Question | 2:05 a.m. Sept. 2, 2009
This is, as usual, a wonderfully thoughtful article.

I have one question, though. You say, "If you're a Mormon who doesn't believe in prophets, seers and revelators, why would you fret about it?"

That's very interesting, because I thought that the very definition of a Mormon is someone who believes in certain prophets. Can you call yourself a Mormon and not believe in Joseph Smith? If so, I would consider joining.

Not only questioning the wisdom of jogging in "underware", but being unable to go anywhere there are women today without being confronted by cleavage.

Brigham would surely echo the words of Terry Thomas:

"And this infantile preoccupation with bosoms. In all my time in this godforsaken country, the one thing that has appalled me most of all is this preposterous preoccupation with bosoms. Don't you realize they have become the dominant theme in American culture: in literature, advertising and all fields of entertainment. I'll wager you anything you like that if American women stopped wearing brassieres, your whole national economy would collapse overnight."

I think Brigham Young would be more upset to see how church doctrine has changed. Not sure even he would "keep the faith" given what it is (and is not0 today.

I always miss Elder Maxwell as the seasons change - perhaps because that is when he was at his best (Spring - April Conference and Fall - October) And always in the midst of that changing of the season he delivered his powerful, life-changing messages of the unchangable path to true Discipleship....

Faith in Christ and his Atonement, repentance, baptism, receive the gift of the Holy Ghost, endure to the end, partake of the Sacrament to renew covenants with God ...

Those haven't changed, and they're the core.

I was born LDS. I have "faith" in Jesus. I'm not sure what that really means to most people. I don't believe Jesus was the Son of God because I don't believe in the kind of god most LDS believe in. I "repent" all the time. I change my ways, try my best to fix errors and mistakes, and improve to be the best I can be. I was baptized because what 8 year old wants to do anything but please mommy and daddy, so you go for a little swim. I was given "the gift of the Holy Ghost", but I don't believe in ghosts anymore, and I certainly can't make sense of a "holy" ghost that is supposed to help me in tough situations, but who leaves me if I sin or make a mistake. What good is such a fair-weather "companion"?

So, according to the CORE of LDS doctrine, I qualify as a Latter-day Saint!

Can you imagine that? An atheist Mormon?

I think it's cool that we live in a country where a person is free to be an atheist Mormon.
