there can be no true health care reform and costs will continue to rise unless there is tort reform, and there is no way on earth BO, a lawyer, will do anything to reduce the flow of our money into lawyers pockets. that's why he offered no specifics when talking about reducing doctors' and hospitals' liability, then he can't be held to anything. slippery, that one is.

by making health care government funded, he opens the US treasury to attack and rape by trial lawyers through the health care system.

Ahhh... that picture just warms my heart. Obama is such a nice person. He is going to make sure government takes care of us all.

You know, there ARE worse people in this world than Barack Obama. Even if you don't believe it.

Hey Debby Smith(cancer victim) when your through hugging the POTUS......head down to the Obama Healthcare DMV, collect your number and take a seat....and you won't need any REAL money, as you won't be seeing any REAL Doctors!
To Re: How Nice | 1:37 | 1:49 p.m. July 1, 2009
Your right. I can think of two or three.
RE: Realist | 1:53 p.m. July 1, 2009
I don't think anyone is arguing that the DMV is the most efficient thing, or that government doctors are better than private doctors. But, in case you didn't know, some people don't have anywhere else to go, and even a DMV would be a vast improvement.
BobP | 1:56 p.m. July 1, 2009
Tort reform is NOT the answer. In the area of medical malpractice it is simply a way letting the doctors bury their mistakes with little cost. At least the lawyers share the money with the victim.
Ron | 1:59 p.m. July 1, 2009
Wow, Obama is at it again. I wouldn't have invested 5 cents in the stock market this year, but Obama invested for me! He made me and all tax paying Americans a shareholder in the most bankrupt institution on Wall St, GM! Based on his lousy advise of the past, I will not accept his lousy advice on how he is going to fix anything in the future! Healthcare DMV? Closer to the truth and makes me want to puke!

Show Obama the door to his national library, his welcome has expired.

Haven't we about had enough of this slippery politician who lacks both the courage and the honesty to take a position and hold to it? Our only chance of preserving our nation and our way of life is to create a landslide in the off year elections in 2010 bigger than the republican takeover of 1994. The citizens need to flex our muscle and throw out the incumbents on both sides of the aisle. Maybe this will get their attention and they will start to serve the people again instead of protecting their own power at all costs.
Adam | 2:16 p.m. July 1, 2009
You cannot compete with the government. Just look at utilities. When the government enters the market it is impossible for the private sector to compete with the resources of the government.
Thinkin' Man | 2:18 p.m. July 1, 2009
When at last the President finally mentions the real culprit -- cost -- he fails to detail any plans to deal with it. It's like he's never really thought it through.

I bet in this forum in a couple of hours, we could come up with a comprehensive list of effective ways to reduce health care costs. Why can't the White House do that?
fascists | 2:20 p.m. July 1, 2009
Looks like this is a bunch of people that are comfortable watching the Fox hate network. Seems they are happy with oppression and massing of wealth to the priveledged few holding the sources of production. Such a shame since a great part of the readers here are struggling themselves. Makes me wonder why people are comfortable struggling while the privledge few takes all of the wealth. Wake up sheep, stop regurging the crap and educate yourself.

Reduce cost? | 2:39 p.m. July 1, 2009
Not necessary when Obambi has an unlimited source of tax payer wealth.

The object of Government healthcare is not to control cost's, but to control lives.

Re:Facists | 2:40 p.m. July 1, 2009
Thanks...just woke up! I see a President out of control and millions of people hurting and its getting worse before it gets better......whose fault is it? With CNN reporting the Democratic supermajority in DC, its time for Lib finger-pointing and Bush blaming to end. Obama and his boys are now accountable and in 2010, 2012, we will show them the door!
Doug | 2:41 p.m. July 1, 2009
Obama is right that quality of healthcare needs to be rewarded over quantity. Unfortunately his solution of a govt. run insurance plan (i.e. expanded medicare) to compete doesn't address this issue. Rather it decreases doctors compensation ultimately leading to doctors ordering more procedures to increase income, decreased availability of procedures, longer wait times for procedures, etc. (sound like socialized medicine to anyone?)

Insurance for all is going to happen (as much as I disagree that healthcare is a right). We need to focus on making sure that healthcare isn't run by the government as they have yet to prove competency in running anything. People need to own insurance (that they can take with them from job to job or when they get fired). Govt can subsidize this like food stamps for low income families. Giving people to option to insurance accross state lines would help.

Obama knows there are problems with our healthcare system, as do all of us. His solution only worsens the situation. Lets think this through. There are other options, unfortunately the media is so in love with Obama that his is the dominant option and he can do no wrong in their eyes.

BobP, when doctors order numberless needless tests to avoid the possibility of a negligence lawsuit, it raises the cost for us all, whether they get sued or not. that has nothing to do with the occassional mistake, but everyday practice. No health care reform will work without tort reform.

Interesting how you say the lawyers "share" the money with the victims, as if it was the lawyers' money to begin with. I think that's indicative of the attitude of the trial lawyers - they don't see the victims as victims or even as people, they see them as revenue opportunities.
Tort Reform | 3:10 p.m. July 1, 2009
Tort reform is the ONLY answer. I know I deal with this day in and day out. physicians are concerned about protecting themselves and their liscenses that takes years and years to earn. Have you all watched TV lately every other commercial is on how lawyers can earn money by going after doctors. I looked at several web sites as well and they are sickening. Lawyers will doing anything to make money and become rich. But I cant blame them its a thriving area to go into because no matterr what they get a share of the money. They know Physicians will just SETTLE because they dont have time to fight nit picky cases. Half of the patients dont know anything happened to them or realized they were suffering until a lawyer told them they were. This is the ONLY WAY PERIOD.
Insurance | 3:16 p.m. July 1, 2009
People can afford insurance. It just isnt a priority. They would rather buy the best clothes, cars, biggest house, support uneeded habits such as smoking, alcohol, drugs ect, eat out every night. because they use the health system about once a yr or less, they choose not too invest in good health insurance, but when an accident or emergency occurs they complain about the bills they are getting. ITS about priorities. People invest in material, short term pleasure but they wont get insurance to protect their health. hmmmm
RedShirt | 3:28 p.m. July 1, 2009
Here is why we need to look at where the greatest money pits are. If you look at the healthcare industry, the insurance companies barely make a profit, typically less than 5%, and their overhead costs are quite low too.

However, when you get to the hospital, they run 40% overhead costs, not because of inefficiency, but because they pad your bill to pay for people without insurance. There are studies out there that show that the average insured person pay $1000 per year through overhead costs to pay for uninsured people.

To "BobP | 1:56 p.m." you said "Tort reform is NOT the answer. In the area of medical malpractice it is simply a way letting the doctors bury their mistakes with little cost." But, if we model our health care system after Canada, then we will have to enact tort reform. Canadian laws make malpractice very difficult to sue for. That is one way they have cut their costs.
Socialized Medicine | 3:30 p.m. July 1, 2009
I was born in a Latin America country with socialized medicine for every one and guess what?
It doesn't work, every time I want to see my primary doctor, I call to make an appoitment and I was in a huge waiting list sometimes took almost two years just to get there. Medicines cold be cheap, but getting medical services is a nightmare. My old country was small and it was bad. I just imagine in this big country something like socialize I tell you, you going to regreted it, the president should spent one year in a latin american country and see for himself, I am sure he will change his mind in his dream of health care for all.
Dave | 3:40 p.m. July 1, 2009
The last people I want forcing me to spend my money a certain way is our new socialist administration. I'd sure feel better if this pres. had any sort of track record of success with even ONE program or bill he's passed or endorsed....seems there aren't any but you fools are ready to jump in line behind him and support this garbage. It never ceases to amaze me at how naive easily swayed you libs are.
Voice of Reason | 3:42 p.m. July 1, 2009
Obama's solution goes beyond the real problem and tries to solve problems that don't exist.

The REAL Problem: 47 million uninsured people in our country. I think we need to cover them somehow, and not just because of my humanitarian heart - because we ALREADY ARE covering them very expensively through laws that require hospitals to treat all comers.

The REAL Solution: Provide government-funded health insurance to those who are uninsured at taxpayer expense, which would probably end up being cheaper than how taxpayers pay for their health care now.

The OBAMA Problem: Obama seems to think private insurance for those who are ALREADY covered need a government-run insurance option. Why? For all the criticism, some of it valid, private health care & insurance in the U.S. runs far, FAR better than single-payer systems in more socialist countries, as measured by direct quality-of-care measures.

The OBAMA Solution: Set up a government-run insurance option with lots of unfair tax & market advantages to drive private health care & insurance out of business. "But you don't HAVE to switch..." yeah right. Obama clearly wants to kill private health care & insurance.
Wow | 3:44 p.m. July 1, 2009
I really am at a loss for words. You people really amaze me. I could try to write an intelligent response, but I realize it would be pointless.

I sorta envy you all--the world you live in must be really nice. Hopefully it has unicorns.

For the rest of us, I'm grateful that someone (whichever party he belongs to) is sentient enough to realize the system is broken. True, big guberment ain't the best fix. I run a successful business (and I reckon I'm relatively successful as my income is in the top 1% of all Americans), and believe in free markets. But the last twenty years of escalating health care costs--with diminishing returns--have shown us that the free market and big insurance biz ain't gonna do a tinker's dam to fix the health care mess.

And those of you who believe otherwise can keep on smacking whatever croke you do while listening to Rush or Sean or Bill or whoever else works their jaw but doesn't actually do any productive, real work for America. (Sorry, polluting weak minds doesn't count as real work.)

It always amazes me that a people that claims to strive for Zion qualities would argue that basic health care should be in the hands of profit-seeking entities.

Guess we read different scriptures.

Do you realize as a private business owner you have a big target on your back? We'll see how much you like Obama in another couple years. You don't believe in a free market if you believe in Obama. It was government involvement that broke the health care system to begin with. Who's smacking jaw you been listening too? CNN?

Are you serious? I sat here for a few minutes contemplating how to respond, but then realized it's pointless. I beg you to look at my initial comment, and then at your response. There is a huge disconnect in what I wrote and in your mindless, reactionary response. And please, DesNews, I don't mean that last sentence as an insult. I mean that as a simple descriptor regarding a basic lack of logical analysis. Unfortunately, that seems to be rampant on this comment board.

Please, people. Start thinking for yourselves.

(CNN? Are you kidding? I start my day with CNBC, listen to CNBC and Bloomberg during my commute (thanks XM), and read the Wall Street Journal when I get to the office. Hardly liberal bastions, I'm afraid. And sure as heck free market-biased. Sure, during the day I skim BBC, WashPost and NYT websites. But CNN? Next you're going to ask me if I read People Magazine, right?)

Lets take a look at international ratings.

United States is the number 1 spender, the most money on healthcare in the world because it is privatized.

The United States is rated 72nd level of health and 37th in performance.

Lets learn and apply systems that are working in countrys that are better and have universal healthcare.

To much greed from bankers invested in the pharmacuetical and insurance industry and payouts to elected officials who do not want to see this changed to a government system.

Check more international facts. These stats are provided by the World Health Organization. Do an internet search for: country ranking health who.

Another Reality Fact. Germans like quality and Japanese like to take whatever works and makes it better. This was not always the case but they changed to survive and so can the United States change to survive.

The United States needs to reverse the downhill health trend for it to survive economically.

A Healthy Nation boosts the economy.

A non profit government system is a good start.

I can't believe what I hear, that people will die if they don't have enough money .How crass and uncaring is that.Health is a birthright not a reward for being able to afford health insurance.People are left to die in the richest country in the world because some people feel that money is the ticket to full citizenship, and to hell with rest of us. By the way I have Insurance, But I wish Everybody could go to the doctor when they are sick . people bad mouth about other countries health care , My mother got an MRI two days before she died she didn,t wait months for it only a half hour.I have had many dealings in Scottish hospital recently and put them in the same league as hospitals here if not better and people don,t have the worry that they can,t pay their bills they can think about getting better. I haven't heard any scottish people say they want change their health care.

lost in DC | 1:29 p.m litigation amounts to 3% of health care costs. Last year there were 98 major health care mistakes in Utah.

We live in a free market. What would happen if there was no malpractice litigation? What health care be safer if malpractice had no costs?

You argue the reason we have criminal penalties is deterrence. The reason we let people sue is we all benefit from deterrence.

If there was no economic risk, health insurance would think about just saving money by cutting care.

When could a conservative think about cost and benefits? You will believe anything on Fox News.

Realist | 1:41 p.m I've called VA at 3:00pm on Wednesday. I had my appointment on Friday morning at 9:00. I arrived at 8:50 and I was seen by my doctor for 20 mins. at 9:05. I went for test. They took 20 mins. and my doctor called me at 3:30 with my test results.

I went to ER. I was seen in 30 mins. I had tests and I was out in two hours.

I had skin cancer treated. I waited a min for my appointment.

All the doctors have spoken English. Many tech medical school. In fact, some of our best specialist have been my doctors.

When, I had Kaiser, it took four weeks to see a doctor, I had five minute and my doctor spoke English as a second language. When I finally when to you appointment I waited over an hour.

You whine about DMV. When, I would take my Ford in, the dealer would call at 4:00 to tell me, I couldn't get my truck for another day.

We can be like you and just give up. This will ensure we don't get paid back. American financial failure is a conservative goal like Ben Laden's goal was ruining America too.

If thing work out we get our money back.

I'm know reading these comments daily that conservatives are economically challenged. What would the cost be to you and I if 2,000,000 workers lost their jobs? Have you heard of unemployment insurance?

You got part of your wish. China owns Humvee. If America looses its manufacturing capacity who will build the equipment required to win another war? We can buy weapons from China.

Why don't you support your nation with the same amount of energy you put in to your hatred of Obama? If you can't support America, please become another American Taliban.

Reduce cost? | 2:39 p.m If you read you would discover Americans pay the most in the world for health care that leaves 40% without coverage. We rate 37thin the world for health care. That's great business.

Health care cost have increased at one to two times the rate of inflation. The free market works great at being competitive and controlling costs.

Lets use VA as a baseline. VA runs on 3% overhead. Health care insurance is over twenty percent. The free markets fails to be more effective with money than your government.

US companies are at a competitive disadvantage because employer pay health care. This results in job losses.

Conservatives think money trickles down from trees. When someone needs health care and they go bankrupt, 70% of bankruptcies are because of medical bills, how is the lost covered?

Business pass these cost on to those who pay. You pay more now because Americans aren't insured. We are paying the costs for health insurance without receiving the benefits.

Over Obama's plan everyone would pay. People would have preventive care that reduces costs.
Is the power, stupid... | 7:00 p.m. July 1, 2009
The argument that there are millions who cannot get health care is false. Totally false. Children who need health insurance have a little thing called 'CHIP' and it costs next to nothing. This IS NOT about providing people with basic health care. If that was the case, the government could just issue a tax credit for people under a certain income line so they could buy it. This is about gaining more control. It's NEVER a good idea to involve the government in something people can do for themselves. Power to the people!

47 million unisured | 7:07 p.m. July 1, 2009
Problem: 47 million unisured? What is the root cause of this "problem"? Who said you are entitled to health care? If you want it, earn it. Don't steal my tax dollars to pay for something you didn't earn. These 47 million can receive health care, some choose not to have insurance, some are dead beats, and some have exceptional circumstances and could use a temporary help to get them back on their feet. Zion? Zion isn't about 50% of the people working to support 100% of the people. Zion is about everyone working hard and not having your heart set on riches. Socialistic medicine is wrong. We need to eliminate frivolous lawsuits, improve health care efficiency, and reduce the costs of health care. Someone on food stamps that is driving a 2008 Cadillac Escalade doesn't need 1998 Honda Accord me to pay for their health care. If you decide to spend lots of money on cars, cell phones, internet, Dish, snowmobiles, fast food, & other toys, then don't come asking me to pay for your health care. Cut your spending and take care of your own health through exercise and healthy eating.

Change now from Fear Coverage to Care Coverage in the Health Industry is needed.

Rememember how the Banks complained when Credit Unions were introduced?

Many people benefited from service and loans from credit unions when they were refused them from banks.

The Healthcare system should be changed to Focus on Care instead of Profit.

The government recieves more money from Healthcare industry taxes by quantity of visits instead of Quality of Care.

Keeping people sick is the way of profit in the current system.

To change it the Government needs to take control of it and make it quality focused.

American private industry output (capitalists) will do better when they have more healthy employees able to work. Profits can then soar.

Government will have a larger focus on where the money flow does go when it is paying for the system.

It will be to their interest to eliminate causes of people getting sick. It will expect quality care for the money.

Greed has stopped this change from happening by payouts to our elected officials from the greedy in the medical industry.

Change Healthcare Now from a profit industry to caring non profit system.

Harry Truman first proposed national health; if we would have started the baby steps back in the 1950's, we would already be more healthy, and already have been working longer and therefore, paying more taxes and our economy would have been better over the last 50 years with more people working due to having better health. Ages zero to 18 should get the basics first off and then a few years down the road we include the baby boomers and in the mean while we be patient and eat fruits and vegtables, and stop drinking and smoking.

This would give the industry incentives to change to quality which would help our overall health

and return healthcare and medicine back to people that it matters and should making all calls, callign all the shots,

the patient and the doctor, and other healthcare providers.

INsurance for basic care, NO matter who provides it (government would be even worse), is what is ruining health care.

my opinion | 10:45 p.m. July 1, 2009
We spend >$2.4 Trillion per year, twice the per capita rate of the next closest country; there is enough money, it just isn't divvied up well. Proposing trillions of dollars more just makes a too expensive system... more expensive. This will require changes at all levels and will require adjustments in malpractice and insurance practices, but does not require Gov't run care. Say what he will, the "public option" is the trojan horse towards gov't run care...if you tax the entire population, but initially only provide healthcare for a portion, it will, of course, appear cheaper than private plans, because all are paying taxes, for the use of the few. Once everyone dumps their plans for the "cheaper" gov't plan, the private plans die. Suddenly, though, the gov't now provides care for everyone, but there are no new taxpayers and we are faced w/ rationing or increased taxes. The current money pie can be divided very differently to accomplish better health care. This has to include malpractice and insurance reform as well as lifestyle changes if we are to see improved coverage and better outcomes, without breaking the bank
