Wow! That is amazing! Science has gone so far!
Wow. I am tired if i get less than 10 hours of sleep. Is that a genetic problem too? Ha ha ha.
If I don't get ten hours of sleep every night I act like a disconnected, zombie, jerk all day. My thinking is unclear and insensible. Maybe that is why I am telling you this. Besides that, I am a light sleeper which doesn't make me any too functional during the day.
This is no laughing matter. This theft of discrimination of DNA should be offensive to all who care about the future of our society. There was a time in this Country when this sort of outrageous scientific waste was unthinkable. Now, it is apparently widely accepted.
Who has time to sleep nowadays? There is a reason why people drive weird, have road rage wars, and blabber about nothing on their cell phones day after day. Its all due to too much caffeine and not enough sleep.
I don't know about Genes or DNA being a significant cause or not? I'll have to think about that one for awhile.
suggestion: Look for the gene in people with bipolar disorder. Many have a premorbid history of being short sleepers along with what's called "hyperthymic temperament."

Being one that sleeps short hours it has always been a question on my mind why I can't sleep longer that 4 or 5 hours. I automatically wake up every morning without the need of an alarm. Once I am awake I can't lay in bed or try to go back to sleep as I just lay there and think about all that I could be doing. I feel rested and alert and get anxious if I just lay there and toss and turn. I don't have any financial worries or job worries, it is just something I have lived with all my life.
It makes it hard as I have to remain quiet and not make noise and disturb others while they sleep longer. At times I feel jealous that others can sleep longer because at 3am what can you do that doesn't make noise?
Very interesting, I have never gotten more than 4/5 hours of sleep a night since I was in grade school, and as said above, I work and go non stop all day long. Good to know there might be genetic reasoning behind it...I have always worried about health issues from it, although never had any hit me.
sleeping is a waste of time, and eating is a waste of money.
John Charity Sprig, What are you talking about? The researchers didn't alter the participants genetics, they were found to have genetic differences.
Mr. SPRIG is an obvious imposter who is seeking to gain noteriety by ridiculing a specific commenter. SPRIG's postings should be removed as dishonest.
I get the impression the doctors in this study are not fully taken into account other potentially related factors. I don't believe the human body can function well with very little sleep and if there is a genetic mutation that seems to allow people to flourish and thrive with very little sleep they are probably ignoring other impacts to this lifestyle. I suspect there are direct and subtle consequences/impacts to your overall health when insufficent sleep over prolonged periods of time occur. The body could be harmed in ways that the sleep study people are not taking into account or realize. These so-called hyperactive/hyperproductive people could be central to the old addage "The candle that burns twice as bright burns half as long". Too many of these studies work in isolation, in silos, with narrow visions or scope and thus the outcome or results of their work or "study" is thus flawed and or profoundly incomplete (and in turn misleading). Patients need to be wary and cautious as mediciine is a "practice", never an absolute.
Debate on how much sleep is necessary continues, but it is probably safe to say that young children need at least 8 hours of sleep a day while adults should get more than 6. Certainly, these numbers are not fixed and there are cases where some do fine with only a few hours while others do not. The bottom line is that our brains need sleep, deep sleep, and REM to function efficiently.
I have always needed more sleep than most people. If left to my own devices, I would sleep 10 hrs a night and function well. 8 hours leaves me feeling tired and wanting a nap soon after I wake up. I am not lazy, even though my in-laws thought so. They considered it a mortal sin to sleep late on a Saturday morning and thought we should be up at dawn doing yardwork. Luckily for our neighbors, we felt differently. Sleep is not a one size fits all and society needs to recognize that.
I have always gotten along well with little sleep now in my mid 40's I find I need 7 hours of sleep to function. Growing up though it was generally 4-5. I went all through high school going to bed around 1-2 AM getting up at 5AM for football practice, wrestling, long work outs then I had a job and concerts I performed in at night that often went late. My Mom was like that two, the two of us were always up very late and still got up at the same time the rest of the family did. My older brother was useless if he did not get 9-10 hours of sleep. Even now it's 11 PM (CST) and I wont be in bed for at least 2 more hours.
Every night I get this 'partial wakeups' millions of times and I never feel rested. If I get 10 hours or more I feel like my body rested a little which is better but I don't feel like I slept.
The only time I feel any sleep ever is if I am sick and Nyquil puts me out. Those are my best sleep days. Otherwise my sleep problems ruin my life.
We have our conservative bemoaning genetic research. Utah once had great schools. What has happened?
You can get through a the school system in Utah, with no knowledge of science? What about using simple logic?
When, I read this article. I'm not reading it feeling I'm a victim. I read about how much more knowledge we are acquiring about the genome that defines the human species.
I've accepted few conservatives will never master spelling Obama. I guess they don't read enough to have come across Narcolepsy. There's sleep apnea. Educated Americans know there are sleep disorders.
If, we find genes connected to sleep, we can see how these genes influence sleep. We may be able to do way with narcotic sleeping peels like those Michael Jackson was addicted to. We eliminate some addicts.
This might surprise you. People have fallen asleep driving killing others. This research may save lives.
Can you be a conservative and notice glasses are half full?
How can you hang out with these folks without wanting to end it all? What doesn't victimize conservatives? Look up, the sky is still where it's always been.
I thought this was very interesting. I don't think that a sleep gene is in play here. I went through the Sleep Study & I do have Sleep Apnea.
hmm interesting b/c I am always tired but wasnt getting enough slepp and one of my sons that I swear is hyper can sleep 4 hrs and he can be ready to go sometimes he works and then has things with his family When he goes like that he crashes but even whne he was a little baby if you tried to transfer him to his bed he would be awake for a couple of hrs so we left him wherever he went to sleep
