You mean, Steve Martin is not Mormon? Oops.
I always heard these myths growing up:
Myth #1: Polygamy was necessary in early Utah because there were more women than men.
Myth #2: The Mormon Church is the fastest growing religion in the world.
I always laugh when I hear the myth from my non-LDS co-workers that Mormons cannot drink a cola drink.
I always hear that when I drink my Diet Coke.
When I was at BYU, it wasn't Steve Martin, it was Bono of U2 who was "supposedly" a member of the Church. I also heard that the song, "Where the Streets Have No Name" was written about Salt Lake City.
Everybody who has grown up in the Church has been inundated with various myths. I tend to agree with Coppins that myths are generally harmless. Here are a couple that I remember learning in seminary.
1. 2 Sister missionaries knocked on a serial killers door. When the serial killer was arrested and asked why he didn't kill the sister missionaries, he told the police that he would have killed them is the 2 men standing behind the sisters with flaming swords weren't there.
2. Bigfoot is actually Cain who has been forced to wander the earth.
The myth that I remember the most was that Brigham Young used a secret and special gold mine in the Uintah Mountains to gold plate the Angel Moroni on the Salt Lake Temple. I think myths are a big part of what makes our religion unique and special.
How about this current modern Mormon Myth that every University of Utah student hears all the time:
"BYU is the Lord's University"
Hello, Brigham Young is the founder of the University of Utah. If any school is the Lord's University it would be the U of U.
Mormons have horns.
The myth that I wish would stop going around in our Church is that there is "the one special person for you in this life".
I don't know where this started, but Spencer W. Kimball said it was false doctrine and should not be taught in our Church.
There is no "one" person prepared for us.
I once heard that the Sword of Laban and the Liahona where kept in the ball under the Angel Moroni at the Salt Lake temple.
im not so sure that there wasnt someone ment for me.
the day i met my wife, i knew she was the one and that we were "soul mates".
29 years later, i still feel the same.
if we wernt destened for each other, maybe we knew each other in the pre-esistance.
Great article, McKay!
you always make a rough draft before composing a masterpiece. haha just kidding with you.
Mormonism is the only "true" church
How about this one, "Every Mormon will get his/her own planet in the Celestial Kingdom".
What about the Book of Mormon?
If the myth that BYU is the Lord's University is true, then the Lord certainly settles for mediocrity in his school selection.
Polygamy had nothing to do with sex..
Some myths turn out to be true. Take the myth of the "Jersey Devil" lurking in the pine barons of Jersey. People laughed it off and now there is a whole family of them playing in the National Hockey League.
The biggest myth of them all has to be that all native Americans are direct descendants of the Lamanites.
