John Florez: Hospital stay brings reminders of how people care

Don't fall for socialized medicine.
I generally agree with his message that we all should reach out to each other and care for each other as human beings. I do, however, differ with Mr. Florez in that I believe that immigration laws are designed to protect a nation's citizens and that should be paramount so immigration should be controlled/limited. Citizens and immigrants alike would benefit, and I believe most of the resentment directed towards folks from foreign countries would go away. I know it would for me.
I also think that current language is divisive. Why do we talk about the Latino community, the black community, the refugee community, etc? Why aren't we simply one large community made up of good people from wherever of whatever race? IMO communities should be only geographic in nature rather than ethnic. As long as immigrants are here legally, I welcome them as friends and neighbors.
I think that Mr. Florez and I would have a lot in common except for this issue.

The fundamental problem with social programs is that not everyone has such integrity to not over-utilize the system. I favor a catastrophic health coverage. I don't favor a health care plan that can be used routinely for trivial conditions that everyone should know how to manage. Quite frankly, the vast majority of office visits are for conditions that are self-limiting. In other words, given a day or week or two the condition will pass.
