Mapleton's SNAFU | 3:54 p.m. Sept. 3, 2009
As a resident of this community I'm impressed how many mistakes have been made by some well meaning individuals and by a number that I'm more than convinced are corrupt. This is a very pleasant place to live in spite of it all and Wendell Gibby's arrogance is quite impressively awful. This is just a microcosm of how little people feel they can do to bring logic into the equation. Well, the pawns are eventually going to unite and we'll see how many King Gibby and Queen Brady's fall. I'd like to see them all go straight to H-E-Double Toothpicks. Oh, and by the way, can we get Maple Street beautified a bit. Take out the utility poles and get us some nice sidewalks. For heaven sakes.

Let's hope that cities aren't reduced to pushing every single zoning change to a popular vote, we'll never get anything done. This is why I elect people to office, so they can make the best choices for my city. If I wanted to be involved in every single change at the city level then I'd run for office.

This whole thing is ridiculous. I'm glad I don't live in Mapleton.
Rezoning | 5:31 a.m. Sept. 4, 2009
Rezoning property that affects everyone is everyones right to object or approve. The developer is not the only one losing here, it involves all the people living below this hill and the disruption of watershed protecting the valley below. Not to mention the losses home buyers would encounter when their house slides down the hill. If the USGS has designated this property as high risk for development then it should not be rezoned for greed by the city or the developer. The developer bought the property at risk and should not be allowed to put others at risk or in harms way. So many homeowners have already been put in harms way in Utah that it must come to an end. Responsible development must be maintained by cities and developers. Stop letting greed and taxes be the decision makers in government.

I'm dismayed to see this controversy portrayed as the bad old city and a few rich neighbors ganging up on a private citizen who only wants to exercise his good old American right to do anything he pleases with his own property. The notion that if you have enough money to buy lawyers and politicians to force your intentions on everyone else in a small community and that this is somehow quintessentially "American" is a simplistic, childish view of how America works. The idea that the rest of us should just shut up because Gibby "paid money" for his land reveals a level of ignorance about America and freedom that is appalling. As a long term resident -- not a rich neighbor of Gibby or a someone on the town council. I and a clear majority of town residents are sick about what Gibby has already done and plans to do. We have every right to use all legal means to oppose these mindless property owners/developers who are strip mining the beauty of our state. Let the Gibby's have their way and some day Utah's motto will be "Welcome to Utah - World's Largest Gravel Pit!

As a resident of Mapleton for over 60 years, I have watched recently in utter dismay as beautiful Maple Mountain has been scarred and defaced. It has for my entire life stood as a silent sentinel and symbol of protection not to mention a magnificent example of God's handiwork. Now,who can protect it from the ravaging of one very wealthy individual who seeks further wealth through the desecration of this great mountain? It is apparent that the people of Mapleton have no voice in the matter.

I and a large majority of town's people are really tired and sick of all this tax payer's money being used to stop someone that has bought and paid for this property,," HE OWN'S THIS LAND " leave him alone, we have had several interested families interested in purchasing these lots once developed to build there home.this development is no differant that what has already been happening from Nephi to Brigham along the Wasatch front..look at the building in these area's on the bench... you people act as if he is going to climb the mountain with equipment and scare it from the top to the base NOT TRUE ,, just the tax base alone would be a positive to the community.. there has already been several very high end home builder's / developer's that have shown interest's in this area and lot's once the subdivision has been built,so that they could purchase these lots to build there home's,Also in this very unstable economy this development would put alot of people back to work,This is his property, Not the friends of maplemountain. What arrogance on there part!!!
