Lower rental rates

If the state would stop subsidizing rents in the rental markets maybe rents would come down to where people could afford them.

Rental rates are inflated to capture a large share of money from the state welfare system, another place to cut spending that is overlooked. Large complexes are making millions by over pricing and getting funds from government in subsidized housing.

I totally agree

Looking for apartments was awful in 2009. I graduated from the Provo scene and into rental housing in AF. I looked all over southern SL and northern UT counties. The rent was $800+ for a decent basement. This study needs to eliminate all the disgusting student housing that skews the real average downward. Remove the students and just count the working class, and the average is much higher. Too bad some very nice complexes have income restrictions. Thanks Utah taxpayers for keeping the cost high.

Bad news

The rental market in Salt Lake County is very difficult. A decent one-bedroom can run $800, and those of us on not-great incomes can't afford that. There are a few places for less money, but they are in high-crime areas of the valley. If you don't have two incomes, a person can't afford even a one-bedroom. Sad.
