Thanks to Senator Hatch for bringing this hearing to the Senate. The BCS is clearly out of bounds and only Congress can correct this. However, now that Senator Hatch has opened these hearings. Something needs to happen. It can't just be a bunch of posturing and then nothing happens. It seems to me that the anti-BCS lawyer presented a strong case. This needs to turn into a recommendation to the DoJ to take action. As far as the current bowl system and TV contracts precluding any type of playoff. This is hogwash!!! The existing bowls could serve as the playoff games. I guarantee that a playoff would generate more revenue for the existing bowls than they are getting today. This alone will make this attractive to the networks to renegotiate existing contracts. This is particulary true for the non BCS bowls which currently host some pretty boring games. Good luck Senator Hatch.

.....I need to correct a ambiguity...Make that last sentence in my previuos post read.... if the Non BCS team wins, it takes the Final #4 spot and the previous #4 rotates to the at large birth remaining....in otherwords they swap places. What easier way could there be. This isn't Rocket Science...

......but for those so worried about the economy out there...College Football is Big time Interstate Commerece...it's also covered under Federal Gaming Regulations...The FCC plays a substantial role as does the Department of Health & Education. Where in your assine thinking doesn't the Senate and Congress have business investigating antitrust issues. Everything that College sports does effects the entire Nation econamically.....and some a lot unfairer than others.

?????????? FACE IT!!!!!!...What do you mean face it??? Ouote...It is a lot easier to be ranked by the end of the season in the Mountain west then some other conferences...Unquote... With that logic Susie Lou you have completely removed the SOS factor. So if Utah had done the same thing in the SEC which Alabama is one of the major big 4 guns not only in their conference but probably the entire Nation....you are going to insult us with a comment that being in the MWC gives them or BYU or TCU a better advantage. Would you please dwell on those rediculous words for a moment.

Whoever you are...let me just say that the shape of the ball and how it bounces has a lot more to do with winning games and National Championships then where you wind up in a popularity contest.
The Ball isn't Round ...in case you hadn't noticed.

just change the bcs to a playoff tourment that what every other college sport does
NCAA Absent | 10:31 a.m. July 8, 2009
So to this whole thread I ask "Where is the NCAA"? I don't get it when the NCAA regulates all season play but when the season is over they hand it off to a bunch of . . . what? Who is the BCS anyway? A bunch of fat, good old boys that have their chubby fists wrapped around as much money as they can. Again, where is the NCAA in all this mess?
Greed | 10:46 a.m. July 8, 2009
Clearly money rules. It's not about fairness, it's about maximizing profits for the people in charge. It's about power it's about control. Those that have it don't want to lessen their "fair share". I hope the legal system strips the national championship designation of any team that was called the champions when another team finished the year with zero losses. I also believe a playoff system could generate more overall revenue anyway. Can the BCS!!!

NU president: play our schedule...

NU's '08 non-conference schedule w/ Sagarin ratings: VATech (18), WMichigan (79), SanJose (105), NMState (146), average rating = 87...

Utah's '08 non-conference sked: Oregon State (13), Weber (85), Michigan (95), USU (115), average rating = 77.

Of course NU played Texas, Oklahoma and Missouri in Big12 play and the U played its MWC opponents. But THAT'S THE POINT, isn't it? If you're not in the Big12 or its scheming sisters, you can't qualify, even if you schedule tougher teams in the nonconference schedule (most BCS powers' OOC schedules are notoriously weak.) And Michigan was much tougher when the U scheduled them than they were on the field last year -- you can't say the same about WMichigan, SJSU or NMSU.
Yes NCAA step up | 11:34 a.m. July 8, 2009
The NCAA should just set up a football playoff system and go. Who cares what the bowls do. Who cares what the BCS does. The NCAA could end this debate today. Just set up a 16 or 32 team playoff and start it. Everyone would come and it would be bigger and better than the NCAA basketball tourney (which is crazy awesome)

There are many people who feel this is a waste of time and I'm one of them. This is a private organization. It may not seem fair but they aren't breaking any laws. Snap out of it folks.
Clearly | 12:07 p.m. July 8, 2009
It's a SCAM. When BCS apologists basically state the the system works because "we deserve it", it's obvious.
re: Fan 9:26 a.m. | 12:11 p.m. July 8, 2009
The reason Sen. Hatch is not "working to correct all the real problems we have in America rather than worry about the BCS", is that he's in the minority party. The real problems that need correcting right now are being caused by the majority party.
Strange in America | 12:58 p.m. July 8, 2009
I have never seen an issue where so many people, millions in America maybe 90% of football fans are for a playoff and a hand full of people can say no and that's it.
Howie of WY the Equality state  | 1:18 p.m. July 8, 2009
Powder Puff schedule, Utah played Michigan, TCU, BYU, and Alabama all ranked schools at the time they played and beat them, Tell the BCS to get real, it is not a national championship until all schools have a chance, - I'm talking playoffs involving all conferences, settle the score on the field or is the BCS "Big Football Powers" afraid, I say yes they are.
1+2+3 | 1:28 p.m. July 8, 2009
A playoff would be the best thing for college football hands down the money that the big schools give up would easily be made up by added revenue, and it would be fair finally for all schools including utah and byu.
NO BS | 2:23 p.m. July 8, 2009
I say drop the "C" from BCS and make it the BS championships, lord knows their presidents are full of it.
Dear Coach | 2:46 p.m. July 8, 2009
It is time to stop your buffonic statements and start paying attention to the documented facts, as published for the last several years and so stated by Utah and BYU, the so called "big schools" will not play them. Look at OU, they will not play BYU on a home and home. If they are so powerful, so mighty and in such a select group of football powers they should be able to come into BYU and wipe them clean off the face of the earth and walk away with a nice fat paycheck. They are gutless, spineless and yellow backed chicken blowhearts.
Cowardly University Presidents.

I have only seen arrogance like this before and that was with the lying dishonest tobacco companies.

Who appointed them the Kings of Football. This is designed so that no school except the "favored, annointed" schools can ever win a championship. When BYU won the national title in 84, they set out to ensure that will never, ever, never, ever, never happen again. And they laugh their way to the bank and say, "look at the stupid congress and the stupid Americans. They bought our crock of bull hook line and sinker."
Really | 2:48 p.m. July 8, 2009
For those of you who think more important issues exist - I wholeheartedly agree. The problem is, Obama and our present congress obviously have no clue in sloving the problems. Maybe they can solve this problem and keep their ignorant minds and dirty hands off of our country before more damage is done.
Big 12 fan? | 3:11 p.m. July 8, 2009
You are bragging about the same team in Texas Tech that lost to Ole Miss in their bowl game or the Missouri team that squeaked by against Northwestern in their bowl game? Just checking.
The Golden Rule | 3:27 p.m. July 8, 2009
Those with the gold rule. It's nothing new. That said, who wants to see Bodiddly Tech play in the national championship series? There are a lot of us that don't.

In March Madness it is fun to see a Cinderella school make it through the first couple of rounds, but we know that the final four are going to be powerhouse teams.

We want to see the top ranked teams go at it at the end of the season, and that's what we currently get with the BCS.
Mtn West Strength | 3:35 p.m. July 8, 2009
I am a Ute fan who will be cheering for BYU against Oklahoma (and most other teams). The majority of my Ute frieds cheer for BYU on a regular basis. It's only in November that I think the TDS can suck it. Hating BYU is only a Thanksgiving tradition.

I believe the MWC is a stronger conference than most outsiders believe and I am glad when they prove it. I also think Utah and BYU are stonger when the fans stick together (holy war excluded).
Tax issue | 3:49 p.m. July 8, 2009
It's all about money...
1) Our taxes go to these institutions.
2) Football revenues are tax exempt because they are part of a university.
3) Revenues are not fairly split by the BCS conferences. The lowest paid BCS AQ team had more revenue than the highest paid non-AQ BCS team.
4) BYU and Utah deserve to be in a BCS conference more than many of the bottom dwellers of the BCS. If you look at it BYU and Utah perform in the middle of the pack. Yet because they are not in an elite club chosen by the top teams they lose out big time. The big teams get to choose which middle of the pack teams get huge payouts and which middle of the pack teams get squat.
5) My tax dollars esentially subsidize the unfair practice and I am on the losing end of the deal.
6) Stop giving tax breaks to the revenue of BCS teams and I will stop complaining.
Are you serious??? | 4:55 p.m. July 8, 2009
With everything going on in our nation right now, Sen Hatch has the guts to bring up problems with college football??? Are you kidding me? There has got to be more important things to discuss and "solve" than the BCS blunder. Sure a playoff system for the to 8 would be great, however this is not something that Orin needs to be bringing to the table. It is obviously time for him to go. In fact, after 2 terms, they should all be forced to move on.
Football fan | 5:08 p.m. July 8, 2009
I just hope that BYU and Utah go undefeated until Nov. 28th
Conejo | 6:59 p.m. July 8, 2009
"There is realistically something that Utah could do. They could have played the schedule that Nebraska played last year, where we played Oklahoma, Texas Tech and Missouri, all of them ranked in the Top 5," he said."

I wish Utah's President Young would have said "Then I consider that an official invitation to join the Big 12. We accept!"

When they restated that they were not inviting Utah to come to their play yard he might then say "And that is the fundamental problem, YOU DON'T WANT COMPETITION FROM OUTSIDERS!"
Nebraska's Power Puff Schedule | 7:18 p.m. July 8, 2009
The University of Nebraska talked about Utah's Power Puff Schedule. Lets see who whey played.

Western Michigan--Win
San Jose State--Win
New Mexico State--Win
Virginia Tech--Lost

Now they did Play

Missouri--Lost
Oklahoma--Lost
Texas Tech--Lost

Anyone can lose to ranked teams!!!!

Before he starts talking Power Puff schedule he better look at his school. Oh, but his school made big $$$$$
RE: Conejo | 7:39 p.m. July 8, 2009
I think Utah-Nebraska would be a good match-up, but I seriously doubt it's a "competition" issue. Nebraska has to get "up" for games EVERY week, Utah has to do that 4 or 5 times a season. That's the arguement for some conferences over others. The MWC is a good conference, but it is fairly top heavy with three teams 1,2, or 3 every season. Other conferences also appear to be top heavy, but are NOT. You have the same powers at the top every year, plus and new team or two at the top.

I'd also love to see Utah in the Big XII. This issue of undefeated seasons making you the National Champs would go away in a hurry! Powers like OU, Texas, etc... can't go undefeated in the Big XII, What makes you think Utah can???
BYU Fan | 10:26 p.m. July 8, 2009
I think anyone who played as will as Utah did shoud have played in champingion ship game with a 13-0

The Nation is going to hell in a hand-basket and U.S. senators have nothing more important to pursue?
Sick and Tired | 9:32 a.m. July 9, 2009
How long do we have to hear Utes cry about the unfairness of the BCS? Five games won by less than a touchdown in a weak conference does not make a national championship team. Utah had a great season. Best in the nation? Hardly.

If anyone has a right to complain about last season it was Texas. Perhaps UT isn't crying as hard is they know they have a great shot at the next title game. Texas is a national football power. Hookem!

REF: Sick and Tired
Myfriend there are a lot of us who are sick and tired of the BCS...and posters like You. It's not just Utah.

When you come back from being lost in space... You will find that...though The Great State of Texas has repeatedly threatened to secede from the Union it hasn't yet done so largley due to the Twelve's ties to the BCS....the one truly strong bond that has kept Texas from cutting off it's nose to spite itself. What was that famous line from Officer and a Gentleman......no... Premadonnas doesn't rhyme with Steers..... something to do with the only two things that come out of Texas ...no it wan't peers either.
Ute Fan | 2:35 p.m. July 11, 2009
Even Obama said he was against the BCS system. Sounds like it has bi-partisan support.
Ute Fan in Pacific NW | 3:07 p.m. July 11, 2009
All season long last year, we had to endure "experts" on here and everywhere else (ESPN included) saying "this is the week the Utes will lose."

I recall "experts" posting on the DN site guaranteeing that Bama would win by 14, 21, one guy even promised a 35 point Bama win.

The Utes creamed Bama and won every opponent they faced. I don't know what it would take for anti-Ute fans to acknowledge they deserved a share of the title last year, but my guess is those folks wouldn't give Utah a fair shake no matter what.

When your bias is so strong that it blinds you, you're taking it much too serious and you should just move on and find a different sport.
