Who is paying for all this travel for the UVCC teams? Who is paying for all these scholarships? It is ridiculous that UVCC has been upgraded to "University" status in the first place, and even more ridiculous that they are actually spending all this money to try to compete at the Division I level.
UVU hasn't been UVCC since 1993. The school was known as UVCC only from 1987 to 1993--a period of 6 years and that changed 16 years ago, with the addition of bachelor's degrees and renaming to Utah Valley State College. With the addition of master's degrees in 2008, they received university status like WSU and SUU.
In the year that ended 30 June 2008, UVU reported $6,342,439 in athletics revenue and $6,275,175 in athletics expenses. This places them roughly on par with SUU and more than 4 times what Salt Lake Community College earns and spends and about twice what Dixie State earns and spends. UVU's athletics budget is about 70% of Weber State's at $8.85 million.
The then UVSC went Division I, because when they began exploring Division II, the NCAA imposed a moratorium on new Division II programs. At the time, UVSC had about 7000 upper division students and competition in the NJCAA no longer made sense. UVU has now completed a 7 year transition, successfully meeting the requirements each year and has been in compliance with Division I rules for years now.
You are, quit moaning and pay more taxes and fees.
They call that a conference? Sounds more like a joke to me.
Why does everyone care if they are a conference or Div 1, let them do whatever the flip they want.
Ummm because they are spending our money as taxpayers and students--not to mention they represent the city and community.
Couldn't they just compete in the 5A and keep it all in state.Think of the savings. It would be huge. And they might even be competitive.
