I Love DI :)

What is the ROI on this project? We cannot just continue to spend. Where is all this money coming from?

Anonymous

Deseret Industries is Self-Sustaining financially; as for ROI, it's main focus isn't retail sales. Their main goal is Vocational Rehabilitation and helping to better the community by making people independent and self sustaining themselves.

John

The ROI cannot be measured in finical terms. You must consider the value that it brings to the community through affordable personal needs as well as the vocational training. The DI has provided a resource for goods to be recycled and deposited back into our community through the good works of kind hearted people. God bless everyone that is involved!

Different clientelle?

Let's see:
Central Ogden full of poor ethnic people and the homeless.
New location: in the suburbs.

I guess I won't feel guilty buying things from the DI anymore (even though we make MASSIVE donations to them) when they are moving away from their core clientelle.

I guess this is part of Ogden's "High Adventure" scheme: move the "embarrassing" things out of downtown.

Good location

It's right across from the liquor store.

@ Different clientelle?

Maybe just hard times coming to a new area and new clientelle....

DI is an inspiration. That's where I learned about flannel shirts and corduroy pants.

Ogden

I guess the DI was not the right fit for the new inner city Ogden, just ask the mayor. Lets move the poor out of Ogden. How sad to see a place where it is needed the most move out and is harder for those that need thoses services the most alway from them. I hope the bus runs to Harrisville. That is as far north as you can almost get in Weber County.

Ever give to the DI....

...and never see your stuff come up for sale?

First, they don't want artificial Christmas trees. No matter that yours is carefully checked to make sure it's all there and in two tidy boxes bundled together. It goes directly into the trash.

Those three Dooney & Burke leather purses that were in a box marked "for the case"? When they don't show up, and you ask about them, you're told "some of our volunteers aren't very honest and take things, because they're not LDS". VERY insulting to us, non-LDS who DO donate to you!

Then, there's the weird rotation. Every tag has a "pull date" on it. Rather than mark things down so they'll sell, items are pulled off the shelves to make room for more. It doesn't matter if the new stuff is just like the old stuff - out it goes. If it's breakable, it goes into a bin and is basically smashed.

Why not reduce your prices, DI? You're throwing out books because they're priced higher than when they were new -- and you'd sell LOTS of them if they were 25 or 50 cents, rather than $1 or $2.

Cool....I think it's about time....and at least it's not on Rivedale Road. Travel a little ...save a lot. Their stock gets rotated to other stores along the Wasatch front....that's why you don't see the turn around....visit other stores even clear up to Rexberg, Idaho....you might see your stuff up there

Dear Bugs

I'm talking about three Dooney and Bourke purses that cost $170, 250 and $400 when new....and were barely used. Trust me. No one ever saw them come out on the floor for sale at ANY Deseret Industries. They are VERY recognizable items, and there's no way they'd have been missed if they had ever been up for sale.

I go to several of them, about once a week and know many other people who do, also.

They went out the "back door". Ask about that sometimes.

Ever see someone go into a DI and immediately have a cart full of great items? I have.

Ever have one of the mentally-challenged employees tell you that she had a "friend" who paid her to hide things in a certain place? I have.

Blaming the "not very honest" non-Mormons is dishonest itself.

Good afternoon & Happy Sunday!

yah as a recently transplanted Minnesotan, to Bountiful area; I used to donate for YEARS, to Goodwill Industries; the 'copycat' outfit which is modeled after DI here.

Well that stopped after a vintage antique phonograph was dropped off at GI by a neighbor. It was item my ex wanted. It too, NEVER appeared on the sales floor! We literally arrived minutes after it was dropped off. They denied it's very existence! UNBELIEVABLE !!!

Epilepsy Foundation and ARC were then donation spots of choice ... they at least were curbside pick-up.

So it appears only the name perhaps has changed (unfortunately human nature prevails at it's most selfish, & opportunistic here, too). Sad, though I have bought things at DI before. My ex used to live in Ogden (of all places ...)

Well maybe EDUCATION AND POLICY CHANGE as to NOT tolerating this on part of DI WORKERS will solve this problem and it will be a 'win-win' for ALL -- instead of being only for the 'IN' crowd ... !

Thank you for this opportunity to comment.

I think that the old Deseret Industries was fine the way it was. It had alot of room for things and I can't see why they need a new Deseret Industries at all. The old DI was just wonderful and to me they should have kept it that way because that was the biggest DI store I've ever been to so I'm very disapointed in this idea.
Thanks: MayLyn
