I hope he's dreaming of a better defense. I thought he was suppose to be a great defensive coach? What a let down, maybe the "Quest" will actually be something this year, other than a slogan on a shirt.
BYU BLUE!
I have a close friend at work who is a BYU guy (I live in Michigan and grew up a MSU fan - family thing). He told me about how Utah people post more on BYU articles than BYU fans and I didn't believe him. As an MSU fan, I don't even read articles about UM, so to see a team post on articles on their rival seems weird to me so I checked it out and it is true. IMO, I think Utah fan are a lot like BSU fans in that although their teams have grown up and are doing great, some of their fans haven't. My friend gave me this link which I am happy about. Even though I am a Big 10 guy I really enjoy watching BYU, Utah, BSU and TCU. I respect the MW for what they are doing and wish them a great season. I like all I have heard and read about Bronco and Kyle. It is time for Utah fans to become as good as their team and grow up. Good luck this year BYU and I hope you give OU a run for their money!
Funy, 8 months off of my mission I wasn't dunking basketballs....
I want to see Chambers step up to his pre-2008 hype. He has adequate speed and raw talent. Their is a hole to fill, and he could be it. Receiver squad and the quarterback stable look good for the next few years. Mix in an offensive line that will be together a couple of years and 2010-2011 (did I just say that?) look good.
Looking forward to a great season, play ball!
So, according to this article, BYU's fastest player is wide receiver McKay Jacobson at 4.45. Utah's fastest player is cornerback R.J. Stanford with a 4.3 time. The other cornerback, Brandon Burton, runs a 4.33. Looks like Utah's secondary will have no problems staying with any of BYU's receivers. At 4.42, even Utah's quarterback, Corbin Louks, is faster than any BYU player!
Light in the loafers Brett Thompson?
Of course missionaries do not stay in the same top form as they were as players. But they don't sit on the couch and eat junk food for two years either. If an athlete missionary puts in a hard 30-minute per day workout (and I'm sure they leave with a pretty intense 30-minute or so daily plan from Omar) combined with the several miles most walk or bike daily, they should come back in pretty decent shape. And I knew more than a few missionary athletes who dunked throughout their whole missions. At 6'2" I wasn't a college level athlete but played hs hoops and actually dunked better on my mission because of all the biking I was putting in.
Assuming all your 40 times are accurate...so what? Jerry Rice was a 4.6 guy. Michael Irvin was a 4.6 guy. Marvin Harrison was a 4.6 guy. Austin Collie was a 4.55 guy. All of those guys seemed to have no problem getting open. And AC got open plenty easy against Utah's cornerbacks.
If there is a more overrated stat for wide receivers than the 40 time I don't know what it would be. Glad Louks runs 4.42. Sounds like he runs faster than he throws. Great recipe for a QB.
Texas Coug says 40 times are irrelevant and 4.6 guys have no problem getting open...
I run a 5.6 so I should probably be All American.
Debatable that Hall's the best QB in the conference. Best passer? I think that's safe to say. But a QB does more than pass. I'd argue that Dalton is the best QB in the league. He's crafty, mentally tough, and can hurt you with his arm and legs. I think he's the best leader of his respective team in the conference.
That's going to be tough considering the speedy teams we'll face this year...I expect Oklahoma to put upwards of 50 on the board (they did 60 half their games last year)...FSU, TCU, and Utah could all put points on the board as well as CSU and AFA. Don't know enough about Tulane to say for sure. It would take an extraordinary defensive effort to get that average back down to 17.5. I don't see it happening. I see it right around the same place as it was last year.
Texas coug makes alot of sense. Time in the 40 is only a place to start and probably only comes to play on the fly or deep post pattern. I think the keys will be: 1- can Hall throw to more than 1 or 2 receivers. If he can go to Pita, Unga, and the wideouts, it will be an amazing season. If he singles out one guy again, good teams will eat him alive. 2- can the O-line give him time to check off receivers and throw it around? 3- can the defense play better? 4- will the kicking game actually show up?
I'm a true blue man, but that is what I would be concerned with.
A 4.6 Austin Collie didn't have much of a problem getting open on 4th and 18 against Utah's 4.28 corner.
And I don't know where he got 4.45 as Jacobson's 40 time. He was one of the six fastest 100 meter guys in the state of Texas during high school.
Hall can throw to more than one player. He threw it to Collie so much last year cause it worked. He threw to more than just Collie the year before. The only time it didn't work was against Utah and TCU. The main thing I want to see Hall do more is run the ball. Keep defenses up close...
Speed is only one factor when playing football. Collie is an amazing route runner. A 4.3 or 4.2 Brice McCain was schooled by a slow 4.5 runner and Brice's speed didn't do him any good EXCEPT for catching Collie before he reached the endzone.
Jacobson is very good with routes with fly paper for hands... Who apparently runs a 4.4. I'm stoked to see him and Chambers line up on both sides of Hall.
For you Ute fans. Corby Eason(J.C. transfer)DB ran a 4.2 in high school before coming to BYU. I'm sure you'll have something else to rip into about him...
Jeff Call reported in the Deseret News on March 28, 2009 that McKay Jacobson's 40 time prior to his mission was 4.3
I don't know if he has recorded a post mission time.
Is BYU slower as a team than most BCS teams? Probably. But it appears that BYU posts slower 40 times than reality (or at least doesn't inflate them like other schools do) and doesn't mind other teams going into games believing BYU is "slow."
It's funny how, in post-game comments after a BCS school plays BYU, players mention how surprised/impressed they were by BYU's athleticism and team speed. I think BYU enjoys people under-estimating this aspect of their team.
Actually BYU's defensive team speed should be impressive this year, I think you'll see a lot of guys flying around and making plays.
Been involved with track for years -- unless a guy is competing at a national level as a sprinter, a sub 4.35 40 time is usually a complete lie.
If i could give a message to The BYU coaching staff it would be this... attack Oklahomas offencive line. Its a young inexpiernced line. Exploit it and get to sam bradford. GO! COUGS!
It wasn't his 40 time that got Collie open on 4th and 18..... IT WAS MAGIC.
Max Hall has great speed.
He completed a 2 year mission is 7 months.
