To the recently retired Elect Cannon staffers: I know it's hard to join the unemployment line, but try to slow down on hitting refresh on the Politics favorites link, take a deep breath and release some of your anger. Chaffetz has done nothing but shown himself to be an ideal conservative. That's an attractive quality in a Republican. He isn't going away and that probably scares the paid staff of a lot of other Politicians too. Don't let it, just take notes. Might help to vote the way most of us conservatives would instead of the twisted way they think in DC. See we get to vote too, and a lot of us are paying more attention these days as socialism starts to take front and center stage.

Yeah, he can listen to a small minority and run, but he would be crushed. This would be a good thing, because this clown would no longer embarrass Utah in Washington. I suspect that in the ballot box, people who are afraid to say they are moderate for fear of being attacked by conservatives will votre with their brains and not through the intimidation that comes from the right-wingers.

I agree that Bennett and especially Hatch should bid us all adieu and help us get new blood. But Chaffetz? Oh my heavens NO!

Actually Cherilyn Eagar can afford a primary as well as the others. She started to receive donations as soon as the word went out that she was running and had filed with the FEC. She might not have as much available as some, but that is will change.

Money and/or name recognition alone will not win this race, Jason Chaffetz proved that last year when he won the US House race.

Bennett still owes his 1992 campaign $1 million.
Bridgewater still owes his from his last house race.

Let's see. Rep. Chaffetz passed an amendment to draw the line for TSA re: The 4th amendment and whole body screening. That passed with 300 votes.

I am showing 9 Bills Rep. Chaffetz has submitted as a sponsor.
Initially whole-body imaging restrictions was a bill.

Chaffetz sponsored bills (not including co-sponsored): H.R.2027, H.R.2193, H.R.2265, H.R.2353, H.R.2914, H.R.2915, H.R.2916, H.AMDT.172 to H.R.2200.

That doesn't include converting H.R.2353 to a proposed amendment to require utilities to show what the cap/trade costs are.

He recently co-sponsored a bill to clarify citizenship status for those born in the US to parents of those illegally here, to more closely follow the constitution when it says:

"All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside."

Before anyone gets all too excited about Chaffetz as some political powerhouse consider that he won a primary with 7% turnout. 93% of the voters could care less. Not a good sign on their part but 7% does not make a dynamo. And if you were to magically turnback the clock and gas prices were at todays levels, not $4+ a gallon like they were back then, that 7% would have voted Cannon back in.

I would love for cute little primadonna Chaffetz to run against Bennett. He would get his clock cleaned in a heart beat.

As for his position on illegal immigrations, which one? Tents for illegals during convention, Pathway to deportation during primary or guest worker visas during the general election. Illegal immigration is a tough issue evidenced by the fact that Chaffetz has taken three different positions on the issue.

Yeah, and the Constitution says the president has to be a natural born citizen of the U.S. But that hasn't stopped Nobama. If we can blink at that blatant circumvention of the constitution, I doubt an age limit will matter much.

You're lying. Chaffetz is not acting based on crowd response. He is acting based on what he knows is right. He mentions the response of the crowd to show people like you that contrary to your knowingly false claims, plenty of Utahs likewise care about what is right and approve of what Chaffetz is doing.

The only problem with adding a big name like Chaffetz to the already growing crowd of contenders next year is that between Chaffetz, Shurtleff, and Eagar you are going to be splitting all the votes of people who want to get Bennett out of office and you'll end with yet another term for Bennett. I'm just saying...

Actually, Bennett can't get 40%, so he isn't going to win. None of the other candidates are going to endorse Bennett, so he can't win. The best he can do is a primary, but without getting 40%, he isn't going to make it out of Convention.

That leaves Eagar, Williams, and Shurtleff in the race. There is only one candidate that they all will be willing to endorse, Cherilyn Eagar.

If Bridgewater decides to file it might make it more interesting, but I don't think he can win either.

I think the delegates will elect Eagar.

I am a Delegate and will not be voting for Bennett. He need to return to acting on the Simpsons. He does make a great Mr. Burns.

Obama and the Democratic-controlled Congress are absolutely DESTROYING the American economy. Polls show that Americans are leaning toward accepting this reality as fact. You guys are kidding yourselves if you think any Democrat has a shot at winning Utah's Senate seat in next year's election. By the time the election roles around, the Democrats are going to get blamed left or right for this economic mess, whether you feel that's fair or not.

Chaffetz has been sleeping on a cot too long already. The 3rd District should spare the state any more embarrassment and return this star-struck freshman home in 2010.

If Chaffetz wins a Senate election it will confirm what I already know about the state of Utah. Utah is filled with a majority of right wing religious zealots. Chaffetz is an embarrassment. He hasn't done anything in Washington and won't in the future because he lacks the intellectual firepower. He's a puppet of the party and has no mind of his own-but then again I guess your are supposed to be like your constituents. I'm already packing the moving van so best of luck to ya'll.

Chaffetz is a joke and belongs behind a phone at a call-center, not sleeping on a cot in Washington and wasting tax-payer money trying to get signatures on a silly bill limiting the use of whole-body imaging technology (for crying out loud, give the poor guys at the airport a break. They can't view porn on the job without this technology)

As a Democrat, I hope that Chaffetz challenges Bennett so that all of Utah can see how whacky the Republicans have become. Jason Chaffetz is a caricature of conservatism, mean, narrow minded, hypocritical and more interested in headlines than in government.

Please Jason, bring it, challenge Bennett: You'll be in the paper all the time and it's a win-win for the Democrats!

There is no reason that Chaffetz should leave his religion at the door. We are "one nation, under God." Our founding documents recognize our Creator as the source of our "unalienable Rights," and, as John Adams correctly stated, "Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."

It is high time that religious values started influencing public policy again, instead of the humanistic/atheistic state religion that has been forced upon us for so long.

Second, talking about puppets: Was it not the entire Democrat Senate and House that voted on Cap and Tax without reading it and the Stimulas without reading it...talk about a bunch of party puppets! Third, Jason is a conservative right now in the minority party. Minority members of both parties when not in power do not get much passed as that is how the system works! But at least he is getting the voice of his constituents heard! Fourth, you insult this man by saying he does not have the intellectual firepower, which of course is your educated guess right? Jason is educated and speaks his mind and presents himself well when answering questions posed by the National Media? Another liberal tact is: insult by name calling, not by stating facts! Fifth, I am not a right wing religious zealot from Utah sticking up for this man! I am an American who worked for Democrat Senator Paul Simon and Republican Earnest Istook because they were principled men! Your words were cheap shots!
