I just want to express my appreciation for this very thoughtful article. I will be pondering its words for some time to come. Thank you, Brother Card.

(Matthew 6:2 NIV) " "So when you give to the needy,do not announce it with trumpets,as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.

"I pray that people see my good works and I don't." Martin Luther

So what is wrong with seeking the praise of others. I've always taught my kids to do the best they can and be proud of what they do. But not to let pride override what they have done.

What is wrong with seeking praise? I've always taught my children to be the best they can be and to be proud of being the best. Just not to let pride over shadow what they do.

In professional life we constantly seek praise - thats how you get promoted. In academics and sports etc, its all about praise for accomplishments recognized by others. It's how you receive the praise that is the issue - humbly or arrogantly.

"The meek shall inherit the earth"
The meek are those who recognize and "obey Gods command" ( they do not seek the glory of men)
Those who obey Gods command...receive His "power"...which power subdues nations..
The meek need not beat their own drum...for the Master does their bidding.......
Pride always comes before the fall...and the pride is the.."look at me..."Aint I wonderful"''I am the best" "my son is better than your Son, I this...I that....The I's have their reward
But in the day of judgement the meek shall inherit all

In response to Mike's comment, the goal is to do well, to be the best that you can--but not for the praise of others. That creates a competitive, stratified mindset and worldview that brings its own set of problems--both personally and globally. Cooperation while seeking excellence works better than competition. Excellence will often bring praise, but performing with the goal of seeking praise is a subtle snare.
