Perhaps the Santaquin police department could get some training to learn about the use of non-lethal force.
Dear Lyn,
Same SWAT team, different result. Reason: Man didn't come at them with gun. Moral: The police resolve hundreds of situations like this peacefully when the people involved are only suicidal and not homicidal. This guy lived because he didn't point a shotgun at officers.
Lyn, the Santaquinn case was a man bent on dying but couldn't bear shooting himself so he pointed guns at cops. Don't point a gun at a cop and you will not get shot either.
The Utah County metro SWAT team is made up of officers in three PDs...Provo, Orem, Am. Fork.
now its provo, orem, and byu. Am. Fork has its own.
40 police for one old guy who wanted to check out. Thats insanity. Plus look at all the lost traffic revenue. Now I know how people governed by the taliban feel.
That was right by my sister's house. They were all over her yard trying to find the guy. She and her family had to leave for several hours.
The police did a very good job of handling the situation. We watched the whole thing from our front window as it happened right across the street. They put our house on lock-down and kept in communication with us in case we needed to evacuate.
We feel like the lindon police and those involved are doing a great job keeping our community safe.
to subdue one elderly man?! They were sure aching to use them nice automatic weapons. Maybe they wanted to pose for their picture.
One would think they were in a gun fight with drug cartels.
From the pictures it looked like swat was going to beat him to the kill. Just my opinion but that is not how you confront a suicidal guy with a gun. He wants to die but can't get the nerve to do it himself all he has to do is point the gun in a different direction and anyone of those trigger-happy swat members would shoot him down. Police-assisted Suicide.
I live nearby and am happy with the job the police did. To all you "experts" that think they should have handled it differently I wonder...how many times have you encountered someone holding a gun, threatening suicide and shouting at you? Keep in mind you are not only tasked with keeping him under control but keeping all the nearby neighbors safe as well.
