The more I see the cost of obesity to the healthcare system, the more I wonder where those high mucky-mucks got their figures. Did they ask doctors to report the cost for everyone over a certain weight? What about those who are very muscular? Did they pick diseases they assumed were caused by obesity, and just go for the cost of those? If that is the case did they divide childhood obesity from adult-onset? Did they take into consideration that many people who are being treated for high blood pressure and cholesterol don't fit their idea of obesity? Did they consider the chronic diseases obese people are being treated for which have nothing to do with their weight? Statistics sound good until you dig a little deeper and find out how they were arrived at. I heard years ago a study that decided that ice cream caused drownings which may be shocking until you realize there is more ice cream sold during the summer when more people are in or near the water, so they have more chance of drowning.
So those of you who come up with these statistics, please tell us how you got them!!!!
The poor voter turnout is not because it is inconvenient, it is caused not only by apathy, but ignorance of the election process in Utah. Many say why bother to vote in the general election, because there is no real choice. The first that most even think of who is on the ballot is on the first Tuesday of November. Then the only office that they seem concerned with is the election of the president, due to constant media coverage.
Instead of voting to at least throw out the incumbent all they do is verbally complain about the system or complain in the DesNews comment section. Very few even get involved in the candidate selection process. They make no effort to get good candidates elected, and very few even take advantage of the neighborhood caucus system and the conventions. They just sit back and complain that it is rigged, because that is easier than getting involved.
We saw last year how citizen involvement can remove an entrenched House member. They did this in spite of the party and the leadership which supported the incumbent.
Everyone may not agree with you, but get involved at some level and quit whining.
Preventable, but stil person al resposiblity,
if the fatty fat fats have pay for ALL thier own health care, wouldn't it make easier them to take responsibility?
giving power to governemnt over our lives just give the feds the power to dictate over every part of our lives.
is that desirable?
