BYU. 1984 National Champions.

Despite Ute fans' whining, nothing more needs to be said or can be said.

Well done, Cougs, well done.

Of course the 1984 season started the ball rolling for the creation of the BCS. How it galled the elite to see BYU awarded the championship. Since they cannot control the outcome of individual games they have taken control over who plays in the games.

I do love watching the Cougars loose, but 1984 was an exception.

Bad bad bad.

Besides being a money grab for the "major" conferences, they also started the BSC for this very purpose...to keep schools like BYU or other schools from winning a national championship.

It may be nit picking but Chow left the year before Crowton came. Reynolds was the OC in 2000, Lavell's last season.
Chow | 9:46 a.m. July 13, 2009
Chow was told he would not be chosen as the next head coach and that is why he left. Even though there was a year in-between.
reply:Chow | 11:08 a.m. July 13, 2009
you have to have certain standards that Chow didnt meet, since it is a church school, you have to be interviewed like you would for the temple, so that could possibly be a reason he didnt' make it.

"That Pitt team was horrible | 8:06 a.m. July 13, 2009 - Bad bad bad."

Let me guess. Even worse than the 2008 Michagan team was, right?....

Reference the 11:08 comment. So Chow is not LDS? Didn't know that.

We drove up to that game from Virginia. Boscoe was such a class individual. He came to us in the end zone seating to acknowledge the supporters and thank us for being there. It was a blast. What is funny is the BYU team and Oklahoma (Barry whiner Switzer) had Pitt and Baylor as common opponents. OU beat Pitt a little better than we did and the Pitt coach said we were comparable enough to be ranked 1 and 1A respectively in the polls. However we both played Batlor and unlike OU, we creamed Baylor. Their coach said the game was over after 5-10 minutes with BYU but they felt competitive with BYU all day.
2 Close ones 4 BYU | 12:57 p.m. July 13, 2009
Good article and same for story on Hawaii. The next time the Yners start complaining about Utah's close wins last years they can refer back to the Pitt and Hawaii games. ANY great season has a couple of close calls. BTW - Best of luck to the Men who play for BYU against Oklahoma - let the little children AKA Yners continue to post. In MODERN football (post 1990) BYU has been a joke.
I am not saying he isn't LDS, just because your LDS doesn't mean to you still live the standards that the church wants you too, that's all I am saying, and that is just speculation, he may have really been just turned down for it, he is a great coach.

To That Pitt team was horrible,
That Pitt team was ranked #2 or #3 in the preseason poll. BYU beat them at or near Pitt's home field in the 1st game of the year for both teams. Pitt had a super-hyped lineman (I believe that his name was Bill Golic) that BYU manhandled all day long. Pitt's season went downhill AFTER they lost to a team that most everyone thought they should beat. BYU beating Pitt was a good win!
coot20 | 2:52 p.m. July 13, 2009
If I remember correctly Pitt was ranked #2 prior to that first game. Pitt was not that bad of team. The pitt win was one of BYUs great wins. It set the stage.....
paulb | 5:06 p.m. July 13, 2009
not to take away from the Coug's, but Pitt only got 3 wins this year.
Hometown blinders on | 6:38 p.m. July 13, 2009
You need to look at records at the end of the year to really judge the quality of the wins. Pitt only had three wins all year. Michigan was only the third or fourth best team in the Big 10. BYU barely beat both. They also had close wins against so-so WAC teams. Give them credit for being scrappy and resilient and winning the games they played, but they did not, and do not, deserve to be called National Champions. On a side note, I believe there has yet to be a true national champion in college football. We've had bowl champions and plenty of them. Until there is a playoff with at least 8 teams, I don't see how anyone can claim a national championship.
RE: paulb | 6:39 p.m. July 13, 2009
Not to take away from ther Ute's, but wasn't it a pitt team Utah beat in a bowl game a few years ago,

and the utes thought they were so great.

Regardless of what the Yewts have to offer(or cry about)about the Cougars National Championship team of 1984 has always distinquished the Brigham Young program over ANYTHING the utes claim...including their two BCS wins....

And IF; BYU's championship in '84 is
"an unofficial" national championship than all the other national championships by SC, Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, and others are all as "unofficial" as the Cougars.

And I would like to note that despite the utes dominance over BYU in the 20's, 30's, 40's, 50's and 60's the yewts have NO "unoffical' championship to claim in college football...only their 'BCS' wins in a largely restricted group of teams that allow limited access to the current bowl games that host BCS games....

If you want to pick apart BYU on playing Michigan in the HB...at least the Wolverines that played the Y in 1984 had a winning record, unlike the UofM team that had a losing record and didn't qualify for a bowl in '08...we defeated the storied program (UofM)before Utah did...and we beat a Bo Schembechler led team.....you didn't.

re: coot20 | 7:37 p.m. July 13, 2009
Pitt was ranked #3 in the preseason; not #2. But preseason rankings are often inaccurate. Since that Pitt team won only 3 games that year, it's clear they were overrated.

So was the tdS all season long.
green derby | 8:20 p.m. July 13, 2009
To become #2 or #3 in the nation you have to have quality players. There is no getting around it. Pittburgh had its heart ripped out by what they tought was a far inferior team. With the national championship no longer within reach they weren't able to play up to their expected level. BYU beat them when they probably played their best game.

"we defeated the storied program (UofM)before Utah did...and we beat a Bo Schembechler led team.....you didn't."

We defeated a 12-1 Saban-led SEC team (Alabama) in OUR bowl game. You didn't. No matter how you want to spin it, our accomplishment was the most noteworthy.

"Not to take away from ther Ute's, but wasn't it a pitt team Utah beat in a bowl game a few years ago,

and the utes thought they were so great."

The Pitt team you beat didn't qualify for a bowl game, winning only 3 games all season. The Pitt team WE beat was the Big East Champion, and finished their season ranked #25 after losing to the Utes in a BCS Bowl. No comparison here. Once again, our accomplishment was considerably more noteworthy.

And finally...48-24. SCOREBOARD!

Ha ha ha ha!

GO UTES!!!
RE:@ 6:39 and @ 6:42  | 4:25 p.m. July 14, 2009
Always with the come backs........as if beating Michigan(08), Pitt(04), or Alabama(09) last year resulted in a national championship for the (u)tes
>>>HaHaHa

You putred punks will always think of yourselves as the better program despite what BYU has done.

Regardless of what Coack K has done for the program at Utah or what Urban did in 2004, none of 'THEIR' accomplishments even resulted in an UNOFFICIAL NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP.....

Your BCS victories mean nothing but two winsand a pile of money....and a Number (2) finish in the country. Sooooo What???

Can anyone at yew-tah say runnerup?????

Though BYU can STILL...be listed with the Oklahoma's, Michigan's, Ohio States, USC's, Washington's, Miami's, Penn States and so on......as Unofficial Championships......didn't hear anything in your throw back about the real purpose behind my blog....

I remember now, yeah we lost last year
(48-24)(you guys were the better team)but we have won two of the last three and we were the better team unless you want to say you were out-coached???

Honor...Spirit...Tradition...BYU Cougars!!!

Mendenhall was right when he called your games lifestyle victories......

Nothing will ever shut ute fans up.......

Beating them doesn't shut them up.....ute coaches have written the book on "A Thousand and One Excuses to Offer When Losing to BYU."

BYU has won the last two out of three and the majority of games since 1970. And if I'm wrong, pardon me but hasn't the Cougars had more top ten finishes in D-1 football? And it has only been twice in the storied history of Utah football that the utes finished in the top ten...and that didn't occur until the last five years??? How long have they been playing football anyway on the hill??? And before that how many top 25 finishes did they(the U)have in the nation?

And hasn't BYU been only one of eight teams to finish in the top 25 the last three years and and winn over 30 games in three years?

Why doesn't the DesNews clarify this???

Someones playing favorites????????

And if 'anonymous' can honestly define what happened to the utes last year and what BYU actually accomplished in 1984 why hasn't there been an article by the Deseret News exploring those issues?

"Regardless of what Coack K has done for the program at Utah or what Urban did in 2004, none of 'THEIR' accomplishments even resulted in an UNOFFICIAL NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP....."

Regardless of what it says on cougarboard.com, the 2008 Utes DID win a National Championship from Fanspoll. Fanspoll is a national media outlet whose champion is voted by the fans. Prior year National Champions include Auburn [2004], Texas [2005], Florida [2006], and LSU [2007]. Utah won the 2008 title, and the trophy has been sitting in our trophy case since last February. The Utes have National Title. And it's even OFFICIAL!

The tdS STILL do not have a BCS bowl; much less 2 of them. Edge: Utah (X2).

"You putred punks will always think of yourselves as the better program despite what BYU has done."

Nationwide, we ALREADY ARE recognized as the better program. When people think top mid-majors, they say UTAH, Boise St, TCU. Some even think of Fresno St. and Navy. But the "why?" are a bunch of irrelevant has-beens who can't win the big game nor come up with much to celebrate save one season 25 yrs ago.

Ha ha ha ha!

Fans National Championship??????

Like i said you pukes are full of excuses...

Someone is feeling sorry for your program...

There is nothing more offical that that cyrstal trophy that handed to the Gators....and to think I was actually proud of what the ute team accomplished against Bama.......you're arrogant and have never addressed what I have been trying to say all along...

Despite your recent success....your consistency lacks...aka...losing to to the likes of AF and UNLV in '07.....again it comes back to lifestyle...when you you guys are good...you are really good....but when you lose the easy games you have lots of excuses as to what went wrong........again....

No one gives a #a%m you won a plastic trophy with your name on it declaring the utes the fans choice...the media picked Florida over you in the official media poll...and from here on the media got it right....

Plastic Trophy Full of Excuses...
Will you defend that championship this year??? NO?

No??? Why? Because you lost all of your offense and the guys that mattered most on defense...

Would you have beat the Gators? No(lol) Oklahoma(Not Even)?
Bronco | 6:23 p.m. July 14, 2009
The better program????

If you guys are the better program then it based on bias....lets hate BYU and hope the gentile utes win out...either you love us or hate us....as for me and my Blue Brothers.....we'll bear the hate....let the hate cankor your souls until their blackened for
eternity......

Back to football...

Were you the better program in '06 and '07? When you lost to the Cougars two years in a row....

When we won two consceutive MW championships or what was your excuse....and this year, what will be your excuse?

Hoping for a Cougar meltdown....payback is coming!!!

And even if that payback is justby one point than your score, that will be fine by me and 65thousand Cougar fans...because your lifestyle victory won't exist...Life isn't about football victories as they teach at BYU....its about character and how you handle adversity in the face of something greater....the utes and their fans know nothing of character....it's about winning...

How sad........

We may lose the big game, but it is what comes of that our football players translate into something more that bcs money and trophies!
@ 4:46 | 10:03 p.m. July 14, 2009
"hasn't the Cougars had more top ten finishes in D-1 football? And it has only been twice in the storied history of Utah football that the utes finished in the top ten...and that didn't occur until the last five years???"

The tdS picked up those Top-10 finishes while a member of the WAC. Never have they finished that high as a member of the far more competitive MWC. Just like BSU cleaning up in a weak conference, the "why?" did so from the 70s thru the 90s.

In 1994 the Utes outplayed the "why?" into a #8 finish. That year, the Utes beat 3 ranked opponents in #16 CSU, #18 tdS, and #20 Ariz. Our '04 season, we beat 1 [Big East Champ #25 Pittsburgh], and our '08 season we notched 4 [#6 Alabama, #7 TCU, #18 Oregon St, #25 tdS]. In other words OUR Top-10 season were won DESPITE strong interconference play, ranked OOC opponents, and Big Bowl games.

Aside from your '96 season, NONE OF YOUR TOP-10 finishes came by way of anything less than a creampuff schedule. You only ran up stats on weak competition. That's your legacy.
