I was born in an eastern town whose existing homes were built primarily between 1840 and 1900. The town preserves it's history beautifully even down to the street lamps and most of the store fronts which are period Victorian. The private university which has been there since the early 1800's chose to keep every building on campus in the same style instead of hodge-podging the styles. My favorite Victorian style homes are the Queen Anne Country which a grandmother had and the Italianate which a great-aunt had. I loved growing up in these homes. They certainly did not have sterile architecture.

Just another comment: There is really no such thing as a "Victorian-style" home. The homes built in this particular span of time are actually referred to as "Victorian Period."

Incredibly fabulous that the owners undid the contemporary changes. Great article.

@anna: Where is that?

This small Victorian-style home rediscovered its charm with a full exterior face-lift restoring the look and materials. The house was designed with in 1902.
