Miyazaki is the most under-rated director/animator working today. Nausicca, Totoro, Spirited Away, Kikki's, Howl's Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke are all classics. If you have young children and want good, clean, fun entertainment, then these are the movies for you.
.. I don't know how long its been since you've seen Princess Mononoke. I clearly remember some pretty violent scenes. It might be more appropriate for the teen and above crowd.
It's true - "Princess Mononoke" is a great film, but it really isn't a film for kids. Other than that, films like "Kiki's Delivery Service" and "Spirited Away" (though this one may be a tad too scary for the youngest of children) and "My Neighbor Totoro" are also great films and quite appropriate for most kids.
And yes, Miyazaki is one of the best directors around, making works of art that appeal to young and old alike. I'm really looking forward to "Ponyo".
jeff, wish you could go back and give this a higher rating... i wish it had captured your imagination more than it did, because the art in it is so lovely and elegant and moves beyond formulas. how about celebrating the fact that unlike the vast majority of disney films there is no 'evil' person who must be destroyed, and there is no wedding, no happily ever after just a balance that is precarious and a lot of people hoping the best for the new generation? i think it's outside of the box and a movie that i felt proud to take some young kids to today, ages 4 to 9 and all were delighted, as it was a delight without being a worry for them. and it was hopeful, unlike wall-e's horrid people bound to the equivalent of wheelchairs... thank god someone is willing to still produce animation by hand!!
Save yourself $8 and just drive needles in your eye at home for free. This movie as so bad even my nephews thought it was weird. A few minutes in to it they actually asked me if we were in the wrong theatre. Sometimes kids movies can be hard to sit thru, but this goes way beyond any of that. Tedious in the extreme. Adults don't get it and the kids certainly don't. I can say it was clean although the male wearing earrings and eye make up was very strange - way beyond culture difference.
