Pignanelli & Webb: Political speculation isn't taking a summer vacation

Chaffetz made it perfectly clear he was focusing on the US House, now and in 2010. That said, could he beat Bennett for U.S. Senate? Yes and in one vote at convention.
Bennett isn't going to get 40% at conventions anyway and so isn't going to be re-elected, no matter the money he spends, or if we get more people running against him.
At the State Convention, the Democrat party made it very clear they were backing Sam Granato for Senate, so neither Matheson or Corroon will run for Senate.
Again, Chaffetz made it perfectly clear he was focusing on the US House, now and in 2010. Just because he didn't slam the door on other options, doesn't mean he is planning on running for something else.
We have Bennett for 18 more months. He needs support and good ideas in the mean time. That doesn't mean I have to vote for him.

Mitt Romney endorses incumbent Republicans, but will change that endorsement if they lose the nominee. That is what he did with endorsing Chris Cannon, and then endorsing Jason Chaffetz when Cannon was out of the picture.
There are several republican candidates for Utah's 2010 US Senate race. One candidate actively promoted Mitt Romney, including helping with their fundraiser - Cherilyn Eagar. It highly likely that after Bob Bennett doesn't make it out of state convention next year, that Mitt Romney will be endorsing the nominee, Cherilyn Eagar.
