Of course elected government officials should never be absent, for when they are away they cannot meddle in the private lives of the citizens they purport to serve. In the case of an extended absence, the public might finally realize that life goes on, often many times better without the intrusion of government. Salt Lakers can fondly recall that former mayors Anderson and Corradini were often away and no one except the press seemed to miss them.
