BYU?

It's hysterical to me when articles talk about BYU's unprecedented home win streak, they never mention how weak their opponents are at home games; this is very misleading information. Nevertheless, I'll give BYU some credit this year for growing some nuggets and scheduling OU and FSU.

The Utes have set the standard in tough scheduling home or away, as evident in 2003 & 2004 when the Utes scheduled Oregon and CAL both at home. Of course, both were Utah's victory.

Like the Utes, the same can go for TCU and their aggressive scheduling approach. They aren't afraid to play anyone home or away.

including Utah

Too bad that "weak" schedule includes the Utes. Wish they would elevate their program so they wouldn't be "weak" most years.

RE: BYU?

You have got to be kidding. Why didn't you mention the nuggets you grew to schedule Weber State or Northern Arizona? BYU traditionally has the tougher non-conference schedule as its only been in the recent few seasons that Utah has scheduled up. Get over yourself and see things for what they are, not what you dream them to be.

UTAH?

Gee, thanks for the credit, Utah fan. Who are you guys playing this year? What in the world is San Jose St. doing on your schedule?
Thanks for the credit, though. We were really hoping you'd give it to us.

Now THAT'S hysterical...

Strength of schedule

There is no sense in arguing about who has the tougher schedule between BYU and Utah. The two teams have had very similar strength of schedules since about 1995. Both have had a few I-AA teams on the schedule, both play Utah State, and both play 2 BCS conference teams each year.

BYU has been the more consistent team against conference opponents while Utah has won more of the big games against teams from BCS conferences.

The end.

Statguy

Here's an interesting stat about the depth of the MWC. For the past 5 years, the conference champion has gone undefeated in conference.

Utah did it in 2008.
BYU did it in 2007.
BYU did it in 2006.
TCU did it in 2005.
Utah did it in 2004.

Funny how each year there's a team no one else can touch. But it's been three different teams over five years. Maybe there is an elite class.

RudyC

The MWC is only hindered by the abysmal TV contract. All the teams can play football. UNM was the only MWC team to be Bowl eligible 7 consecitive years. UNM blew out Utah in Salt Lake when Urban Meyer was supposed king of the MWC. Mike Locksley is bringing the HEAT for all other MWC teams to see and feel.

Pokes fan

What? No mention of the Cowboys? While I admit we deserved the last place in the preseason poll, I think we'll come in around 5th, with the season highlight of a win against TCU. Should be a pretty fun season to watch for all teams.

Simon McBride

BYU fans seem to have short memories. (Except when it comes to 1984) They were horrible against Utah last November and then were spanked by a mediocre team in December so what is on the lips of all Cougar fans? Beating Oklahoma, sweeping through the Mountain West and playing for a national championship! Unbelievable.

To: Pokes fan

Your lowlight will be the loss to Weber State:)

byu fan man

I admit whoming might win 2 games but5th who are you kiding !!!
you will sit the ncaa record for bigest blow out whin you lose 68-0 to texas and people will wonder what is going on in this cow patch you call War mamerall stadium !!!

Look at your scedulle
giving whyoming can lick there wonds and not totally get beat up whin you play teaxas and then colarado!!! in the 2nd and 3rd week!!!
if your team is not beat up you might bee 7th but that's onlly if you can win more games then the Aztecs and Loboes!!! sory but Unavesty of Whyoming has to sell There program and untell you can stay with csu or Airforce you are at the botom of the confrece!!!

Angel

Simon MCBride posts that he doesn't think my Coogs can win it all this year. He's in for a shock. Max Hall should be the favorite for the Heisman after he puts up 600 yards against Oklahoma and BYU stuns the nation. Florida State will be easy at home and no MWC team can come close to the Cougars at the LaVell. No way the BCS can keep the Cougars out of the National Championship game after going undefeated. My sources tell me that practices are unbelievable and the offense is the best ever. Yes, I said it, best ever. Nobody will come close to the mighty Coogs this year. Take it to the bank!!

funny

its clear that the ute fans have seen the sale at the liquor store. 30% off if they show their season parking pass at the wonderful 38,000 seat stadium. Now keep drinking and keep dreaming that the utes play tougher opponents than BYU of TCU...

To BYU Fan

Yes, we have San Jose St, Utah State, Louisville and Oregon as our OOC games this year. Why do you bring up San Jose St.?? You all had trouble at home with that Division VI team you played last year. How about that USU team that you had issues with??? That San Jose St.team would have played better than you all did at the "VEG" last December!! Funny how you all think you are high and mighty after loosing to a horrible 5th place AZ team in your bowl game!!! I am so sick and tired of YBU fans and the better than you attitude they walk around with.

GO UTES

Jerry

Idaho State is not very good playing football. They were 1-11 last year but they are smart. If you are going to lose why not get paid for it. So they schedule a game in September with Oklahoma at Norman in a stadium that seats 90 thousand + It is good that they have a large stadium because Idaho
State is going to bring about 100 avid fans. If OSU wins the game it should really help their chances for a shot at the national title.

UNLV

I think UNLV is definitely a sleeper team this year that should be taken seriously. Especially since we play them in Vegas this year, and after how close the game at LES was.

Interesting though that BYU has never lost in Vegas to UNLV. The biggest threat is obviously Omar Clayton and the spread offense. I think it could be a close, tough game but I think the opener against OU will give the team some good preparation defending the spread. I think the winners mentality will prevail for BYU though, something that the boys in Vegas just don't have. BYU by 3.

P.S. I think the Rebels could surprise a lot of other teams this year.

Cougar Elitist

It's going to be a great season, again. Go MWC!

The Big three are tough wins to come by for anyone in the nation:

TCU earns it's respect with quickness and focus; they just put it all out on the field. They walk the walk--giving any team real matchup problems to consider.

The Cougars have put a program in place to be formidable year after year. If going undefeated in the MWC 2 out of the last 3 years is not worthy of respect, then rivals better watch out when BYU does have a so-called break out year. Every year is a possibility given they are stockpiled with the same level of potential they have had the past few years.

The Utes are good in years when their fans talk the least amount of smack! Like last year. Their fans are talking smack now, all based on last year, because talk is all they've got this year. Whittingham will get that program to be consistent yet, but we all know there will be a drop off! A couple mediocre years and then Ute fans will hold their breath in hopes to be good again.

Schedules

Utah's 2004 & 2008 schedules were much stronger than byu's in 1984.
That's the truth.

Anonymous

ya that is the truth, but there is a difference. BYU won every game and did what they had to do to win a Championship, so did Utah. Great thing the BCS didnt exist back then. The real truth is is that Utah may have won a HUGE Bowl game against a good Alabama team, but that doesnt give u a National Championship in todays world. That's the truth. SORRY UTES!. You can say all you want about BYU not deserving a National Title because their schedule was not good or you just hate us because we won a National Title and didnt. Truth is you can't take away BYU's Title, it's on record. The BCS, as it is today can take your National Title hopes down the drain Utah.

to Angel

HA, HA, HA, HA - you are funny!!!! 600 yards against OK - that is a good one!!! FSU will be "easy at home" - ha, ha! Oh yea and "no MWC team can come close to the cougars at the LaVell!! that was really funny - what about UNLV last year - they were 1 of a couple mwc teams that were "close"!! If you haven't already looked into it, you might want to start your new career as a stand up comedian.
