field for the game winning TD. And the
Defense is AWESOME!
To: HAHAHAHA | 8:31 p.m. You must not have read the posts before
your post. The UTE posts have been gracious as opposed to your post. Your
attitude is why most UTE fans dislike your type of BYU fan. Don't bother to
respond to my post if you are able to read it since I will not read you
and am delighted to be proven wrong. I am happy tosee the class of the Sooner
program and it is nice to see so many positive comments from Ute fans. Other
that Oregon this has been a pretty classy weekend!
Mountain West demands respect!
The boys ROCKED it today! I was at Cougar Stadium for the Miami game in 1990,
and for some reason, today's win was MUCH MORE exciting (and I watched the game
all the way from MAUI, Hawai'i).GOOOOOO COUGARS!!! As us Hawaiians
say... I MUA!!!
Congratulations to BYU! I was jumping up and down like it was TCU winning the
game. Great win for the conference! To see a conference mate beat the hated
Sooners is just awesome. Go MWC!
BYU's top 5 biggest wins ever1. 1984 over Michigan to win the National
Championship2. 1990 over defending champ and the following year's
champ #1 Miami3. 1984 over #3 Pitt to help win the National
Championship4. 2009 over #3 Oklahoma as a 21 point dog against the
reigning Heisman winner and BCS Championship loser5. 2000 over Utah
in Lavell's final game, last minute drive. Doman, Pittman, Staley play big.
Towards the end of the first half, even before Bradford went down, I was
EXTREMELY impressed with the way that BYU was dominating the stats -- all but
the one that counts the most: the score. I was thinking that BYU could pull off
an upset, but, even if they didn't, just by holding their own, they were showing
that they are a solid football team. Yes, losing Bradford hurt OUs chances, but
this game was really all about the defense on both sides of the field.BYU -- way to stay in it all game and great win in the end!Go
Man, I about FREAKED when we shanked our last kickoff out of bounds and OU got
to start on their 40 yard line!Gotta hand it to our defense.....you
guys SAVED the game!Congrats, Cougars!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well, Oklahoma's no Utah State, but we'll take the win nonetheless.
My check for $5000 will be in the mail on Tuesday. Don't you worry. I am a man
of my word.
Media alert: ABC wanted to make a strong point that Oklahoma was deflated after
the QB was taken out. Sounds like the media/BCS excuse artist are already in
action. I can hardly wait to see the excuses stacking up. BYU, you just got
these guys on a bad day and the you took a cheap shot at their QB. Just wait/
the excuses will get out of pile up big time.
Nice win. You got it done tonight against the big boys. Great for BYU, Great
for the MWC!
I love being on the right side of upsets. So glad the Y stepped up...if we keep
this up with Utah and TCU also playing great, maybe we can officially join the
big boys club.(Side note, thanks to most for keeping the comments
classy - I think this is the most polite I've seen them...it helps when
everyone's team is winning I guess!)
the season ended with a great win for the MWC it now started with another great
win, Let us keep it up BYU and Utah. It will be hard but if both are 11-0 going
into the the riviarly game it may be the game that decides who plays for a
I am SO glad Barry Switzer was at the game to see BYU stick it to his old
team!HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!BOOM YER SOONER!GO COUGARS!!!!!!!!!!!
The Miami win was better (the way Detmer avoided the pass rush was a thing of
beauty), but awesome win tonight nonetheless. Who would have thunk the defense
would be the reason for the win? That was an incredible goal-line stand.Hopefully the kinks/jitters/kicking will be fixed before the Tulsa game
Okay, I admit it. I am a BYU fan and I was hoping that the cougs would just keep
it close. Major kudos to Jaime Hill and the work he did preparing the coug
defense. Kudos to coach Mendenhall for finally letting go and allowing an
excellent coach to take on the D Coordinator role. This was a solid
win that could have wound up being a 20 - 10 win for the cougs.
Anyone who thought BYU didn't have a chance is just a lemming who fell for the
hype of the always overrated Big 12, SEC, Big Ten, etc.
I am another UTE fan just wanting to say congratulations on a great win. Down with the BCS; Up with the MWC.
Congrats, great for the MWC. But the truth is if you are watching any of the
sports channels, NOBODY is saying...WOW, BYU is somethin', it's all about
Bradford going down. So don't expect much respect, besides you didn't play that
well. I think Baylor or UNLV could have done the same. But at least you can now
say you have done something for the MWC, 2-22 against top opponents, super!
1984 all over again? | 9:24 p.m. Sept. 5, 2009And all u yewt fans with
your dumb predictions of how OU was going to steamroll us 70-0 and Max Hall was
going to killed and throw 20 interceptions, blah blah blah - you can take all
your dumb predictions and comments and sit on them and SPIN!-------I am willing to bet my right arm that you were one of those
that said Utah was going to get rolled by Alabama? BYU played well
enough to win so congradulations to them. Like I said after the Bama game only
losers make excuses winners just point to the scoreboard.Would
Bradford have made a difference? Probably. But it wasn't Bradford allowing BYU
to score the winning TD in the 4th and missing a field goal. Just like Utah
against TCU last year.
Holy freaking cow!!Ok, I went to the Miami game. I don't remember
exactly but I'm pretty sure a week or two later we lost to UTEP! Stay focused!! Not let down! Tulane can be tricky and not a team to ignore,
nor Florida State. Actually, none of them! What a hoot! If all goes
well Utah, TCU and BYU only have loses to each other, and one of them (this year
BYU) goes BCS busting. The MWC is really moving up the food chain. They need to
dump the ACC and replace it with the MWC. Seriously!Congrats to BYU.
I was rooting for a respectable game, had no idea you could pull this off! I
wanted you to but....BIG TIME shock! I think the most shocking was the defense
against Sam Bradford. I know he was hurt and didn't play the second half but he
did play the first half and only managed 10 points!Shocking, just
shocking!Go BYU!Go MWC!
but was hollering for the Blue tonight. Way to represent, BYU.
Exceptional game, and huge props to Maxie, who toughed it out and put together a
drive when it mattered. And that defensive stand at the end? Just
stunning. Way to go. See you in November!
1. 6 play goal line stand won the game for BYU.2. The defense played
solid...especially fundamentals. Hardly any missed tackles and several
open-field one-on-one tackles against great athletes. 3. Hall
actually truly spread the ball around 3-4 catches for 5 receivers. Didn't see
that last year.4. OU cornerbacks must have been great...never really
even challenged them and there were several coverage sacks on Hall.5. Great win! Everyone in the country watching footbal tonight would have
been watching this game. 6. Bronco was very classy and didn't seem
surprised at all. Whoever called the D-plays tonight was awesome. Props to
coaches and players for working hard in the offseason...it paid off...thank
Isn't going into Sooner land and beating #3 bigger than beating #1 at home, as
we did with Miami in 1990? Granted, Miami was defending champs, and that loss
kept them from winning three national championships in a row...but still, teams
just don't go into Sooner land and come away with a win very often.
From Tim Griffin at ESPN.com:"What it means: The Sooners’
national title hopes have been dealt a staggering blow. They aren’t dead,
but they are on life support. And with Bradford’s status uncertain, their
hopes for a fourth-straight Big 12 title look pretty slim now, too. It also
provides the Mountain West Conference with a strong national calling card
victory that arguably might be the biggest in the conference’s history."
BYU!!!! BYU!!! BYU !!!
First of all, I wanna say congrats to the Cougs for an amazing win. Huge Ute fan
here, but anything that helps the MWC, I'm all for... But did I read that
correctly? Did you actually just compare Alabama losing an O lineman to Oklahoma
losing their heisman QB and All-American TE? I laughed pretty hard at that.
Injuries are part of the game, so nobody's putting asterisks next to anything.
Utah earned the win in the Sugar Bowl and BYU earned their win in Texas tonight.
I know some not-so-classy Ute fan posted a stupid comment, but did you really
have to try and stoop down to that level? For the most part everybody's been
very gracious on here and that's great... We need to see more of that. I get
tired of reading the cheap shots after every game from both sides. Anyway, let's
keep up the support on both sides. These wins against BCS teams are good for
everyone. Congrats again Cougs! Can't wait til we meet in November.Go Utes!!
Well done, Y. But do realize the injuries to the key players at OU. The Y defense is improved. The offense is not really prime time, too many
mistakes. And the season will show these facts.
This Ute fan cheered the Cougs. Way to go BYU, maybe the BCS is listening.
Good win Cougars. Your defense played awesome and Hall played with composure on
that last drive. Hopefully he can use that for future difficult situations. Thanks for the comments Ute fans. They are very classy. Go Mtn West
and Boise St. Re: JohnDon't make all of us Y fans look
dumb because of you. You just got done arguing how people shouldn't be talking
about what would have happened if Bradford has stayed in and then you talk about
what would have happened if Collie had stayed. BYU also plays Utah State later,
Was at the game and about lost it when BYU kicked the ball OB after the TD.
Nice gift of 20 yards and a couple of miutes! OU fans were very classy after
the lost - unlike another team in red that BYU plays....
Thanks to the classy fans on here, especially Ute fans! How about you come out
later in the season and keep this sportsmanship and shut up your classless
fellow fans when they start to trash. Again, thanks for being
"Bradford got hurt!""Their star tight end was hurt and didn't
play!""Their second team quarterback had a hangnail!"Whaaaaaa!!!To this I will say:When Bradford WAS IN we
played them toe to toe, 7 to 7, until OU kicked a field goal that TWO Cougar
mistakes GAVE THEM 30 yds on that field goal drive right before the half.BYU's Unga didn't play a single down due to an injury.Bauman
(sp?)...our linebacker....got hurt early in the first quarter. Our
DBs have been banged up virtually the entire fall practice. (And, oh, BTW,
they're almost exclusively a bunch of slow white guys, so we've been
told.....)So like I said Yewts, let the whining begin. I'm gonna
ride this victory the WHOOOOOOOOOLE season, right up until we destroy you in
Provo.Hugs and kisses - BleedCougarBlue
Well done Cougars. Well done.
OK, I'm not one of these Coug fans on here using the moniker of "Ute Fan" - I
haven't pulled for BYU in a long, long time. But I must admit to having a
change of heart during the game and pulling for the underdogs, er, cats. The Utah spanking then #5 Alabama and BYU's beating of #3 Oklahoma
tonight is further proof that the elite teams of the MWC (Utah, TCU, BYU) are
the elite teams in the NCAA. I don't want to read one more comment on here from
someone saying it was a fluke or that the MWC doesn't belong in a BCS bowl game
because it's garbage. The best of the MWC can play with anyone,
How many local teams have to win big games before we realize that the MWC can
play with the big boys? This was hard tough nose football. Let's be real.BYU had
shut OU down before Bradford went down. BYU had no starting rb and had been
riddled with injuries and still won. This was not more of a fluke than the Utes
win over Alabama last year. Go Cougars! Go Utes! Go MWC!
Nice win guys. Good for everybody in the conference...keep it up.
>The only reason you win this game is because Bradford goes down in the first
half.So...what happened to all that scoring OU was supposed to do in
the first half? The undeniable fact is that BYU, even without any
experience on the offensive line, and without their star running back, and
without their defensive captain, went into what was basically OU's home field
and outhit, outmuscled, and outplayed the Sooners. If there's an asterisk, it
should be that BYU won even under those extremely negative conditions.
Glad to see OU fall because of the whole BCS sham. It will be an interesting
season for the MWC.
it is weird that some people doubt that BYU had a chance to win the game. I'm
Utes fan and I know that BYU has a good chance to win the game.Any
of TCU, BYU or UTES has a chance to win any game against any team of the biggest
20.I still hate Max Hall, he is the one thing I hate so much about
the cougars, he is equal to Kobe Bryant to me :)
I was telling all my BYU co-workers that I thought the Y would pull it off
this week. Looks like I was right. BYU's defense looked great. Offense played a
lot better than expected. I don't think that I've ever seen so many flags thrown
in one game. The injury that Bradford suffered looked exactly like the one BJ
had in the opener against Oregon State in 07. Very tough break for them. But congrats on the HUGE win. I was definitely pulling for you guys. I
hate the BCS system, and this was another kick in the teeth for them directly
from the good old MWC. The Y will definitely be a tough team to beat this year.
Awesome job! Go UTES and Go Cougars!! See you guys in November...
"BOISE STATE | 9:01 p.m. Sept. 5, 2009 Don't get to excited Cougars, that
was a sloppy game on both sides and Boise beat Oregon. I don't think they will
put BYU ahead of Boise in the polls."Yeah right, a win over an
"overrated" Oregon team is not the same as a win over #3 Oklahoma. Also, how
many Top 25 teams remain on BSU's schedule? Have fun playing small potato teams
like U. of Idaho. If BYU keeps winning, there will be no BCS bid
for you. Anyway, Utah and TCU still have great chances of edging ahead of you
in the polls given your wimpy schedule. Now go away with your
negativity so we can keep celebrating in Utah and savor this rare moment of Utah
and BYU fans coming together.
As a Ute alum I have to admit BYU surprised me today. Congrats on a great win
with or without Bradford, the BCS teams need to ROLL MWC teams if they refuse to
give us a automatic bid. P.S. I don't want to hear another word
form BYU fans about how Utah was lucky against TCU missed field goals and Bama
wasn't motivated and missing a OL.
That was going to donate $5000 to the Y if they won?Ante-up.
>Its a lot easier when you can game plan for a missing running back than when
you lose a Heisman Trophy winning QB.Yeah, Bradford threw for so
many yards and Oklahoma scored so many touchdowns in the first half, and there
was a huge decline in the second half...Oh, wait. That didn't happen...
It's great to read all the positive comments from ute fans and cougar fans. This
is great for the conference. I am cheering for Utah to take care of business at
San Jose and then Oregon. BYU, you need to take care of business at Tulane and
Florida State at home. If we both are 3-0 going into week 4 the MWC should have
a couple of teams in the top 10 and the BCS will be running scared worrying the
rest of the year having not just one team crashing the party, but 2. Go Utes Go
Congrats BYU on a GREAT WIN!A road victory over the #3-ranked team
with a game changing goal-line stand.Deja Vu Cougar fans!!!----------------------To all of the classy Ute fans acknowledging
a great win: THANKS!To all of the BYU haters who will use any excuse
in the book -- penalties, injuries, other team's mistakes, whatever -- to try to
minimize a great BYU win, you're just spitting into the wind! The
ONLY thing the rest of the sports world will be looking at 2 or 3 weeks from now
is:Brigham Young 14Oklahoma 13
So happy to have seen our very good friend Barry Switzer at the Game....to help
us kick `off the 25th Anniversary of The 1984 National Championshipship. I
think it would now be fitting if the City of Provo would clean up and revitalize
the sewer lagoon that they named after him.....and Barry the next time you eat
crow ...at least pick the feathers off....They really don't look that great
sticking out of those teeth of yours.....And where's you're buddy the
Gumball??? Brian Gumble... I have just one question of you....OKLA...WHO ???
Sorry, but I'm neither a U or a Y fan. This is just a good warmup for real
football that starts next weekend in the NFL.
This was a fantastic win! Hall erased the TCU, Utah, and Arizona games with that
9-10 last drive. Great calls by Anae. Pitta played like an NFL TE and Pendleton
will be an all-conference LB for 3 years. The new dbs have some real talent. The
o-line played like veterans. I can't wait to get Unga back. The team needs to
get this win out of their system fast and focus on a tough road trip to New
Orleans and another tough top 2 team in FSU. GO Cougs and Go MWC.
One correction to the article - it should have said "the first road win against
a Top 5 opponent since Pittsburgh in 1984" since Miami was ranked #1 when they
came to town.
That was amazing? For those of you concerned about a one-point win?
It is significant when you are supposed to lose by 22 to the THIRD ranked team
in the country! Can't agree more with the Mitch Payne
comment...missed field goal AND kicks it out of bounds with three minutes left.
Not the first time he's ever done that either. Find a new kicker.BTW, where are Ernest T Bass and SoCal Ute tonight? Their internet connection
must be on the fritz... :)
WAY TO GO COOGS! I was ready to file for divorce after the Vegas Bowl. I'm so
sorry, will u forgive me? I'm ready to date again. Please? And go
Utes & TCU. We want all 3 undefeated heading into conference play!
Those of you who say "if Bradford had been in the game".... Let's not forget why
Bradford was not in the game. He got his butt kicked!!!! Bradford spent more
time picking himself up off the turf in the short time he played against BYU
than he did the while winning the Heisman last year!!! The BYU defense is the
reason Bradford was not in the game to win it!!!!!Great Victory.
Better than the Miami win!!!!!!!Go COUGS!!!!
Great game. Article contradicted itself. Said this was the Y's first win over
top 5 team since 84 over Pitt. Then mentioned win over Miami in 90. Wasn't
Miami #1 then, isn't that a top five team.
I loved the Blitz package BYU showed tonight. Good things happen when you put
pressure on the QB. Awesome. I think they learned something from the UTES last
Doug Robinson. Who's crazy now? That's exactly what I was thinking
at the end of the game. GO COUGS!!! Yeah baby!! What a win.
Never Barry Switzer's comment about he didn't think BYU deserved the National
title back in the 80's. In your face Barry!!Go UTAH UTES!!
COUGARS STUN DESERET NEWS SPORTS "EXPERTS"HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAGreat day to be a COUGAR!!!
From Utes fan, Congrates for the big win tonigh, way to represent the MWC. Now
all the eyes wide open on the MWC. TCU, UTES and BYU proved that the can beat
the best. The three teams deserve a shot at the Overrated BCS and
hopefully it will be a great year for the three teams.Boise state is
over rated, and the MWC will be fun to watch this year.
Congrats BYU. The MVP of the game was #70 Brandon on the OU offensive line. SO
many penalties - thanks, we owe ya!Thought I was gonna die when
Payne kicked it out of bounds - that always happens. He needs to be benched,
can't even kick to the 15. Good poise by Hall on the last drive, but
still too many picks on stupid throws into quintuple coverage.
I don't want to hear any excuses from BYU haters saying junk like, 'Well if
Bradford hadn't got hurt THEN it would have been a COMPLETELY different game and
BYU for sure would have got killed'. Baloney! What about all that superior DEPTH
that OU has? What about BYU hanging with them while Bradford was still playing?
Why couldn't he help OU score 80 points in the first half against BYU's 'weak,
slow, non-athletic' D? Huh? Huh? Yeah, thought so.GO
Hey Easy BYU, Your ignorance of the facts is amazing. Even with Bradford
in the game he was held to 96 yards. BYU didn't have its best running back and
still won. BYU practically gave the game away (and left 10 points on the field)
with turnovers and still won. Bradford was a non-factor. Defense was.
Let me add my opinion to the other Utah fans to say congrats to BYU for the
great win. Let's keep it up MWC. Go Utes!
Great game Cougs right down to the last minute!Utah represented the MWC
fabulously last year so maybe it's your turn this year!
I have to admit that I was going to be up getting other things done by the third
quarter. I am still in shock, and I still can't force myself to do
anything productive. Absolutely amazing, especially the defense, where did those
guys come from.People keep talking about Bradford going out, who
knows what the outcome might have been, but just remember who put him out. It's
not like he had one of his own lineman roll on him or something. Just another
Excuse me... | 8:39 p.m. Sept. 5, 2009but do you know where I can
find an asterisk?---You can find what you're looking for
in the Sugar Bowl record book, next to 2008...Andre Smith. (I wasn't going to
bring that up, but some (not all) Ute fans can be so blind)
Bradford only put up 10 points before getting hurt, and seven came from a BYU
turnover, so those who taunt that BYU only won because he got hurt, need to shut
up, and learn how football games are played. He wasn't exactly lighting up the
BYU defense when he was healthy and playing. Actually, he spent a lot of time
picking himself up off the ground. Excellent defensive schemes and execution.Oklahoma should be thanking the gods that Collie chose to leave for the
NFL, or this one would have been a blowout, with or without mr heisman
trophy.Good win, solid defense, and if they can eliminate the
turnovers, there is no one on the schedule that can beat them. At
least it was a real team, and a real game, not some pansy opponent like
I am way excited about the win. The only thing that bothered me was the
infatuation Anae has with Tonga. He kept giving him the ball and he kept losing
yards. I am shocked Diluigi didnt get more carries but Kariya was great
Great win. Congratulations, BYU.
OK, I said BYU was better than most folks were willing to give them credit for.
And I predicted an OK win...so Props to the Y. Fire away with the juvenile
remarks...you earned your star today.congrats.Ute fan
BYU 14 OU 13Hey all u doomsday predictors, that's why they play the
games!!!!!!!!Looks like BYU has some top talent after all.GO COUGARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Unga out, 4 turnovers, punt muffs, sacks... and we still win. How sweet was
Awesome job guys! I couldn't be happier for you and the MWC. We need TCU to take
it Clemson and Virginia, Utah into Oregon, and BYU needs to complete the hat
trick with FSU. (CSU over CU would be awesome). You really held your
weight and made all us proud. My Utes will be ready in November in
Good win let's get Tulane next. Good to see the whole MWC doing well. Even
though it's 2 AQ conference teams it's nice watching Washington hang with LSU. I
hope they find a way to win. Pitta is the man. What a MONSTER!!!!
I put on a ute hat last week for the first time in my life of 62 years but my
blood as far as college goes runs blue and when the utse play I cheer for them.
I think it is a shame that all the Coug and ute fans are not a band of brothers
except for the one game.GO COUGSGO UTES From the BIG
OU only scored 13, not 14No one gave BYU a chance. Everyone is
focusing on Bradford being out of the game. By the way, good, hard-nose hits
from BYU knocked him out of the game. No one wanted Bradford to go down, and
Clawson's hits were not dirty, but you have to give the defense credit! Bradford
was not lighting the defense up before he got knocked out. Don't say that it
would have been different, because no one knows that, and I don't believe it
would have been much different.I heard Lou Holtz say on ESPN, OU
wasn't the only team playing without their best players because of injuries. BYU
was missing two of their best linemen, and Harvey Unga. They did it without
them, and BYU was supposed to be the team that didn't have any depth. Guess
what? BYU stepped up, OU didn't. . . end of story. I don't want to
hear anything about lucky. That is what losers always cry! BYU made their luck!
In a blog earlier this week, poster "Crimson Club" PROMISED (his word not mine)
to make a $5000 donation to BYU if the Cougars beat the Sooners. So, Crimson
Club, are you a man of honor, or are you just going to disappear for a year or
so? I'll be looking for what you have to say if you return to these blogs
without a Cougar Club confirmation number.Go Cougars!
This is like Christmas.
There were some real surprises in this game. 1. BYU has a defense.
They played smart, hard and with intensity. They never let up. They also have
talent. I think the Defense won this game. This is the hardest I have ever seen
BYU hit in years. 2. The coaches appear much more mature. They had a
very well thought out game plan and the players executed it fairly well. 3. The patched together O line is very good, both on the run and in pass
protection. 4. BYU played with poise on the road, in a big game. 5. The young running backs are pretty good. This is just the
first win of a long season. There are a lot of hard games ahead including next
week on the road at Tulane. This game is an important giant step
forward for both BYU and the conference. Thanks for playing so well and hard.
WOW, WHAT A WIN!!! It's a great time to be a Cougar fan! And all u yewt fans
with your dumb predictions of how OU was going to steamroll us 70-0 and Max Hall
was going to killed and throw 20 interceptions, blah blah blah - you can take
all your dumb predictions and comments and sit on them and SPIN!
I don't know what this will do to the rankings next week, but it goes to show
that preseason rankings have no meaning. OU was not #3, and BYU was not #20.
There shouldn't be any polls until October.Way to go BYU, and
another feather in the cap of the MWC!!
Boise State Fan: You know, I was having a lot of fun watching the BYU game and
enjoyed doing it a BYU friend. And I was really enjoying the fact that Utah and
BYU fans were not taking cheap shots at each other for a change. But then we
had to have some jerk from Boise State giving us the typical inferiority complex
idiot comment. We were cheering for your win against Oregon, now show some
class and give BYU their day in the sun for a great game. Great
game BYU you did a great joy representing the state and the MWC. Very
impressive. Now take out Florida State.
Dick Hertz owes byu money!!! class of 03
Byu, congrats on the huge win!Byu fans - STOP with the taunting of
utah fans. We are proud that our fellow conference rival stuck it to the bcs and
the arrogant elitists. We are happy you won. Enjoy it. But, you had better knock
it off with the taunting or else.
Cougars..... respect. thats really all i can say, way to earn yourselves and the
conference some well deserved attention for the quality of football that is
being played in the beehive state and the mountain west. NICE W! Although it is so much fun to revel in the suffering of your rival from time
to time, think of what is possible when together we go out and punch these
egotistical football programs, media outlets, and doubters from around the
country in the mouth with GREAT football. Enjoy this win tonight!! Bronco... way to be a class act tonight, i think every ute fan should
recognize his remarks were for the conference as much as his own program after
the game.GO UTAH!!!
The only reason you win this game is because Bradford goes down in the first
half. You won the game but as bad as Oklahoma looked, they still had a shot late
in the game.Enjoy the win but if I am a Utah or TCU fan, I am
licking my chops.Hall still gets rattled with pressure which leads
to horrible decisions and interceptions.
This team tonight made me a believer. In years past BYU would have lost a game
like that, a game the managed so well the whole evening. Lets party
Provo Style against the next big test.I thought Bobby B said he
would play in Provo?
That was a very different BYU out there tonight. I like it. Now remember, when
you play steel the flag you are now the one holding the prize and the target is
on your back. Don't let it bite you. Take every game seriously. You have to
prepare for every game like you did for this one. Go Cougars and Go MWC.
I live in Big 12 country, and man am I glad BYU won. I'm a die hard Ute fan and
always will be. BYU did what they had to. What else does this conference have
to do to get respect? Wyoming beat Tennessee (granted it was a bad Tennessee
team), Utah beat Alabama, BYU beat Oklahoma, the whole MWC beat up the Pac 10
last year. How can they still keep the MWC out of the NC game? I hope BYU can
beat FSU when they play, and if TCU can win on their East Coast swing and Utah
beat Oregon, how can the BCS say this conference isn't for real?
I am really happy for this win!But I am not gonna lie, I was
watching the USMNT game at Rio Tinto more closely than this game. Sorry BYU, I
promise next game I will be more hooked up, but tonight it was all USMNT!
Great victory Cougs! I don't want to look past Tulane and FSU or any of he great
games BYU has this year. Fantastic start to the season. BYU VS. UTAH
Congratulations to the Cougars! Way to represent the conference! Bronco is all
class. What a great time to be a football fan in Utah. Go Utes!
Someone, Please find a Kicker for BYU. Payne almost cost us the game. There has
got to be someone walking around the BYU campus who can kick it out of the
YEAH GO COUGARS!!! That was one of the most exciting games ever, wasn't it?!
doesn't quite hold a candle to a thursday night win over utah state.
Congrats Cougs! Way to represent the MWC! Gonna be a tight race this year.
*Bradford got hurt**Clawson hurt Bradfordnuff said
1st and goal from the 2, on a very iffy pass interference call (that ESPN
announcers said "that looked pretty clean") and BYU held them to a field goal.
Great goal line stand. Way to go Defense!!!
It doesn't matter if you are a Utah fan tonight. BYU delivered
another huge blow on the farce called the BCS and won a big one for the MWC.
Good job Cougars!
I was excited to learn that BYU beat Oklahoma. I follow both the Utes and
Cougars since I have degrees from both schools. What I don't understand is why
some people say they "hate" the other school. That's very strong language and
really immature. Isn't it possible to be a fan of one school and still like and
respect their arch rival? Grow up.
Bradford played the 1st half and the score was 10-7, only because of BYU's
mistakes. It's impossible to say what would have happened, but to say OU would
have won for sure is incorrect. Great defense all day by the Cougars
great job DEFENSE!!!you won the game for us on that goalline stand.. go
Die Hard Ute Fan here, Way to go BYU, Front runners for the MWC and deserve it.
You make us proud!! Go undefeated and BUST that snobby BCS!
Ha ha. I guess you should be clued in to the fact that BYU had 2 of its best
players out- Unga and Baumann, not to mention the entire O line. So ya, there
should be an asterisk.
What a marvelous game plan and execution by the Cougars
...Way to ruin it for all of the classy Ute statements. Way to go, pal.By
the way, you've completely contradicted yourself. If the U was a traditional
power, then we've had numerous great wins since, no?Chew on that one for a
bit....while you're at it, be sure to catch Sportscenter. You see, we just beat
Oklahoma. On the road.
YES! Finaly a notable win!!!!! Congrats guys and coaches way to go!
Way to go 'Cougs!I have to salute the Ute fans - most by far have
been very gracious. Even my Ute season ticket holder neighbor was excited for
the BYU win.Between how well TCU played Oklahoma last year, how the
Utes pounded Alabama in their second BCS bowl game, and this win, we are gaining
ground as a conference. Let's show the world the MWC deserves an
automatic BCS berth EVERY year!GO COUGS!
Today is a stellar day for the conference. As a long time BYU fan its about time
we held up our end of the bargain. Utah has brought credibility the past few
years with some great wins. And by the way, as a BYU fan I did have a sugar bowl
party last year with my other BYU friends and we all cheered for Utah. Once we
play Utah later it will all get partison as it should and I will bleed Blue. But during the non-conference schedule its about the conference.
Thanks ute fans for acknowledging the win. Classy. This was a huge
game. I was hoping to stay close, but not expecting a win. Fantastic. Defense
was outstanding and offense did just enough to win. I hope to see some
improvement on offense, especially with a senior QB.I know the team
won't be talking BCS, so let's us fans not do it either, eh? There is a LOT of
football still to play.
Congrats cougars! I am a huge utah fan and was cheering like crazy for the
cougars tonight. You guys gave a ton of credibility to the MWC! I can't wait
for the game in November. Go UTES!
You are so wrong, even with bradford in the game, the outcome would
have been the same. Bradford wasn't moving the ball against the Y's defense
Congrats.....well done..... no one thought you could do
First of all, thanks to the Ute fans who (mostly) have shown real class in your
comments.Despite the fact that BYU gave OU their ONLY touchdown on
the Jacobson muffed punt, Bradford played virtually all of the first half. For
a team that averaged 51 points per game last year, the halftime score was more a
reflection of BYU's defense than anything else. There will be many
talking heads and bloggers who will say that BYU won because Bradford was hurt,
but let's not forget that OU only "earned" three points in the first half with
Bradford in all the way - which is exactly the same number of points they scored
with their back-up in the second half.BYU now needs to focus on
Tulane and FSU. Win those two and the season should indeed be outstanding.
with hard work, great play and a little luck! No matter what the Anonymous Ute
fans say, a WIN for BYU against the #3 team in the nation is a shocker! Who
cares about the point margin because at the end of the day....WE
STILL WON!Please don't get on the boards and post all of your sour
attempts to minimize BYU's huge accomplishment. This wint really does
help the entire MWC and gives credibility to all of the midmajor conference's
efforts to expose the BCS and fight our way into the club that we have been
excluded from for too long because we as a group haven't been thought of as good
enough to play with the major conferences. We are good enough. The
Utes destroyed Alabama in the Sugar Bowl, and BYU beat Oklahoma in our season
opener. That is two wins for the MWC over top ten programs from arguably the
two toughest conferences in football in a row! How does putting down BYU at
this moment do anything but expose you as nothing more than a Y hater? You
don't even like the Utes, you just hate BYU!
BYU won, it doesnt matter who did or did not play the game. BYU is the potential
BCS buster this year! GO COUGARS!
Congrats BYU! Lets bring down the BCS together!!! Way to represent the
Congrats Cougars. Great win. In regards to the article, I believe Miami was
ranked number 1 when they lost to BYU in 1990, so they would be the highest
ranked opponent BYU has beat.
Does this mean we can sing "Rise and Shout" to open Relief Society, tomorrow?Cougs comin' to New Orleans on Saturday! Woo Hoo!!
Thank Goodness for the Defense - enough said Great Job
I couldn't get tickets to the game thanks to all the OU fans buying them up, but
it was still sooooooo satisfying to see the BIG WIN on primetime ESPN.Way to go, Cougars!!!
Of course Oklahoma and the BCS boys will say BYU won because Bradford got hurt.
And just 1 point, well, that doesn't mean anything.Great win for
BYU. Have to admit I gave BYU a .000001% chance of victory (and I'm a Cougar fan
and alum). I figured the score would be something like 60-21. Kudos
to the team. You could tell they were tight and nervous by all the TO's.
Uncharacteristically, so was Oklahoma. Must have been the awe from playing in
that fancy new stadium. What a way to christen it!Go BYU, Go Utes,
Go Boise State. I'm cheering for all potential BCS busters. Bring this corrupt
system to it's knees!
Congrats to the team, to Bronco, and to his assistants coaches. HUGE win.
It is gald to see that what ever team you cheer for, be it a Ute or Cougar fan
we are all happy for this victory. I cheer for any Utah college until they play
BYU. What a great day for the MWC and for the schools in Utah. Take it to the
BCS both Utah and BYU. Good Luck to all the Utah colleges.
Way to Go Y!!Grats! D looked GREAT!
As a Utah fan I want to congratulate BYU for a solid win against Oklahoma.
Similar to Utah's win against Alabama earlier this year, BYU came out and put OK
in their place. Here's to hoping BYU can focus on the next task at
hand and not think about BCS glory like BSU fans are talking about already. It
makes the matchups against TCU and Utah that much more compelling when everyone
is ranked. Thank you, BYU, for finally pulling your weight when facing ranked
non-conference opponents. Job Well Done.
Its a lot easier when you can game plan for a missing running back than when you
lose a Heisman Trophy winning QB.
Great win cougars! Classy Ute fan comments. Thank you! Onward and upward
Stun Oklahoma? Hardly. That's what I call a hollow victory.
Rise and shout! I can see it already. Colby Clawson posterizing Sam Bradford
draped all over LaVell Edwards Stadium. I only wish it could/would happen.
Lloyds of London going to loose their shorts with Bradford setback/injury. Max
Hall immortalized. Dennis Pitta NFL written all over him. Biggest win since
Detmer beating Miami.Sooner Scooner needs repairing.Love
If you would have told me before the game that the Cougs would be without the
services of Harvey Unga, Max hall would throw 2 int's, (4 turnovers in all), and
they would have only had 27 yards rushing for the game, I would have said the 22
points BYU was scheduled to lose by would have only been a percentage of the
actual points they would have been crushed by. And yet they persevered, their
defense played like a group possessed, and Max Hall finally found his rhythm as
the impossible happened, perhaps even more impressive than the Miami game (was
in OU's back yard). Shove that into your BCS pipe and smoke it!!
I am neither a BYU or Utah fan, but since I live here, I root for the MWC and
always cheer for the BCS (in its present state) to crumble. I have to say kudos
to the Ute fans on this message board that are being classy, and congratulating
the Y. And of course, huge kudos to BYU for winning an incredible game, and
pulling off the huge upset!
Take away Max Hall and Dennis Pitta and the Utah State Aggies could beat BYU.
Same thing goes when OU loses Bradford and Gresham. Asterisk Game!
Great win, fun to watch. But geez, we didn't win the National Championship.
Long way to go still, but it's fun to start the season with some energy and
finally a respectable win. BTW, I used to think that the words "classy ute" is
an oxymoron, but they're all over the place. Hopefully the Cougs and the Utes
do something this year so that this night doesn't end up being worthless.
RIGHT! Don't get wrapped up in something that we have little incremental
influence on. But if the Y wins each week (or a vast majority) and Utah does
too then the BCS will take care of itself over time. Excellence will throw the
wrench in the BCS. One game focus! Who does the U have that they can woop up
on? I hope whoever it is they do their part and I will cheer for them as they
have done tonight. It is 5:02am her in Africa so i am going to bed. Tha is how
much I love the Y!!!!
Since the 80's and 90's. HUGE win and great start for the program this year.
CONGRATS and GO COOGS!!!
Oh My Goodness! This was a fun one to watch, especially when we won. To the guy
trying to find the asterix, When Bradford left the game, he had thrown for 96
yards and at that point (end of the first half) Hall had thrown for over 220
yards. Tell me again how OK lost because Bradford went out injured. I don't
Don't get to excited Cougars, that was a sloppy game on both sides and Boise
beat Oregon. I don't think they will put BYU ahead of Boise in the polls.
Go cougars all the way show them
Huge win for byu, mwc and state of utah. Be classy fans, don't talk about the 3
alphabetical letters, please, one game. Just keep getting better. But Max Hall
going 9-10 in gw drive puts him in the class of bigtime QBs.
this win not only represent the Y, but the State and the Conference. All
rivalries should be placed on hold when all the MWC teams play nonconference
games. One game at a time!!!! Congrats.
>you could have two non-BCS teams playing for the national championship. No. It would be two non-BCS teams playing for the BCS championship.
There is no national championship in D-I college football.
Hey cougs first real win since 1984. Hope to see the "real" ybu team against
Tulane. Utah State looked better then Oklahoma. Good luck against FSU, TCU, and
the traditional power the U.
As a Boise State fan I know I should have been rooting for BYU to lose but I
couldn't help but be thrilled to see the Cougars beat the Sooners. Congrats on a
great win and a huge achievement for your football program and the MWC.
Hey, listen - I may be a big-time Utah fan, but even I can appreciate that win.
Seriously - hats off to BYU. That is a BIG game to win, both for BYU and the
MWC. If I could cheer my head off last year when the Utes beat Alabama, I can
cheer for BYU now. Congrats, BYU fans.
I had it picked 55-14 for OU. Fun to be that wrong. The MWC is going to be fun
to watch this year. Congrats Cougs.
All we heard about all summer is how great Utah's defense is and how bad BYU's
defense is. Let compare.Utah's defense gave up 17 to
Utah StBYU's defense gave up 14 to OU, which avg over 50 last year.
What a win! Bit loose with the flAGS, but that is early season jitters that were
Why did it take so long for hallto throw to pitta? For a minute there
I'd swearNorm Chow was back calling plays.Max still looked
shaky at times. If Bradford didn't go out this game would'vehad a
different outcome. Sorry.
Utah fan here - CONGRATS TDS !!Defense, Defense, Defense. Good job
and this will be quite a year in the MWC,I didnt think the blue
defense could do it. Now lets root for TCU on the road at Virginia and Clemson.
Thanks for the class you have shown today and back at you for paving the way in
04 and 08. Great conference with BYU, UT, and TCU. We can hang our hats on
quality football. It is nice to see everyone red and blue coming together. Now
go get the Ducks.
>do you know where I can find an asterisk? Yes, right next to the
place where it says that BYU beat Oklahoma without BYU's star running back
playing at all, and without their defensive captain for most of the game, and
with 2nd and 3rd sting offensive linemen. And that even with OU's Heisman Trophy
winner in the game, OU couldn't do anything against BYU's defense.
I can't believe I'm saying this, but I guess every 19 years or so I find myself
rooting for the hated rival. I did it first in 1990 for the Miami game, and I
was cheering my heart out tonight. Go Cougs - thanks for making a statement on
national TV against a great team. All the press will focus on Bradford being
lost but it was BYU's stellar defense that won this game, coupled with Max Hall
finally pulling off a big game. Kudos to BYU. As much as it hurts to say it, I
hope they go undefeated and get to the BCS. Would be nice to have a 4th BCS
buster from the West.
Way to go Cougars!!!! You did it! The BCS needs to pay attention to the MWC.
Get a clue BCS!!!!
What a win! Bit loose with the flgas, but taht is early season jitters that were
Lucky QB went down but glad to see MWC stick it to another over rated BCS
school. You wont beat the Utes but great win in TX
You know, as a credit to DN, they posted an article about the weakness of the OU
O-line. I poo-poo'ed it as many of the readers did (both Y fans and non-Y fans)
based on the responses.Boy was that spot on. BYU's harrassment of
the OU QB's, the way the stopped the run, the impressive goal line stand and the
critical stop at the end of the game showed that was perhaps the difference in
GREAT WIN COUGS! Can I say anything more? Sloppy at times but great defense.
Wait before you start chanting BCS though. You still have to play Florida State,
TCU and Utah. Lets hope that both teams are undefeated at the end of the year.
Yeah Cougars!!!! Way to go!
Way to go Gougs, Now UTAH an TCU, win your big games and lets let the BCS know
that the MWC belongs in the BCS! Everyone cheer for the MWC, until Nov, then
Good job BYU. I think I am a cougar fan now!
Wow! What a game. A few mistakes, a few missed opportunities but in the end you
pulled it out!Congratulations on a huge WIN!
Can't believe it. Don't talk BCS. Just win next week.
The Cougs look like a new team this year!! Watch out Mountain West!
Cougs,I hate you with a passion, but I couldn't be more pleased with
your victory. Almost threw my remote through my window on one of Max's
interceptions . . . something I ordinarily would laugh at! You've finally owned
up to some credibility in our conference. Now it's time for TCU, UNLV, Air
Force, Colorado State, and of course, the MIGHTY UTES to continue the streak.
Let's get those criminals any way we can . . . by winning all the big game!Go Utes! Go MWC!
From a Ute fan, I have to say... Way to go!!!!BYU just put
themselves into the drivers seat to be this years BCS buster, and hopefully
further ram the injustice of the BCS system down the major conferences throats.
Cougars deserve a top 10 ranking by tomorrow, and it should just go upward from
there.I'll gladly swallow a loss to the Y if it means that BYU has a
stab at a national championship. And if they can go undefeated, taking down
Oklahoma, Florida St., Utah, Air Force, and TCU, they ought to get a shot.Granted, that's a challenge, but BYU proved they can handle a challenge.
Great job BYU - defense was tough! The new O-Line did a great job giving Max
time against the hyped-up Sooner defensive line. With the Cougs, Utes and
Horned Frogs showing they deserve to be ranked, we make the BCS mafia have to
take notice - go MWC!
Well done, Cougars...well done. Feels great, doesn't it. Now you understand
how we felt after the Sugar Bowl last year and why we talk about it. Mendenhall was pure class in his remarks to the media after the game. He's
right...this is a continuation of the MWC's march forward. Thank
you again and well done!!!
I love to hate ybu, but that was gutsy and fun to watch. This should go a long
way in getting the MWC some respect. Well done cougars, hats off to you.
Good job BYU. I thought it would be a rout, but your team played well and
played a great game.
Most of you guys have acted with class today. Let's hope both of our teams take
care of TCU. May the best team win (oh yeah there are other games than U-Y).
Please let me know where and when that Ute fan is going to "eat my own boots" if
BYU should win this game. I will bring the syrup, catsup, frosting whatever to
help it easier to swallow. For your sake I hope your boots are close to new.
From a Ute fan...CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
All I read are comments from Ute Fans, which have all been classy and
commendable!!! WooHoo BYU, but where are your fans?
One point is hardly being stunned. Lucky might be a better word. Take any win
that comes your way.
Congratulations to the Cougars, the state of Utah, and the MWC! A stunning
victory in the heart of Texas' football country! To Doug Robinson: Whhhhhy were
you such a doubter?
Way to go utes and cougars !!!!! Great for mwc bad for BCS
anonymous wrote:One last thought: poor Boise State. They were front
runners for BCS, now it's BYU. the possible irony is even greater.
Boise State and BYU have both won their most difficult games. Now some big
ifs:IF they both run the table, andIF voters and computers allow
it,you could have two non-BCS teams playing for the national championship.
Go Cougars!! What a fun game to watch!
of course OU can be beat. anybody can be beat. especially when they're playing
a solid team like BYU. Keep up the good work, cougars :)
Great game Cougs!!! I never thought they would win this game. Glad I was
wrong. Now, we can hope that Oklahoma wins out. Remember the BYU
national championship year started this way (beating a top-5 team that really
wasn't very good).
Max Hall of last year tries to squeeze that ball through 4 defenders to Pitta,
Max Hall of this year waits a second longer and finds the open man. Oklahomas
defense full of "All-Americans" gives up 356 yards to BYU while BYU's defense
full of "slow white mormons" gives up 256, I love it, even with Bradford in for
the 2nd half the results would have been the same.
And Jonny Harline is STILL open!!!
GO COUGARS! Knew you could do it! Tom Holmoe looks like a genius now. Rough
game, lots of mistakes, but luckily on both sides. Great win! Hey,
Utes--we want you undefeated again on Nov. 28. Us, too. Makes the conference
look good, and it'll make it so much more meaningful when we win. Good luck!
I'm a Utah man, so now I'm congratulating BYU and will be cheering them on until
we meet in Provo!
All I can say is WOW, WOW, WOW..... Congrats!
The MWC deserves respect now more than ever.
It's a shame that the only derogatory comment on the board so far has come from
you. Stop yelling! If you are a Ute troll then I'm ashamed, if you truly are a
cougar fan, please realize that this type of comment is what keeps several Ute
fans from ever wanting to cheer for the Y. Congrats, cougars on a great win and
bringing even more respect to the MWC.
WE Happy untalented few!!!!
Go Cougs! We will be the Utes and TCU!
Kudos BYU. I didn't think we could pull this off, thank you for proving me
wrong. Way to go defense, you kept us in this game.
I am no Cougar fan, but congrats on a big win. Well done for both yourselves
and the MWC.
What can you say. Now, where will they rank OU and where will they rank BYU?
Doug Robinson. Who's crazy now?
Good job BYU.
Down with the BCS! Way to start the season and the new stadium off with a bang,
GREAT game byu that was amazing, it awesome to see the mwc get some respect, now
my utes and tcu need to win there non confrence games against the bcs schools to
stick it to the bcs.go cougars!go mwc!!GO
UTAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!DOWN WITH THE
Congratulations BYU. This is from a Utah fan who had no faith in you at all and
dislikes your team. WELL DONE!! I will swallow my pride and say that this day is
yours. Shocking victory thats good for the conference and Hall and Bronco's
signature win. Now go win the rest of your OOC games!
Tomorrow's headline has to read "Oh, My Gosh!"
but do you know where I can find an asterisk?
Way to go Ute fans. As a die-hard Cougar fan, it's nice to see some of you step
up to the plate and acknowledge an incredible victory, just as I did when you
downed Alabama.I expect many, many more Utah fans to step up to the plate
and acknowledge the victory, and sufficiently eat crow. For all of you who
said they were, "tired of only TCU and Utah representing the MWC", you need to
come on here, post your name, and eat crow.
Cougar Win! 14:13!
>Obviously OU had has more talentIf they did, they left it somewhere
before they walked onto the field, because they sure didn't look like the more
talented team, in either half.
I am a Utah Man. I DESPISE the Cougars. But I hate Oklahoma possibly more. I get
so sick of everyone kissing their rear end every year just because they're
Oklahoma.Congrats, Cougies.Go MWC!
Who was it that said that it was crazy for BYU to open against OU?I
hope to see an "I was wrong" article!
From a die hard Ute fan. Congrats Cougs! Way to represent and stick it to the
BCS. See you in November!
I CALLED IT THE WHOLE WEEK. AND ALL I HAVE TO SAY IS YEWT FANS CAN PUT THEIR
FOOT ALL THE WAY DOWN THEIR THROAT. BUT IM SURE YOU CLASSY(SARCASTIC) YEWT FANS
CAN FIND SOME WAY TO BELITTLE THE GIANT SLAYERS. GO COUGARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
... gracious Ute fans! I hope both BYU and Utah win all their games up to the
final conference game in November, and then we will see who goes to the BCS bowl
after that match. May the best team win!
Wow, I am a die hard Ute fan and have cheered for the cougs plenty a time and
have been let down too many times. Thank you for finally shutting everyone up
about how you can't win the big one. I am pumped for mwc football for the first
time in a long time. Once again from a HUGE Ute fan. Well done and much respect.
this makes me happy. i expect to hear excuses on ESPN about bradford but a win
is a win. im just hoping max got throwing to red jerseys out of his system for
the season... love the guy, just not when he throws to red jerseys
this appears to be the first solid BYU team in... well, forever.
Congrats BYU. Hard fought win and deserved all the way. For a minute, I thought
OU was gonna get a field goal in at the end and walk away very lucky---but I was
wrong again, as I was wrong that BYU would lose this game. Quality win guys.
well shut my mouth, and i will after saying that crow tastes much better without
the feathers, and isn't nice that byu finally lives up to the rest of the mwc
by winning a big out of conference game. even max couldn't lose it tonight,
although he tried... good work cougars.
Ok, I take back what I said, I'm a beleiver now! Good job Cougars!
Way to go Cougars!!!!
jahooooo byu u pulled it off way to go "D" won this game hands down no BSC for
OU but for BYU a great chance at a bid on a BSC game well done well done
There's a Ute out there who owes 5,000 to BYU's cougar club and there's a whole
army of us who are going to come calling.
Classy interview with Bronco at the end. I love how cool he was. Like it was no
Talk for themselves...Go Cougars, go MWC... BCS, die with grace!
I am impressed with the Cougars. They played over their heads. Obviously OU had
has more talent, but the heart was blue today. And it was hard fought the whole
way. Go Cougars.
It's great Jacobson scored the winning TD. Way to stick in there after the first
Awesome game cougars. The only bad thing is now I have to pay more for my FSU
tickets. Also a ute fan and I don't want to hear anything but
congratulations from U fans. One last thought: poor Boise State.
They were front runners for BCS, now it's BYU.
come on Y fans. Your team is playing awesome. Let's get some support
BYU looks good, much better than expected. OU is missing Bradford and Gresham,
think BYU missing Hall and Pitta, but the D has looked good regardless.
I bleed as red as anybody out there, but with 3 minutes to go and no matter how
it ends, I say kudos to BYU. You've done the MWC proud. And who'd have thought
these three words could be used together: "solid BYU defense"!
Wow. BYU keep it up. 3 minutes to go...
I have been rooting for BYU also...But, I did think it was funny to
see Max Hall telling everyone that they are gonna win while running into the
locker room at halftime...then he comes out and forces throws that get picked
off...However, I don't think OU will be able to do much on
offense...If BYU can keep them out of good field position, then it could be one
play to win the game...As I am typing this, BYU stopped them down at
the goal line on like 7 plays (3rd and goal they were called for a pass
interference that was a pretty bad call actually)...then stopped them 3 more
times to force a field goal...OU is pretty predictable without Sam
Bradford...but its still a one score game at 13-7...BYU could do this...
Nice job cougs! Between the Alabama win, and this we shoukd have a bcs automatic
bid in no time.
Awesome stop on defense. Everyone in the state should be cheering on BYU. Way to
IN the first two series of the second half, Hall looked like he did against TCU
and Utah: fumbled snap, missed two wide open receivers, took a sack. Two series
one completion.He better get better.
Maxie! Stop throwing the ball to the red jerseys. You did that enough last
Utah fan here...WAY TO GO BYU!!! To: S2; You love to be hated,
don't you - persecution syndrome. To the first class BYU fans, this
is doable. Hang in there. You are showing the nation how good MWC football
BYU LETS WIN THIS GAME, NOW THAT OU QB Sam Bradford, HURT AND OUT PUT A STOMP ON
THE HOPES OF OU RETURN TO THE BIG DANCE AND ADD A GREAT CHANGE TO GET TO GO. PS
TAKE CARE OF THAT BALL IF YOU REALLY WANT TO WIN THIS
Hmmm, where are the Y-haters and their 56-0 predictions?Good work,
Defense. Keep your heads and cut out the costly penalties.
BYU down 10-7, Sam Bradford injured. It's not fun to see an injury affect the
game but BYU is looking pretty good overall. A field goal early in the game was
taken away by a penalty and then a miss. A fumble by BYU on the 1 yard line but
then a fumble by OU later led to BYU's score.GO COUGARS!!
Great work BYU, you should be up by at least a TD. Max looks good. Keep up the
good work. Amazing defense
Unga is critical on 3rd and shorts....too bad.
Why in the heck did we try to stuff it up the middle on 3rd and one??????? Punt
to OU down on the 1-yard line, though.I tell ya, OU CAN be beat!
Even with Unga out and a new Oline we're moving the ball pretty well.
HUGE first down to Andrew Geroge.OU CAN BE BE BEAT!!!
