He was murdered by his mistress, not by terrorists while he was trying to save a child in danger.

If he had been faithful to his wife, he would still be alive.

Hero? Not in a sane world.

Barbra Oliver, Chicago

Tragic, end. Compassion for the wife & sons. Condolences to the remaining family members. The hard lesson here: Cheaters never win...

I'm sorry, but heroes should be at minimum a good family man, and I'm not sure an ongoing affair with a mistress qualifies....

Heroes

Heroes in America these days are strange and perverse. Is this what we have come to; idolizing Michael Jackson the pedifile or McNair the Adulterer. C'mon, we can do better than this. Maybe we need to review our core values, you know, our morals.

sorry ...

"friend says..." dang typos.

Demosthenes

A "hero" doesn't cheat on his wife.

Concerned parent

Just another example of the skewed world of professional sports...true examples of "heroism" can be found in the brave men and women fighting for our country-not some overpaid jock who now leaves a wife and children in his wake. His poor choices are what he will be remembered most for.

Not in a million years

A hero?!?!?!?

Not in your wildest dreams!

Great athlete? Sure.

Adulterer? Yep.

Adulterers dont' equte to "heroes".

"I'm sorry, but heroes should be at minimum a good family man, and I'm not sure an ongoing affair with a mistress qualifies.... " Republican lawmakers can't be heroes. :-) They have enriched our language with "wide Stance, a walk a long the Appalachian trail and and puling a Palin.

Here a man who would be alive if the had been a waiting period to buy a gun. We have one more victim of the NRA.

Heroes

Yes, times were different back then when we had real heroes.. like General Eisenhower who had an affair with his driver during the war, or Thomas Jefferson who had affairs with many women. The fact is that men with power seem to "have" women. It is a fact of life. I for one, wtill regard them as heroes.

This continues to be a very sad story. I cannot think of one redeeming or uplifting factor in this whole miserable episode. It's a tragedy for every single individual involved.

** "...the quarterback [Vince Young] drafted by Tennessee in 2006 to replace McNair remembered him as a father and mentor. Young said he felt selfish at times taking McNair away from his four sons to help him through his own life." **

This is wonderful for Vince Young. What a great memory to be able to carry with him.

Too bad McNair's own kids will have to live with such a different memory of their father. He apparently did not feel selfish for taking himself away from them and their mother; or for depriving a 20-year-old of her youth and all of its promise and opportunity.

I have to admit, I am swayed by the tone of these messages. But isn't it possible to be both a hero to some and a villian to others? I'd like to think that I have redeeming qualities even though I have failed miserably at some apsects of my life. I guess if those that judge McNair a villian for his trespasses, may do so if they are without sin. I won't be casting the first stone, however.

I am truly appalled by your comments. You are so quick to judge this man for an affair. All I have to say is will God be as hasty to judge you for your sins? 5,000 people gathered to say goodbye and mourn this loss, yet you can sit here and say he is not a “hero” because he cheated on his wife. Maybe he is a true hero because he is human, like all humans we all make mistakes. I will tell my children a good man died, if they ask about his affair, this will be my reply “No matter how great of a person you are, it takes one moment of weakness to make a mistake and change your life forever. Even good people can make horrible mistakes.” Shame on you, this is a religious news paper correct? I always felt religion would make you more companionate, really a shame at what speed you judge and slander.
