Here's hoping we'll see a 'strong' O-line live up to expectation--against a national class program and veteran D-line... Effective Run-blocking against better competition has almost ALWAYS been the O-line's challenge since Lavell's days. May the 'surge' live--during especially these first few games, and progress throughout the whole the season. And along with decent recruiting in recent years, coupled with the return of Manase Tonga back in the lineup, here's expecting that we're FINALLY going to see a consistent, real, honest-to-goodness dominant run-game--no matter who's carrying the ball! Go Cougs!!!

Re: Anonymous

I'm actually hoping the O-Line exceeds expectations in every possible way against OU. Everyone knows the BYU O-Line is the biggest question mark going into the season. Here's hoping they rise to the occasion. I agree completely with poor run blocking in big games. It's the nemesis of recruiting and creating huge 6-5, 350 lbs pass blockers, rather than mobile 295 lbs rush blockers. Some of it may be coaching as well, but a lot of it is the system we've created. Unga and Tonga will have to carve their own paths to three and four yard gains this season, because they won't likely get any blocking from the line past the line of scrimmage.

BYU has had traditionaly good offensive lines. I expect nothing else this year. The Line will be fine. I think the quaterback is the key for BYU teams. They must have great, not good but great, play from that position. The rest of the team feeds off of it. Look around Max and relax, You can do it. If you go anywhere in the country and lead your team with confidence and reliability the rest of the team will follow. Remember, IT'S JUST A GAME.

Too Slow

Big, strong, but slower than Oprah.
Like they say, if you can do a little of everything, you can't do one thing well.
But it will be nice to have another body available as they cart Cougars off the field.

Well now the O line is new I would think that Max "where is the ball Hall" is a little worried. OK will have his number with such a line in place. Making progress in camp does not make it in a game.

I see Max "where is the ball Hall" giving the ball to OK a little more than he wants with a new O line. Start praying now for that is what it will take to stay with OK.

Moose Knuckle

So good. So fast.

Tough task

I played center at Clemson in the 70's. Just moving to guard was a huge difference. You get used to assignments, and they become almost reflexive, then everything changes.

One of my linemates, and excellent right tackle, had to move to left tackle. Same position, other side, and it took him a while to get it together.

It will be interesting to see just how sharp this cat Moose is.
And if he DOES get in, believe me, opponents will know and work him.

Size means nothing if you have no idea where your opponent is coming from.

Moose...

Knock um down, big guy!

Ankle biter

Hey montanacutter, you think it's fun to diss Max Hall. Bad choice. He is a great QB and and even better person, whether there is a W or L after any game.

Jim

Funny how these yewts, who sit in mommy's basement all day, have nothing better to do than to post comments on BYU articles. Don't you have a gas pump to go watch over or something?

The Docta

Hopefully the O-line does a good job...They are the key to the team. When you look back at any game the past two seasons, Max Hall is only great when he's in a posh comfortable pocket. Any pressure and he falls apart. That's been his only glaring flaw when comparing him to other QB's. Good luck O-line.

Great article about a great guy - my favorite grandson. I'm another one who only calls him Marco; I'm his grandmother in Minneapolis, MN. Something else he has besides muscle is a great sense of humor...funny and smart is an awesome combo.

The MOOSE is loose

Even with our inexperienced O line were going to knock the dung out of those loud mouth yewts. They won't be as lucky this year we will beat them in Provo and all will be right with the world.

GOOOOOO COOOOOOGARRRRRRRS!!!!!!

Go to Div II

Face it Cougs...Your line and secondary are iffy, most of your team are weakling RM's.
Do yourself a favor and move down to Div II where at least you'll be able to compete.
It's won't be fair to your players, to send them out to get smashed every game.
Think of the children!

Re: Okie Earl

"Do yourself a favor and move down to Div II where at least you'll be able to compete."????? I'm pretty sure that even in Oklahoma 10-3 seasons are pretty good. Just because the BCS teams believe that any non-BCS school belongs in Div II doesn't mean they play that way, ala Boise State. OU has a great team, as usual, but BYU is consistently competitive in Div I.

13 year old Cougar fan

Hey one thing to look at on the bright side. Tongas back and he can really help with the blocking scheme, both on run and pass. And Reynolds is possible for the Oklahoma game. This year is BYU's year. They have to step it up and I think they will especially the offence. You have a senior quarter back whos played in what two maybe three bowl games. And BYU just came off a grueling 3 loss season. They are going to come into the season knowing they have to perform. Whereas last year they came in as the conference champions and #15 in the rankings, and haven't you noticed that as soon as the cougars were #8 in the nation they lost. This year they will be going into each and every game humbled. And lets face it Utah fans, BYU's got alot of talent. And one of the top offenses in the conference.

RE: TO Okie Earl

Move down to Div. II??? You might want to go back and read the reasons OU and we were selected to play in this game. I believe consistency over the past three years. Granted of the few teams considered you and us were the only ones that could but don't forget we were on the list ALSO.

"Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge?" Job 38:2

Need I remind you that you lost four O-lineman. Why does it cause us a problem and not you? Because your in a BCS conference! Need I remind you of the stuggles you had with TCU (in our conference) last year until their offensive injuries in that game killed them. Or maybe about the time they, TCU, went to NORMAN to kick your butts?

Maybe your Secondary that gave up 45 against Texas, 31 AGAINST KANSAS, and 41 against OSU. I accually feel bad for you, well your players , they obviously returned (instead of go to the NFL) in hopes of going back to the BCS title game and winning. Even if you beat us we all know that you won't make it back. Seeyou in Arlington.

Okie Earl is just trying to stir up a little dust bowl. He's bored.

Okie Earl

You're right on, Samurai.
I am bored, and I will be MORE bored watching us finish this game halfway through the second quarter.

Div II is exactly where you belong.

O

Samurai Jack

Remember Okie...

Good times come and they go.

This is the second meeting between OU and BYU.

First meeting: BYU 32 OU 7

Sorry day for the Sooners in that bowl game getting waxed by a "division II worthy opponent". Or is it that the 1990's Sooners were worthy of division II status?
