What's all this about Gov. Herbert having to be more inclusive and demonstrate that his more liberal than a majority of the people think he is? It seems that if the poll reflects Utahns than Gov. Herbert is exactly where a majority of Utahns believe he needs to be - a conservative. This is a confusing article. Why should Gov. Herbert be anything than he already seems to be? Of course as a Democrat, I'm not saying I wouldn't mind it if Gov. Herbert was actually more moderate, but democracy is about majority rule with the exception of fundamental rights that apply to all persons regardless of their political beliefs and other protected categories.
Herbert needs to show he can lead the state! If he doesn't make changes to establish HIS agenda he will not be re-elected.
Gary.....just be your CONSERVATIVE self and not a RINO like Huntsman.....and you will be our successful Governor for the next decade and a half...guaranteed!!
State employees are hoping Herbert stops the loss of their benefits at the hands of legislators. If he bows to pressure from legislative leadership and does away with the 4-day workweek, they'll know very quickly whether he supports them or not.
If Herbert can't ride herd on the legislature and at least attempt to protect some of our rights and if he can't represent ALL of the people of Utah instead of just his conservative base, I won't vote for him. I didn't vote for Huntsman, Leavitt, or Bangader but I can see that at least they were independent of the legislature and a moderating influence on their politics. If Herbert can't do the same, it's time for a new governor. BTW, I would have voted for Walker but the GOP didn't give me a chance.
Just because Herbert isn't the RINO that Gov. Huntsman was, folks think that he is too conservative? Herbert seems to have learned from Huntsman. The reason the liberal minded Huntsman chose Herbert was because he did come from the conservative Utah County political school. Huntsman has now chosen the most liberal republican (RINO) that he could find, Sen. Bell.
Remember also that when polls are taken of Utahns, that few of the citizens understand the legislature or Utah politics. Few even know who Sen Bell is or his voting record in the legislature. If they did few would say that Herbert is too conservative on this, his first decision as governor.
Herbert will be re-elected because he will prove to be a stable leader who shuns labels and engages a principled agenda.
