byu and its fans both have a major test ahead with the first game. we may not win but we need to show up and give not only byu a good showing but to give the mtn west a good showing. everyone is crying for respect and now here is the chance to gain it!!!!! this year byu and the mtn west have their BCS game but this year we dont have to win out to get it. One thing i know for sure is that we are arent going down to just stay with OU but to win and i know that cougar nation and the team is for sure up to the task. lets go cougars!!!! its our time now!!!
Besides the fact that OU will try to prove they are the nation's # 1 team and that Sam Bradford deserves to be the Heisman Trophy winner, they want to make sure the MWC doesn't bite them like what happened to Alabama and Michigan.
Plus, the oft injured Cougars will probably make for easy pickens. Not to mention that the field (artificial turf) and fans will be largely supportive for OU.
One more thing: the weather will a significant factor. The humidity will be a big drain on any team conditioned to high mountain air.
Can you say "duh?"
Be careful with that slipping slide thing. We don't need more injured players than we already have.
Entire O line is out, starting corner out (vs. Heisman QB), plus BYU's historic jitters vs. anyone ranked outside of LES, etc. I'm a 40+ year fan but know my Cougars well. This will be shaky start (OU, FSU, TCU in the first month) but we will recover in the second half with key games all in our home stadium. I have long ago gotten used to the idea that we are a very good mid-major program that sometimes beats the big names, but most often struggles to play at a high level when big competition comes calling.
The real question is whether the Cougars will be a test for Oklahoma.
Over the years, I have asked many Oklahoma and Texas fans if they thought playing their annual game in the Cotton Bowl was a neutral field, or if Texas had home field advantage. I have yet to find a fan of either school who thinks either school has an advantage in Dallas. First, Dallas is about an equal distance between the schools. Second, so many of Oklahoma's players come from the Dallas area that the Cotton Bowl is a second home for them. Nobody should kid themselves about this being a neutral field for Oklahoma.
That said, this Utah fan really wants the Cougars to be a huge test for the Sooners and it would look great for the conference and the state if you could come away with a win or at least a respectable performance.
That about sums up all you posters to this point.
and I don't want to see the MWC get wasted by OU. I hope BYU gives OU a run for their money.
Sounds like BYU has no chance in this game. To many key players out to have a real good shot at winning. I like Hall for the most part but he does have a problem with bigger than normal games. Better to loose now than later! BYU will have a great season!
To edt: The weather better not be a factor in this game. If it is too hot(very likely) they will keep the roof on the stadium and turn on the air conditioning. Besides, North Texas is not all that humid. Wait until the Cougars go to New Orleans the following week. There they will see humidity.
We in Texas have paid too much in taxes for this new stadium and high ticket prices for this game for it not to be comfortable.
Few comments:
More appropriate title could have been, BYU poses easy popquiz to Oklahoma. Saying it is a tough test the other way around shows just how naive we are!
Second, to Brother Max Hall. You got spanked by the No. 2 team in the country last year (many people thought No, 1), I'm not so sure Oklahoma is the best team you are going to face. Pass with precision please.
OU and their fans have already looked WAY past BYU (actually they don't even know who BYU is...or care)and have their heads in the National Championship game already so now's the time to kick some unsuspecting, smug Sooner BEhind. Just go have fun boys.
Nothing to loss and every thing to gain!
What an understatement!!!
More like a...whipping...
Get ready Cougars...bend over and be spanked by OK
this won't even be close, byu is worse then last year, where they lost to a crummy arizona team, and ou is out to win it all. 62-15 if the y is lucky.
"Nobody should kid themselves about this being a neutral field for Oklahoma."
You are correct that Dallas is a virtual 2nd home for the Sooners. But...
There are also a lot of members of the church in the Dallas, TX area. I know. I'm from there. BYU fans snapped up all their allotted tix in no time. I would expect more cougar fans in Dallas than yoot fans in New Orleans. BYU will surprise everybody by dominating the Sooners more handily than the yoots played Alabama. This is a bigger game than the Sugar Bowl because the whole nation will be watching.
You yoot fans are just jealous that Oklahoma wanted to play a REAL team with REAL national cachet. Nobody remembers who the yoots are anymore anyway. Have fun wallowing in mediocrity for the next 4 yrs. Try not to embarrass the conference against San Jose St. You've already embarrassed us enough just by scheduling them.
GO "2009 BCS Busting" COUGARRRRRRS!!!!!!!!!
I LOVE my Cougars but have to be realistic. I'm afraid BYU will not only lose to OU but it will be a BAD UGLY loss. OU is just too powerfull on both side of the ball and between graduation and injuries, BYU has lost too much to hang with them.
To the BYU football team: PLEASE PROVE ME WRONG!! Use this a bulletin board material if you have to.
The 2008 Utes were toughest team Max Hall will have faced (undefeated, finished season ranked no. 2). Oklahoma will lose at least 2 games and will not win their conference.
Every MWC coach and many players realize that the Utes were 10-2 last year. A few extrememly helpful calls from the refs and a kicker who couldn't make two "chip shots" to ice the game. Who knows, if Max Hall had only thrown six interceptions last year, or the coaches would have decided to run the ball, they Utes could have been 9-3.
Yeah, Max Hall said it and the coaches voted last year and none picked Utah for #1. Only Ute fans believe they were great last year.
Here's a quote from the Norman [Oklahoma] Transcript:
Early in the preseason tight end Jermaine Gresham was being peppered with questions about the annual showdown with Texas. He was asked another about the rise of Oklahoma State. Facing Miami was also brought up.
“I know BYU is Sept. 5. I know the day of it. No other team but them has been on my mind,” he said. “I’m already gameplanning for them. We don’t overlook anyone.”
It doesn't sound like they're looking past us to me. Go BYU!
