Comments about ‘Voters approve Nebo bond for 7 new schools’

No one can complain about this, is seems residents in Nebo School District decided to vote for the tax increase and bonds by not showing up and voting. Of course Nebo residents may not want the tax increase or bond. In that case it is voter apathy that won the election.

Sweet. We need to spend more on education and less on Mcmansions and SUV's. Nebo voters we got this one right!

Rigged the election? Stephenson should be ashamed of himself. Nebo School District acted responsibly and within the law. Nebo taxpayers acted responsibly by voting to fund their children's education. Stephenson would have been the first in line to criticize Nebo for spending too much on construction if they waited for a November ballot. Nebo voters are not given credit for any intelligence by Stephenson and Bramble.

I totally agree, but just wait and see! People will start complaining anyway because that is what Americans do best. They will find some excuse as to why they couldn't vote. As my parents used to say, "If it is important, you will find the time and the way to make it happen."

Does anyone get tired of Howard Stevenson being an authority on everything? Congratulations to Nebo on getting voter approval to accommodate the growth that their tax payers have brought on their district. Do people expect quality education when growth continues, w/out new classrooms?

what a travesty. Kudos to Stephenson and Bramble for moving to close an unfortunate loophole designed to take advantage of people who had no clue an election was even going on. Raspberries to the Nebo district who think that a recession is a great time to raise taxes....

THis is almost always how bond elections are run. They never want to run them when people are actually going to go out and vote because of fear they won't be passed. In this case the bond would never have passed had it been ran during a real election because of the economy.

By disallowing school boards to circumevent true voting methods these charlatans can really stick it to the education establishment. I agree that they should. I also believe that in the same bill they need to ban the closed door caucuses for rigging who the 'straight ticket' Republicans that we the people are going to vote in.

Nebo school districts leadership needs to be removed. Stephensen and bramble should also sponsor a bill to change the utah state constitution to allow for new homeowners to pay for the new schools. This will only increase the number of people who will not be paying their property taxes this year because a number of the cities in the school didtrict are going to have to increase their taxes just to squeek by, Meanwhile the fat and sassy school district with all of its overpaid administrators have failed to show us they have made an effort to tighten their belt first before bonding for more money. I would also like to know why we couldn't just move the 9th graders into the high schools since they are all now substantially lower due to the new high schools coming online. We don't need mre schools what needed was to shuffle the kids around a little more. This notion that we are experiencing growth right now is way off base. Get a freakin clue nebo schoold district, while your at it on your "sabaticals take some econ and math classes

How could you not know there was an election going on? We received fliers on our doors, it was in the newspaper and on the news. There was a week of early voting and a full day on the 23rd. How could you miss it? Take responsibility, people.

The ONLY reason Bramble and Stephenson are upset is because their legislative buddies in the Charter business want overcrowded, decrepit, unsafe Nebo Schools as an excuse to build more Charters.

Ever since Nebo completed two new high schools, the exodus out of Charters and back to regular public schools in South Utah County has turned into a flood.

Now, that exodus can continue. ALL students win!!! Self-serving Charter boards made up of selfish parents lose.

I guess the only "emergency" elections that are allowed are Republican Primary elections. In Utah County we have had a June Primary every even year since 1998. On the odd years we have Municipal elections with a Primary, if needed, in September.

Maybe, Sens. Stephenson and Bramble should just re-write their law(yes they voted to change it to June and November only after the last Alpine School District Bond and Leeway vote), to state that it has to be held on a previously scheduled Primary Election or Election day. That way we can vote for School Bonds and Leeways only with the Nation(February every 4 years with the Western States Primary), State(June every even numbered year with the Republicans and the rare Democrat Primary), Municipalities(September every odd numbered year, if needed) and the General Election every November. Then no one will have an excuse that they were not aware of the election.

Congratulations to Nebo for passing the bond! I agree that there are issues with this bond as there are with any tax inrease. There is never a great time to pass a bond. I doubt that Stephenson or Bramble would support it in November or any other month.They are anti-public education. The reality is that more and more children continue to enter the system. We need new buildings. I would prefer my children going to school in new buildings rather than portables and trailers. The small price we are being asked to pay is worth it!

If this is one of the two dates allowed by Utah law for such elections, then what's the problem? As a registered voter in the district, I got notices in the mail with the full text of the proposed bond as well as dates, times, and locations for voting. There was a week of early voting with reasonable hours on several different days of the week. Whatever your opinion on the bond, it's your responsibility to go and vote. If the election was decided by between 50 and 120 votes out of 6000, how "rigged" is that? An election's not rigged just because your side lost. And why is a state senator with no constituents affected by this vote so worried by the result? I think our own state senator can take care of us if we have a problem with our election.

Stephenson and Bramble are a complete joke.

What really should happen is the legislature should allow impact fees to be assessed whenever a new home is built. This is how it is done in most states. When you build a new home you pay a fee to lessen your impact on current home owners.

In Utah however, we have the good old boys network and many of them are realtors. Guess who squashes the bill whenever impact fees are brought up?

Here the school district obeys the law and gets slammed by Tweedle dee and tweedle dum for it.

If they would man up and take care of our their constituents like they should, we could avoid the whole mess.

I live in Spanish Fork and never received those fliers many of you are talking about. It's a sham that the election was in June. Seriously done so as to avoid most of the voters. Nobody thinks elections in June. As for the comment about spending on education rather than SUV's. Come on. At least you have a choice to spend on the SUV or not.
