OKAY

Let the games begin.

Anonymous

My money is still on James Lark to be the next top BYU quarterback.

Either/Or

Jury's still out on Heaps until he steps onto the field. He could be the next Ty Detmer, and then some--or he could be Paul Shoemaker all over again.

Sure, Dick Harmon, Heap's got good PR--but let's see how he actually throws the ball with a college-level DE in his face before we keep building the hype. At this rate, by the time Heaps actually joins the Cougs, too many "BYU fans" will have bought into the frenzy and deluded themselves that they've got a BCS championship or something in the bag before the season even starts. Then they'll act like spoiled brats the minute reality sets in.

Shall we take bets on how long it takes the "Y-ners" (as opposed to those who REALLY cheer for BYU) to boo Heaps off the field? Probably after his first interception.

Let's see how the guy plays at the college level before we hand him the Heisman, OK?

Re: Either/Or @ 12:03 a.m.

DH doesn't commend BYU recruits unless they are the real deal.

You will rue the day that you doubted Heaps.

I hope he"s not the next Ben Olson.

i like him.

I couldn't figure out why the kewgies were so turned on by this kid, but now I understand. This kid is incredibly intelligent. Of course the story is written with a strong bias and leaves out a lot of facts, but a kid that has set up a network of other blue chips is amazing. He could actually help the kewgs even if he never takes one snap during his tenure at Zoobie-ville. Sounds like he already has by turning some recruits to BYU.

Whiners indeed

Nobody's talking about my Ute's recruits, and we won the Sugar Bowl, gosh darn it!

Sometimes I wonder if y'all read the article or just the headline. DH addressed all of your issues.

Big Pete

Hope Riley enjoys all of his time on the bench in Provo.

re: whiners indeed

Actually, you are the only person that mentioned the Sugar Bowl or Utah up to this point. Insecure?

Utah does the talking on the field. As a program we have more all time wins, better winning percentage, more bowl wins, and almost double the amount of wins in head-to-head games with our little brothers to the south.

Recommendation then a question

Mr. Harmon -

Please stop building up hype for this young man. From your description he sounds almost too good to be true. You are setting him up for unreasonable expectations. He is only how old? 16, 17? Let him play first at BYU. He sounds golden, but the pressure sometimes can be too much for kids. The way you are writing, if the kid doesn't win a national championship while he is Freshman then he will be a dissapointment. That may not be your intention, but that is how your article is coming across.

Now it sounds like he is recruiting other kids. Is that ok by the NCAA? Can college football team members recruit high schoolers?

re re:whiners indeed

The line that Utah does its talking on the field is the biggest laugh I've had today. Utah fans do a heckuva a LOT of their talking on these discussions boards as well. Get off your high horse, you dump comments on here as much as the Cougar fans---even more!

I wish both sides would grow up and talk like adults. I love adult sports banter, but most of the time the talk on the discussion boards is childish: "my team is badder than your team. Waaaaaaaaaaahhh."

setup

This kid is setting himself up to fail, much the same way that byu's team was setup to fail last season. When expectations and hype are through the roof - Quest for Perfection - you will fail unless you are absolutely perfect. Byu went 10-3, a great season, right?. Then why does it feel like someone died last year.

Heaps is talking about multiple national championships, holding press conferences, and promising the world to the y followers. Sorry, but the fall will be hard and painful. What will happen the first time he throws 5 picks and has two fumbles in a game? What will his publicist have to say then?

re: whiners indeed

Forgot to mention more conference titles. Utah has 26. Byu 23.

Cougar Fan

Okay, so as a Cougar fan I am a little ticked off by the attention this kids getting. The media is treating him as though he is the next big thing. He hasn't proved a thing on the field like Riley. I hope that he and Mendenhall can enjoy a nice helping, make that two, of humble pie. Is the focus of the Y sports or education, someone needs to explain that to me...

insedcure ute

You should just copy and paste your Utah stats from now on. It's easier. No...wait. Don't. We are all aware of Utah's impressive record. Some Ute fan posts it every time there is an article about BYU.

It's funny though...BYU has more fans despite that fact. And don't pull the Mormon card out and say that is why.

Me and my son have been long time season ticket holders and we are NON MORMON.

We love our local team and always will regardless of our religion.

GO COUGS!!!

RE: 12:14 am

LOL. Love the obvious sarcasm. :) Hey, even Ty Detmer threw picks, and his receivers dropped plenty of catchable passes. Mistakes happen in football, some but not all of them the QB's fault.

All I'm saying, everybody--Heaps can look and play (and talk!) like the real deal all he wants in HS. He still needs to learn to play college ball. Don't be surprised--much less tantrum-prone--to see at least a few mistakes here and there.

If ol' DH (didn't he actually offer to join BYU's cheer squad?) is right, and a flawless Heaps leads BYU to Football Nirvana (wherever that is) with 50 TD passes and no interceptions in his freshman season, wins the Heisman unanimously, and makes everyone in Provo forget all about Gifford Nielsen, Jim McMahon, Steve Young, Robbie Bosco, Ty Detmer, Steve Sarkisian, John Beck, and Max Hall (after he repents for his on-field transgressions by beating Utah THIS year), I guess I'll just have to eat those words.

Until then...

Not until....

Dick "Cougar Club" Harmon writes an article titled "The First Great BYU Defensive Back" will anything change for the TDS. BYU always has good QB play. Will this kid be any better at the collegiate level than Jon Beck was? Maybe slightly, but not exponentially like Mr. Heaps wants everyone to believe. The kid does more PR as a high school junior than most college players do. Can you say burnout?

The kid should just keep quiet, actually finish his high school career, and not set the bar so high that he can only underachieve.

And as for the mighty Cougars, this is a very good recruit to get. But unless Mr. Heaps can also play DB, the defense is still slow and unathletic. An achilles-heel that was exposed by powerhouses Colorado State, UNLV and Washington last year. That needs to change before the Y can even dream of doing what Utah has already done..twice.

Controversy

Whiners indeed = BYU fan

After all of the press events and hype around this kid, BYU has no choice but to name him the starting quarterback - possibly even next year. There's too much politics involved at this point not to put this kid on the field.

My guess is that a couple of the QB's will transfer elsewhere, between Riley Nelson, James Lark, and Jason Munns. Each of those guys has a lot of talent and deserves to get a lot of playing time somewhere.

Knowwhat

Go to CBSsports.com and see were they rank the college football programs over the last decade. 10 years is pretty relevant opposed to 25 years ago.

RE: Anonymous

How much do you want to bet?
I've seen enough injuries to quarterbacks at BYU to know you need more than one good quarterback.
Message to BYU fans: The Utes love to make comments and then sit back and watch the fireworks. They like to say all BYU fans are the same and then make statements that would raise the ire of any fan so they can have a self fulfilling prophecy. Just ignore them. They won't go away, but you'll feel better. Congrats on the Sugar Bowl win. There you go. By the way -- who did Utah recruit. I haven't been paying attention.
