...on I-15 between Brigham and Ogden. For some reason, drivers think the speed limit is 85...and the trucks will tailgate you, if you're going the speed limit.

I agree with your comments 100%-- I drove that section this morning and at 80 I was tail gated in the slow lane almost constantly. The cars and TRIPLE TRAILER rigs passed me in the fast lane like I was going 60.
I'm surprised there aren't more accidents up that way....

if you're getting tailgated, there is a good chance that YOU are causing a dangerous situation by blocking faster traffic. speed limits are pointless if the flow of traffic is 80. move over or keep up.

Why are you always justifying breaking the law?
Why is it that in a state where the majority of the people claim to "honor, obey and sustain the law" drivers can't seem to read their speedometer?

At least the bike wasn't being used on I-15. Speed kills. And after 10 years in the Philly area where I think the drivers are a bit scary, when I return to Utah, I am amazed at how fast and reckless the Utah drivers are on the freeways.

I was driving home from MT to SLC yesterday when that wreck on the Northbound I-15 accident happened. By the time the rubberneckers were past the wreck the cars were all being towed away as we passed the accident site. IT was just insane how and accident on the northbound lane can slow down the southbound traffic. Then, I got into SLC about rush hour and was amazed at how people were driving and I am surprised there aren't more accidents. I am very careful not to tailgate but people seem hell bent on doing it, I have been pas sing people in the left lane and had other drivers pull behind me flashing, honking, waving get over at me -good grief people I will move out of your way as soon as I pass the car and I will move over. I agree with Anonymous 6:47 people are very reckless drivers. I think I will head back to our summer home in MT as soon as I can, I am sorry that I came home to SLC yesterday, I usually try to travel on weekends where there is less traffic.

I have lived here in Utah for over 30 years and I have noticed that the drivers have become more aggressive over the past few years. I would like to know why Utahns are being blamed for this kind of driving when there has been so many out of staters move into our state. You need to remember that when someone moves into our state they change their license plates. This past week I just drove through California and Nevada and believe me they drive just like everyone here!

There are too many items that are not secured on cars, trucks, vans, etc. People need to be more wise with their stuff so it doesn't end up on the road, on my windshield, in my grill; all of these things result in rollovers and wrecks. Speed doesn't help and neither do the drivers that think they are on the Salt Flats.

I moved to Utah in 1995 and asked my insurance agent how fast I could drive because I was amazed at the speeders. He said as fast as the traffic. I have driven in over 20 states. You guys are the most reckless. Miami is the worst, but that's a 3rd world environment.

Most large trucks have a limitor that only allows them go to 65 mph. If big trucks are passing you - you are going slower than 65 mph in a 75 mph zone - and yes you are road hazard. You may drive on the old highway if you can't keep up. The speed limit there is 55 mph.

Amazing how the issue addressed in the article isn't the one being argued about. Speed wasn't even mentioned in the article. The CAUSE of the accident was the bicycle left in the middle of the road by someone who was too preoccupied and selfish to tie down their cargo resulting in a small child needing to be airlifted to the hospital and multiple other injuries. Argue about the stupid driver who left the bike behind.

Maybe my wording was a little straight forward for some of you. "Flow" of traffic trumps any posted speed limit and i do believe that you can receive a ticket for going the speed limit and causing long lines of cars behind you. i'm not one to tailgate myself but i damn sure don't make myself a target for tailgaters. "No one shall wait for me" is my driving motto, i wish more people here drove like that. Have a great weekend and i hope all that were involved in this accident are ok.

It is also the law that you yield to faster traffic and move to the right, no matter what the speed limit is. It is not your job to enforce the speed limit by sitting in the passing lane.

There are more assumptions flying around here than bicycles on I-15. Many posters seem to imply that everyone was speeding. Likewise, most posters have assumed the bicycle wasn't secured but there's no way of knowing this.

Believe it or not--accidents do happen. That's why they're called accidents.

Reading these comments is an interesting study in human nature.
