Beware Buttars:

If SLC passes such a law any move on the part of the the legislature to say that SLC cannot pass a gay rights bill would run afoul of the US Supreme Court decision in the Colorado Amendment 2 case.

It said that you cannot deny gay people access to the political process or make them strangers to the law.

More Info Supreme Court Ruling:

Romer v. Evans, 517 U.S. 620 (1996),

was a United States Supreme Court case dealing with civil rights and state laws. The Court gave its ruling on May 20, 1996 against an amendment to the Colorado state constitution that would have prevented any city, town or county in the state from taking any legislative, executive, or judicial action to protect homosexual citizens from discrimination on the basis of their sexual orientation.

When someone is outrageously against something, it is usually because they have something to hide. What are you hiding, Chris? Why does it matter what SLC does regarding lesbians and gays. SLC is not in your district. If you fear that their viewpoint might spread, maybe it will. But if it does, it is because of the populace. If politicians were doing the unpopular thing, they would be unelected. Just because your constituency believes as you profess to believe does not mean everybody else does. Society has come a long way in the last 100 years. It used to be a scarlet letter for a divorced woman. Future generations are going to wonder what were you thinking, Chris.

Buttars is like Obabma; Utah Republicans are like US Congress Dems; If your in charge, its your way.

I support Buttars

on this one or else I want the right to designate that not one cent of my taxes goes to Salt Lake City.

Chris Buttars has shown his true colors repeatedly with racist and bigoted comments. To say that Mormons should be a protected class because of the persecution they have endured is ridiculous! They CHOOSE to be Mormon. Gay people don't CHOOSE to be gay, they are born that way. Mormons are the reason this type of legislation is needed in Utah and elsewhere. They are the ones doing the discriminating. Forcing their beliefs on others, not just in Utah, but other places such as was the case with Proposition 8 in California.

WAKE UP people! Chris Buttars is a bigoted racist that should not be given the time of day.

Just amazing

the things that come out of Mr Buttars mouth. Makes one wonder if there is a brain inside that large round head!

Buttars = ?

Me thinks he doth protest too much!

Good job Chris

First of all, please cite the Constitutional authority for cities to legislate anything. That is reserved for the state legislatures dealing with state issues and Congress dealing with national issues.

These little city tyrants have not the authority to legislate anything. And once again let us not forget that the Supreme Court is subject to the Constitution not the Constitution to the Supreme court. The Supreme Court has become much like the US Congress, acting outside their enumerated Constitutional authority.

Gays and Lesbians have no special rights, otherwise we may as well take the equal out of rights and just start delegating rights to every special group of people who have special needs and circumstances.

Give me a stinking break! Can someone tell me why someone would want to discriminate against a gay or lesbian if they were productive and beneficial to a business? Why is that they have to keep asking for special favors if they are in fact capable and productive.

Or could it be that they want to force their lifestyles and attitudes on a society who overwhelmingly reject it? When your argument fails to convince society you're right, you want to force it.

West Jordan is proud. You go Chris, Heavenly Father is on your side.

Utahan's saddened again!

It is just a matter of time before DOMA, Don't ask, don't tell get eliminated.

Utah, your citizens are mostly center moderate. Do we need to go thru this again? The Legislature against SLC?

The world around you is changing.

@ Good Job Chris

No one is trying to legislate anything - Salt Lake City is talking about an ORDINANCE they want to pass - which they have every right to do. (See Utah State Code 10-8-84.)

And, if no one is discriminating against LGBT individuals, then what difference does it make if it is clarified that doing so is not allowed?

(As for Buttars comments about Mormons and Jews, he may not be aware - but those are religious groups and, as such, are already protected.)

Umm...

Isn't there some state code that prohibits the legislature from interfering in municipal matters and wasn't there a big ruckus a while ago about people who don't live in a city trying to determine what ordinances that city has?

Shouldn't Buttars be minding his own business?

Birth vs. Choice

Race is something you are born with. Religion is something you choose.

Both are protected from discrimination.

Whether being LGBT is a choice or not, why should it not be protected when these other categories are?

RE: Birth vs. Choice

BECAUSE BEHAVIOUR is NOT a protected right nor constitutionally guaranteed.

Good omen for SLC

If Senator Buttars is leading the fight against Salt Lake City, that probably means pretty much everyone else is on the other side.

re: RE: Birth vs. Choice

Didn't you read what you responded to? You said, "BECAUSE BEHAVIOUR is NOT a protected right nor constitutionally guaranteed." You are responding to a post that talked about "religion." Religion, my friend, is a choice and not something you're born with, so your argument is illogical.

Go chris B. I think some people need to be discriminated against. Especially gays. We can love them as people but we don't need to bend over for them. Which you know they all want you to do.

Timberwolf

Funny how the GL groups all jump in here soooo early in the morning to spout their Liberal trash talk in the tribune every time something comes up concerning the far left liberal agenda here in Utah, You might think maybe that there was some sort of organized networking going on or something, very small percentage of the populous with a very loud decibel level, just ignore them Senator..

SJ Bobkins

For heavens sake, people don't choose to be gay. Who would wish to face the type of crap gays deal with on a daily or even hourly basis? They are born to be gay in the same way as I was born left handed and with blue eyes. If there wasn't such extreme hatred and discrimination exhibited to gay people they wouldn't need the special legislation, but there is and the 14th amendment obviously hasn't make the way easier. Forty years from now even the most strident, behavior and Leviticus crowd, will look as silly as those who felt that slavery was just great because blacks have no soul, no ability to learn, and no ability to moderate their base instincts. Buttars is a terrible embarrassment to Utah, and to LDS people everywhere.
