Becker nuts again

Property owners have every right to discriminate who they rent their properties to. Some people just believe because they are renters they can destroy owners property and the owners have the right to protect their property from destruction.

Certain races tend to create communal homes for far too many occupants that are unsafe, hazardous, and unhealthy. Property owner and renters have the same right to pick and choose who they rent to in protecting their rights.

Those who claim discrimination are merely the ones who are the most likely to destroy the property or abuse it.

This sounds like many other

groups who want tax money for their pet projects.
"hearing-impaired man who went to a movie theater that had no accommodations for him" - Perhaps it would be better for someone hearing impaired to bring what they know they will need, or patronize movie theaters that they know have accomodations for them. He should "vote" with his money.
"a family whose landlord would not fix their stove for three months because the family did not speak English" - How is it determined that the landlord didn't fix the stove because the tenents didn't speak english? She said I won't fix the stove until you ask me in english?
"a man who was evicted from his rental home because he was gay." - How does the man evicted from the rental home know it was because he is gay, was that stated?
I understand that discrimination occurs but it is also often claimed by "victims" who don't accept responsibility for their own actions as well.

I guess the comments posted here only underscore why the non-discrimination ordinance is needed.

Danny C.

Until you can change people's hearts, anti-discrimination efforts won't go very far.

Every one of the instances in the article are wrong - it is a shame we need ordinances to regulate the fair treatment of others and showing compassion for others.

As long as the ordinance does not impact private property rights with in the law It is a good idea

The right to wear woman clothes?

I heard a news story on the recommended discrimination laws and it includes making it illegal to fire someone because of gender identity. In other words, if Frank keeps showing up to the office in a pink dress and fake wig, you couldn't fire him. I get where some of the ideas are coming from, but creating a right to pretend to be the opposite sex doesn't make sense.

Amazing

Discrimination causes graffiti? Really?

How stupid do these people think we are?

Mike

The article is sad, but it doesn't mean much without providing numbers. How often does this happen? After reading this article I am no more informed than I was before.

Piet DuMond

This is ridiculous. Mayor Rocky Anderson did more to promote prejudice than anybody in Salt Lake City. I was repeatedly verbally abused while walking to work just because I was wearing a suit and looked like a Mormon. Diversity must work both ways.

This article is probably just propaganda written by someone with an agenda.

baloney

i doubt the man was evicted for being gay because how could the landlord know that he was? he was most likely evicted for portraying to be gay, therefore exposing sexual conduct which the landlord has a right to not allow. when he portrayed himself as gay, he desribed what he does in his bedroom, and the landlord did not necessarly evict him because he was gay, but because he wanted to expose sexual conduct. it would be the same as him evicting a woaman who talked to everyone about what she does for pleasure. what she does is her business, but when she starts exposing it, than the landlord has the right to regulate it.

and to mike, you're right. they don't quote the numbers because as you will find, this is an isolated incident. and as i said, not discrmination on the person, but the person's conduct, and the landlord has the right to decide what kind of conduct he thinks is appropriate on his property.

Auntbee

Reversed discrimination. I moved back to UT from CA because I could not get any type of office job (city, state, fed, etc) that did not require Spanish. There now seem to be more job ads in UT that require bi-lingual. This is wrong in so many ways!!!

There's A Reason For This!

Most of those discriminated against deserve it. First they want something others have without putting forth the effort to attain it, and secondly when they are given these rights most of them then want to make others accept their funky lifestyles and continue down the discimination and welfare path to complete destruction. They don't in most cases change and become productive citizens that contibute to our society, but then still wanting more gifts and handouts for their survival. I don't get it, or their mindsets period!

@Piet

"This article is probably just propaganda written by someone with an agenda."

Yeah because we all know that the Dnews has a liberal, anti-mormon agenda to push *rolls eyes*

@baloney

"i doubt the man was evicted for being gay because how could the landlord know that he was? he was most likely evicted for portraying to be gay, therefore exposing sexual conduct which the landlord has a right to not allow. "

If I am renting from a BUSINESS (for argument's sake lets say a place renting 5 or more units) I have a right to not be discriminated against for who I love/hold hands with/bring home after work, etc. As long as I can pay my rent and follow all other clauses in the contract I should be able to avoid being kicked out of where I live. Private citizens renting out basements or whatever would still be able to kick people out for ANY reason, but BUSINESSES should not be allowed to discriminate.

@Auntbee

It is not reverse discrimination for a company to not hire you because you do not have the skill set (ie speak spanish) to interact with their customers to maximize their profits.

Hiring bi-lingual speakers is not "reverse discrimination" it's simply a smart business practice.

tacoma

the state is just as bad as any one else with the handy cap and elderly They are closing off the forest roads to just horse and walking so if you have a disabilty you can't go enjoy the mountain any more.

@There's a reason

"Most of those discriminated against deserve it. First they want something others have without putting forth the effort to attain it,"

I pay my rent on time, EVERY time. I have one of the cleanest units in the entire complex. I fulfill EVERY clause in my lease, and am very respectful toward the property and other tenants. How then does my being gay make me "deserving" of being discriminated against and kicked out of my apartment?

Your comment is insulting.

sad comments

way to underscore the need for such a law people, I really hope those spewing your hate filled garbage on this thread are not representative of the way people in the state of Utah or Salt Lake City think.

huh

re: sad comment
lets paraphrase 'I am tolerant and anyone who disagrees is a bigot'

Not buying your guilt trip

This effort by Salt Lake City is redundant (to state and federal law) and politically motivated (it looks pretty wihtout actually doing much) with no real change or importance (except bypassing the politics of state law to include sexual behavior).

I agree with Piet: Rocky Anderson was the most racist, sexist, and religiously bigoted person ever to hold public office in Salt Lake City - and he did it all in the name of tolerance; So as a SLC resident, I have a right to be skeptical of this current initiative.

@huh

So someone pointing out that your views are bigoted is bigoted how exactly? are you getting kicked out of your home, losing you job, being threatned with physical violance? nice try but you are a bigot and trying to play the victim role just is not going to fly.
