No Its Just Football | 6:06 a.m. July 15, 2009
"Anytime you put that 'Y' on your helmet and go out to play, you're representing the school. Not only the school, but the Church as well," Tyler said. "When we play football, we're not just playing football. We're trying to accomplish something much greater.

--------------------

What are you trying to do, preach while on the field? No??? And since your not overseas fighting a war then its only football. Just stick to playing football, off the field fine but on the field its only a game.

I wonder if Norther Dame players try to "accomplish something much greater" other then playing a game when they put on their helmets.

I loved the fact that he was a rebel for BYU, I even enjoyed watching him play (although I'm not a BYU fan). The guy was like rubber when he made his catches, sounds like the rubber has turned to flubber but I wish him well.

"I don't think you can fully understand unless you actually play and see how hard that is to go undefeated,"

True, and Utah was good enough to do it twice in 5 years: 2004 and 2008.

Too bad that's no longer the criteria to win a national title otherwise Ball State was on the verge having one last year.

It's great to hear from you, Koz. You were my favorite player to watch on that unforgettable team. Go for it Tyler!
Just-be-"Koz" | 7:09 a.m. July 15, 2009
Thanks for the story. Kozlowski was my favorite member of the football team while he was there. In third grade when we'd play tackle football at recess I was always #7, lined up wide. Seeing Tyler follow in his footsteps brought back fond memories of the Glory Days (round one) of McMahon, Bosco, Sikahema, Bellini, and Kozlowski.

I absolutely hate BYU football, but I always respected GK on the field. He was a fantastic player - maybe the most dangerous receiver in BYU history when he was healthy (on and off the field). I think that had he not been injured early in the following year, the Y had a legitimate shot of winning all of their games that year too.

Hope Glen reads thesse messages. I went BYU and knew Glen and David Mills. I knew him when he started to turn his life around. He was a very intense guy. We have lost touch over the years and it is great to hear he is doing so well. I enjoyed watching him play at BYU and for the Bears. I enjoy watching his son now and hope he keeps up the family tradition at BYU. Best of luck to you and your family Glen.

I remember the '84 season. I was a freshman at the Y that year. It was the most wonderful experience. I remember the talk about maybe playing in another bowl game other than the Holiday Bowl, but I'm glad we didn't. Michigan proved to be a tough enough opponent to win the national championship. They were better than their record. They only lost 1 game the next year, and we beat Washington the next year too. That just proves we were the #1 team in the country. Yoot fans will say we didn't deserve it, but we'll always have it.

We're #1, We're #1, We're #1, We're #1, We're #1, and U aren't.

We'll win another NC before Jake Heaps graduates, and U won't.

We won 2 of the last 3, and U didn't.

We are better than U. Rise and Shout the Cougars are out!

HA HA HA HA HA HA!

And Harline is still open!

How old are these guys? Does anyone really remember 1984? You would have to at least be 35 years old to say you remember this. I hope I'm not still reading the DNews when I'm 35.
recalling Koz | 9:16 a.m. July 15, 2009
I remember the Koz and the great 1984 season. I've always wondered what happend to GK and Julie after the Bears era. I'm so glad to hear about his family and I'm excited to watch Tyler. I also sent 4 sons on missions and I know the joy of that accomplishment. Good luck to the Koz family in the future.

Man,

I was about to write something nice about BYU until I read the BYU Fan comment.

Too bad there are lame fans on both teams.

Football is a fun sport to play and watch. And Tyler K is right when he says that he is representing the church as well. I wish the BYU fans were that aware.

Both teams represent our state and it would be nice if we both played with class and won.

It really is no wonder that ultimate fighting is so popular in provo. Bunch of silly wannabe tough guys. Nice job.

I am 83 yrs old and have been a BYU fan for eones due to the fact I've had 7 kids graduate there. 84 was a great year for BYU football. I remember being in Yelowstone Park and listening to the Y beat Pitt in the first game of the season and thought then maybe they could win it all and they did. I loved to watch Glen and the others play. Good luck Cougars...
BYU fan | 9:34 a.m. July 15, 2009
No wonder Utah hates us. This is ridiculous and embarrassing.

You won't have time when you're 35, boy. With a degree from the U. you'll spend all your time pumping gas and washing windows to pay your trailer mortgage.
Bill from South Dakota | 9:38 a.m. July 15, 2009
Thanks for the articles on members of the '84 team. I was in the Incomparable Cougar Marching Band and enjoyed the entire season. I'm glad to see that Koz is doing well. BYU is a great school and I love BYU football. Let's not let the rivalry with Utah get out of hand though. Life is bigger than the gridiron.
Despite blowing out his knee | 9:44 a.m. July 15, 2009
twice his senior Koz was still considered one of the best wide receivers in college football history. At one time he caught passes in something like 37 consecutive games. He was a legit player and despite his knee injuries played in the NFL for eight seasons. I believe without those injuries he would have been one of the great ones in the pros. Can anyone remember the pass in 1984 he caught against Utah between three Utah defenders. I remember the Ute faithful all rising up because they were certain they had intercepted the ball only to find out that somehow, some way he ended up with it. Koz was a character and a great player and though he didn't make a great pro he was definitely one of the best college receivers of all time.
Re: Ute | 9:49 a.m. July 15, 2009
My sentiments exactly.
A BYU fan.
MWC Fan | 10:29 a.m. July 15, 2009
Unfortunately I've been reading these articles the past week... I have to say that I am thoroughly embarrassed for the cougars while these are being written. It's almost as if there's nothing better to say about BYU and their program at the moment. Sure, Utah is getting all the national hype with 2 BCS Busting Seasons in 5 years... But BYU coming out with these set of articles is ridiculous and humiliating. And to the cougar fan that wrote at 7:53am... Wow. If you were a freshman in '84 that would make you over 40 years old now... I am embarrassed for any 40 year old that still talks like he's arguing over a kickball game. National Championship? Have you been watching college football for the past 10 years? Mid-Majors don't make National Championships. Ridiculous comments today folks. Get some class.

Thanks for the laugh. The best one all day!
Koz, Thanks for the good memories at BYU, Bears, WGN, Temple, Sacrament mtg, etc. Way to go!

It must have been a difficult thing to watch BYU's long, slow slide into mediocrity after winning the national championship in 1984.
T | 11:11 a.m. July 15, 2009
Why is it that Ute Fans have nothing better to do than get on here and rip on BYU? Apparently there aren't enough success or happy stories for Ute fans to share with each other.
Life is about change | 11:24 a.m. July 15, 2009
I love Utah football, but I love the LDS church more. A few silly fans can ruin it for both sides. I love to see the change and the good that young people can do on missions. Good to see the change is Mr. K. I still hate to see the 6 shooters. Class act Koz....
Nice Story | 11:36 a.m. July 15, 2009
I remember '84 like it was yesterday, I was 3 and BYU was on top of the world. I intensely watched every game that season, Koz you wiley son of a gun, you're antics were unprecedented. Crazy Cougars won every dang contest they played in. Pandemonium folks, they have continued to get better every season. Koz, stand up and bow, you truly are an American Idol in Provo during the mid 80's
Not a BYU fan or a Utah fan | 11:45 a.m. July 15, 2009
Ok Utah fans, years from now don't you dare talk about the year you guys beat Alabama in the Sugar Bowl or the year you crushed Pitt in Arizona to go undefeated. Don't you dare talk about the awesome undefeated seasons you experianced. You are only allowed to talk about it within a 3 year time limit. As they say at USC just because one of our national titles is in 1930 that doesn't mean it didn't happen. talk about jealous haters some of you Utah fans have no class.
Tom in CA - Re: Ernest T | 11:51 a.m. July 15, 2009
After BYU became National Champions a rational thinker might conclude there is only one way to "slide" - it usually is not UP. Actually for you, Ernest T., the difficult thing has been for U to never see your utes be where BYU has been. Any prediction on this year's 2009 Holy War score??
Eric | 12:42 p.m. July 15, 2009
Yawn ... you cared enough to read it. My sister Ph.d went to school with a friend. Who was baptized by Koz... when he was working on 1 leg knee surgery. Leon White was there too. Thanks for lots of memories..7..
BYU haters..... | 1:09 p.m. July 15, 2009
A couple of things:

First, you need to understand that a NC isn't something you do one year and forget the next. Just like BYU won one in '84, ya'll will be talking about your 2 BCS busting years until your grave so shut your hypocritical yappers.

Secondly, it's pathetic that you even pretend to look down on BYU and their past accomplishments in the 80's and 90's. BYU was the only college in the WAC and then the MWC that was commanding ANY respect from colleges around the nation. The reason the BCS was inducted WAS because BYU won the NC. If it wasn't for them, your two undefeated years wouldn't have even amounted to a blip on a radar screen to the college football world. You owe ANY credibility you have now, mostly to BYU of the 80's and then McBride stepping in for the 90's to start any kind of a program for your sorry football program.

I am sick to death of the haters commenting on here. Quit reading the stories. Go back to your pizza deliveries and don't read anymore.

re: MWC Fan  | 1:17 p.m. July 15, 2009
BYU isn't pushing out these articles, it's Deseret News, and the reason they're doing it is because this is the 25 year anniversary of the 1984 championship (you did read that little editor's note at the beginning of these articles, didn't you?). It's called an anniversary piece. Every news organization in the world does them for significant events that happened in that region's history. And DN or the Trib will probably do the same thing for the 10th., 15th., 20th., and 25th. year anniversaries of the Utes' BCS bustin' seasons. In the meantime, chill down slightly.
Re: BYU haters.... | 1:17 p.m. July 15, 2009
Amen. I was going to add that back in the 80's and most of the 90's BYU WAS considered by the rest of the nation as Utah's univerisity. Credit McBride for bringing credibility to the U's program later on, but until him, the Utes weren't talked about anywhere outside their own campus. It used to be that the Utes ONLY cared about beating BYU because of the rivalry and that made their season. They have risen above that now as a program and I can give respect to the team they have become in the new millenium. But don't ever buy into the little brother B.S. because had the Cougars not paved the road for the Utes, they wouldn't be considered anything more than a Boise State South. I'm not insulting the team by saying that, I'm simply saying they would be viewed like the nation views Boise today. They have to earn respect. The Utes team has been great the last decade and arguably were deserving of the NC last season. Hate on the BCS for that but keep BYU out of the hate. They don't deserve it.
To byu fan  | 1:19 p.m. July 15, 2009
You're post is one of the lamest things I've ever read. No, you're not #1. Once a very long time ago your team was considered to be #1. Even though your strength of schedule that year was ranked # 84. Kind of like being proud that your first kiss was with your sister, something BYU fans know a lot about.

Oh Hey Max the UTE secondary is still open

25 years from now the Utes can talk about the time they beat Alabama in the Sugar Bowl and were ranked #2......hahaha.

Like it or not, the 1984 National Champ trophy resides in Provo, and always will.

We have a national championship, AND the best recruiting class in the MWC for 2010. What do you ewet fans have to say about that? Where's your title? Who are your new recruits? Your pathetic. Nobody really knows who Utah is. We're the most nationally recognized and respected non-BCS program, and have been for decades.

Enter to learn, go fourth and 18. Ha ha ha!

Gooooooooooo Cougarrrrrrrrrrrrs!
Re: Ernest T. bASS | 2:17 p.m. July 15, 2009
Medicority after 84....i guess if you consider 12 Conference Championships since then...compared to the Utes meager 5. And who's mediocre???

Since BYU and Utah both joined the WAC in 1962 and then the MWC in 2000, BYU has won 24 conference championships...Utah a mere 6. And you want to talk about mediocre programs. 2 conference championships between 1964-1995. Yeah, the Utes have had a great couple of years...in 2004 and 2008, but what about 2005-2007...talk about mediocre. How many 10+ win seasons do you have at the U?? A mere 4....BYU is about to have 4 in a row. And which program has a history of mediocrity??
Yrag Notyalc | 2:17 p.m. July 15, 2009
Folks....or at least most of you folks, ya just DON'T get it!!! There will always be a BYU and Utah thing! Don't try to stop it. Don't argue against it or for it because you really have NO say in this one! IT WILL REMAIN THE MOST BITTER RIVALRY in all college sports......AND IT AIN'T JUST FOOTBALL!! And it AIN'T GOIN' AWAY! AND I MEAN A-I-N-'-T!!!! Who would want it to, Enoch??
TO soon to be  | 2:22 p.m. July 15, 2009
The only thing pathetic is your post. Its funny how the only time your hear about how good BYU is is preseason. We all know what happens during the season. How is your Quest going, still working on that are you? Everyone knows who the UTES are, only BYU fans or 70 year olds know BYU. How can you be the most respected non BCS team when you've never cracked it, you can barely win the Vegas bowl. Boise is more well known than BYU. The only thing BYU is known for is stealing a NC by beating crap teams.
Max Hall 6 interceptions, HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA

I'm insecure about myself and my team, so I came on here to rip on BYU. I personally have no athletic prowess or individual accomplishments, but I'm qualified to rip on D1 athletes. I choose to selectively cite statistics and wins and forget about my rivals major accomplishments. Until Alabama, we never had a marquee win to hang our hat on so we have to rip on our rival to again, make up for our major insecurities. I rip on BYU fan's that are jealous of the BCS, which is Ironic because I'm jealous I didn't get accepted to BYU. I cover it up by saying who would want to live in Provo and go to BYU? But secretly I am embarrassed that I couldn't cut it. I now am a full fledged member of the muss, I have the obligatory goatee and muss t-shirt and I'm a real tough guy as long as my other insecure buddies are with me. Get me alone and I'll wet myself. I am a utah man.

Maybe for the 25th anniversary BYU can commemorate the event by beating Oklahoma in September and help Barry Switzer eat some crow. One of the many enjoyable experiences of Utah's win over Alabama in the Sugar Bowl in January was Switzer having to eat his words from the beginning of the broadcast. Even at halftime, he was too stubborn to admit that Utah was clearly kicking the tar out of the Crimson Tide.
Old Cougar | 2:26 p.m. July 15, 2009
Yep... I'm one of the guys that was there for the 1984 national championship. It was great. I still read the D-News and I still think the Cougars have a great football program. A national championship is the pinnacle for any program. The Cougars may never win another one... but we still have one more than the Utes.

I'm sure I'll reminisce over the 1984 season in another 40 years if I'm still around. Hopefully, we'll have another national championship to remember too. Hopefully the Utes have one to remember also. The Utes keep bringing up 2004 and 2008. Those were great seasons... the best you've had. It's good to be proud of them. But don't try to diminish what the Cougars did just because the Utes have never won a national championship. It's still a greater accomplishment than being Sugar bowl champions. I mean, I could go on and on about great BYU seasons... like the one where we won 14 games and got the BCS talk rolling again. Are there any other 14 win teams that have never been invited to a major new years day bowl?
re: To byu fan | 2:30 p.m. July 15, 2009
"Once a very long time ago your team was considered to be #1. Even though your strength of schedule that year was ranked # 84."

You give them too much credit. In 1984, the tdS' strength of schedule was ranked 104th out of 108. And look at all the "miracle/comeback" victories they needed to put away mediocre competition.

Air Force was the ONLY team to have notched 8 wins, and one of those wins was vs. Northern Colorado. Hawai'i won 7 games; 2 of which came via Long Beach St. and Pacific. With 13 opponents for the '84 season, 11 had 6 or fewer wins.

Oh how I enjoy singing church hymns during timeouts. Nothing beats jumping out of our seats to the tune of Popcorn Popping on the Apricot Tree. Golly how I look forward to parting my hair neatly to the side and bending the rules by wearing my knee length shorts just above the knee. I even enjoyed waving to the nice Ute fans at RES last year knowing they were going to the sugar bowl and us to OUR vegas bowl, heck we even won. But what I love the best is harkining back to the days of yore (84). Hey BYU fans Try living in this decade.
re: re: to BYU Fan | 2:45 p.m. July 15, 2009
Byu Played the schedule it had. It had Pitt (on the road) who at the time was #3, it beat Michigan, who earlier in the season was Ranked #2. Washington claimed that they got screwed out of the title, but didn't accept the invite to play in the Holiday bowl against BYU. the following year, BYU played Washington and worked them over 31-3... PS 1984 championship team was a rebuilding year b/c they had lost Steve Young and many veterans, they had a great series of seasons leading up to and after the N.Championship. BYU played the hand it was dealt and had zero losses. Enough said. Grow up.

"Washington claimed that they got screwed out of the title,...the following year, BYU played Washington and worked them over 31-3..."

I love how zoobs like to cling to their 31-3 victory over Washington in '85 as some sort of evidence '84 was authentic. Especially the following has been pointed out over and over ad nauseum: THE '85 COUGARS PROVIDED UTEP THEIR ONLY WIN OF THE SEASON!

Somehow, to zoobies, beating the Huskies in '85 validates '84, but losing to UTEP that same year doesn't prove anything. That's called good-old-fashioned-zoobie-logic.

Point of Order: The '84 UWa team was 11-1; the '85 UWa. team was 7-5. Different teams. The '84 tdS squad was 13-0; in '85, they were 11-3. THREE losses; different teams.

Incidently, 2 of those 3 losses came vs opponents with > 9 FBS teams. THIS is what happens when the tdS plays GOOD teams rather than mediocre ones.
87 BYU | 4:41 p.m. July 15, 2009
I was there and went to all the home games. Thanks for the wonderful memories KOZ.
re:....to BYU Fan | 2:45 | 5:00 p.m. July 15, 2009
First, I’d like to correct a previous statement:

In my last post, I said, “Incidently, 2 of those 3 losses came vs opponents with > 9 FBS teams.” What I MEANT to say was “Incidently, 2 of those 2 losses came vs opponents with > 9 FBS WINS.”

Now, on to my next point:

You said:

"PS 1984 championship team was a rebuilding year b/c they had lost Steve Young and many veterans, they had a great series of seasons leading up to and after the N.Championship."

I'm glad you pointed that out. Since '84 was your "rebuilding year", then by your own admission, 1985, with a Senior QB, SHOULD have been a better year. But, as I already pointed out, you actually played 2 good teams that year. And lost to both of them. And UTEP.

Since 1985, the tdS has had 9 10+ win seasons, but how did they get those 10 wins? If we were to classify a "solid opponent" as a BCS team > 8 FBS wins, or a non-BCS team that finished the season ranked, the tdS' record, since '85, would be 4-12.

Conclusion: By soft scheduling.

This message board is hilarious. As a grad of both universities my favorite posts are by the trolls. I highly doubt Cougarfan 7:53am is a BYU fan. Ute Fan and BYU fan's posts are pure comedy and the gas pumping and quest digs are just classic. Here's my trolling for the day:

BYU Fan: I just want to congratulate Coach Whittingham on finally catching up to Gary Crowton's four year record for MWC titles and ten win seasons. Of course, crowton was fired after those four years and Whitt got a raise...no wait crouton actually "resigned."

Ute Fan: It's kind of sad how BYU has choaked in every big game since I was in diapers. Going back 25 years to talk smack almost makes me feel bad for the zoobies...almost.

I'm so conflicted I can't stand it. Oh wait...I'm really just a troll. Come do your worste defenders of the faith.

Kozlowski was an amazing receiver. If you are a college football fan you had to love to watch Koz make some of those crazy catches. I loved watching McMahon play also. Interesting they both ended up in Chicago. It is shame that the writer tries to make a connection between the two teams because Koz's son is on this team. Seems a little "propoganda-ish". Same with the "band of brothers" title.

It is unfortunate the amount of illogical hate associated with some of these blogs too.
