wow...

what a loss..my prayers go out to you...

Here comes the taxes

Will our state ever learn that harboring illegal aliens in Utah is detrimental to any growth, this year or in several years.

The state hasn't learned yet that illegals and their employers don't pay income taxes or other income related taxes.

Oh, I forget, our legislators ARE the employers of illegals and have to keep them close at hand to keep wages down on the american workers so our economy can't recover.

really

It really amazes me what someone in real estate knows. They try to paint a picture that they know something and don't. I live, breathe and die in the construction business. There are NO homes being built, less than in the 80's, yet our population has grown, now we build apartment time projects that we call homes, yet they are gloried apartments. Land prices are to high, developers know it, land owners know it, real estate companies have gotten fat for doing nothing but writing up paper and having someone sign it when they really couldn't afford it. We have had cities put restriction on the size of homes in their cities, sq. footage, type etc., and now look at the forecloser rates in Utah. Guys it is not pretty and us that lease building, try hard to employee people that work with their hands, don't drive fancy cars, golf all day...it is way harder out there and we are all making less money and working twice as hard as we were three years ago. Next time D news ask someone that lives in it, not someone that thinks they live in it.

Obama

If you voted for Obama and his administration, and you lost your job, I really don't feel sorry for you.

The illegals

are only doing jobs that us americans wont do, right? That line of crap makes my blood boil.

to: 7:30 poster "blood-boiler"

So have you applied for a part-time job with a hotel cleaning toilets?

Bro Chuck's Rant n Rave

Cuz of Hatch?. The GOP Party has become the party that vilifies anyone who dares to disagrees with their narrow view of the world, appeals to the the basest of human nature, and then wraps it up in the American flag and calls it patriotism. Like Brittney Spears, the G.O.P. is a political party whose star is rapidly fading; both are getting a bit long in the tooth, and both are becoming an embarrassment to other's as well as themselves, the GOP punked us all. But, like Brittney, the G.O.P. will always have a VERY small emotionally shallow group of followers who will support it even when it embarrasses itself over and over again. The few remaining followers of Brittney Spears and the G.O.P. are the "Peter Pans" of the world who never got past adolescence and who never will grow up. They will go on supporting their "idol" no matter how ridiculous the idol acts. But, like Brittney, the G.O.P. will always have a VERY small emotionally shallow group of followers who will support it even when it embarrasses itself over and over again. ALL BECAUSE OF Hatch.

@ The Illegals

What do you do for a living?

RE: Bro Chuck

Hey Bro Chuck, why don't you have your Democrats come fix Utah like they did California? LOL!!!

Re: Bro Chuck

Bro Chuck has a point. The GOP has become a statewide and national embarassment. What has happened to Hatch? He used to seem so level-headed and articulate. Now he is better known for cranking out corny music and directing his political efforts towards non-issues (e.g, BCS). I'm pretty sure Britney is a Republican.

Utah

Everyone jump off the USS Utah while you have a chance. The whole economy was based on the construction and mortgage industries.

Name one other Utah-based industry that will keep the state viable. MLMs?

huh

Broi Chuck talks about GOP rant and rave. Obviously he has never paid attention to the intolerant left. Ann Coulter is mild compared to Maureen Downd et al. When conservatives are over the top they are vilified by the mainstream press, but when liberals are bigots - they get a pulitzer prize. Which is why the left scares me more.

Another example of left wing hypocrisy.

BTW; the next year may be bad for Utah financially - but we are still better off than most states - a fact that was not highlighted.

Ignorant

I've never read such ignorant rants.

First of all, my cousin who is a foundation contractor, says construction is picking up.

Second, name another industry besides housing in Utah? Let's see, who have high-tech companies which employ anywhere from tens to thousands. Get an education, and then go job hunt.

"Here comes the taxes?" Take an English class before you write that resume. It is "here COME the taxes," and lets hope they aren't coming, because higher tax rates actually decrease tax revenue by taking money out of the economy. Higher tax rates leave people with less to spend, less to spend means lower sales, lower salaries, and surprise! Lower taxes. Good for Mayor Coroon of Salt Lake County.

The title of the article is poorly written. The article says things will continue to be bad, but they aren't going to decline further, they will just recover slowly.

"Illegals" aren't the cause of all bad things, folks, I'm sorry to say. Greed, laziness, "gimmee, gimmee, gimmee" attitudes toward government are. We can't really blame the legislators for spending too much when everyone has their hand out, can we?

To Brother Chuck

Brittany, GOP, Hatch, used all in one sentence? Bro Chuck, what have you been smoking? It was commical reading however.

@ here come the taxes

It's not the illegals that are the problem, it's all the white Mormons who have 8 kids. Since education is our state's largest expense, most of us get away with paying almost nothing to educate all our kids. Single home owners pay just as much as people with 12 kids towards education. How does that work?
We need to offset the costs of education by charging additional taxes to those who have more than 4 kids (I would say 2 kids but this is Utah not California where people typically don't have more than 2 kids). So the more kids I have, the more taxes from everyone else have to cover my family. Why should people with big families get something for nothing?

Non-Issues BCS?

Some people can be so ignorant. The BCS is a billion dollar industry and can mean millions & millions of dollars for the University of Utah & BYU. A lot of the money the football programs make go to fund education. But I guess people don't value education anymore either. Get some common sense and you will realize the BCS argument is not a waste of time.

@Obama

People aren't losing their jobs right now because of the Obama Adminstration. They are losing their jobs because trillions of dollars of "wealth" evaporated from 401ks, pensions, and home equity when CDOs (collateralized debt obligations), MBS' (mortgage backed securities), and CDS (credit default swaps) took down wall street and goliath insurance companies (that rated those bundled mortgages with AAA).

It's economic, not political. But if you really need it to be political, which it sounds like you do for whatever reason, then you should probably face the reality that the republican anthem of "deregulate!" combined with the buzz word "PROSPER!" that made this mess 8 years ago. Should we blame Bush? Not really. But if these hacks had not been left to their own devices, they would not have been so free to derail our entire economy.

Obama was nowhere near Wall Street or the White House when this mess started.

I understand how some people need everything to be Obama's fault (or the Demos) but sometimes, it's everyone's fault. Lay off the politics.

We are all in this

The political banter is childish, no democrat nor republican could have deterred or lessened this crash. Let's face it folks the economic downturn was a longtime coming. Greed, selfishness, scape goating... are not confined to political boundaries but they were paramount in our economic downfall.

Illegals?

Yeah, everything's their fault. They loused around trying to squeeze the word "stainless" into any sentence possible, skimming their livelihood off of others' transactions and made six figures doing it and only had to go to a three week class to get the license.

Wait. Those were the Realtors. My bad.

Iggy speaks the truth

It is rebounding, albeit very slowly.

Residential developements are showing signs of life, and there's plenty of non-residential construction going on. Just drive around Salt Lake County and count the cranes.

Unfortunately, many many small businesses did not survive the downturn, and their owners and employees were assimilated by big businesses out of necessity.

For myself, business is not what it was pre-2009, though a small fraction of customers have begun to return. New calls are down by a staggering amount, still, however.
