Utah Jazz: Up next is free agent frenzy

If Okur opts the Jazz can remake the entire team. He will not get 9 Mill on the open market. Who is going to bid? The Jazz should bid on Lee. They would be no worse off. NY will let Lee go if he is at more than 7 Mill. They are saving cap for 2010 and may also pick up Rubio this season. They have Hill at the moment to replace Lee.
Unless DET bids on him Millsap will not get more than the mid level exemption. Memphis is saving cash. OKC wants Blake Griffin. They will try to get him from the Clips who are always in some kind of trouble (sooner or later).
Okur's agent is bluffing. If the Jazz over pay, that tells you they have learned nothing and will never be champions. This economy is bad and will stay bad. The 2010 salaries will be depressed for everyone except the extreme elite players.
Save cash and replace whoever needs to be replaced.
However, the Okur/Boozer experiment will never beat LA or SA. If Okur opts jump on the chance to remake the team.
Koufos and Suton can play C if necessary for a year. Suton shoots better than Okur (go watch his tapes). He also tries to play D.
Even if it takes 2 years to get all of the parts in place, remake the team. The economy will be bad in 2010. The market will be soft for everyone except James, Howard etc.
If Jazz management explain that they are trying to create a championship team the fans will support that for 2 years if the right players are replaced.
Sloan may not be coaching in 2 years. Start rebuilding for a new system that is not outdated. Get some players who will defend and can shoot.
The Jazz have not chance of beating LA or SA without major changes.
If Boozer opts then grab Lee. Trade Lee if he will not play D (NY does not play D).
The Jazz have to lower salary and get better.
This is the perfect time to remake the Jazz into a team into a contender that can live under the lux tax.
Right now DET is the only team who can bid on Millsap, Okur and Boozer and they will not bid on more than one and may not bid on any. They have lots of options and are rebuilding this year. That is Smart as it will be harder to rebuild next year (competition). SA rebuilt this year.
The Jazz need to learn from DET and SA. Rebuild now and also drop costs at the same time. Don't make the same mistake of over paying players who can't win championships!
Please show us you are not a dumb organization that can't learn from it's past mistakes.
The Jazz have the opportunity to become an elite team. Jump on it. Show the fans you are serious about winning, not just limping into the playoffs.
Whatever brings defensive mind set to this team because there is enough offense here to win.,
The jazz could be better in the long run
Peace out from the Jazz Oracle!
Since 2010 is shaping up to be a great year for both the draft and free agents, it might just be a good idea to dump players and salaries since the Jazz could end up with 2 lottery picks.
Keep D-Will and let all the free agents go because even if the Jazz kept everyone, they are not beating the Lakers with the players they have now, and really, that is the goal, to reach the Finals: to accomplish that, the Jazz will have to go through L.A.
With the right additions in a talent rich draft and free agent class, the Jazz can completely rebuild the team in one year as did the Spurs when they drafted Tim Duncan.
Did someone say the jazz can learn from Detroit? Really? The same organization that passed on Carmelo so the nuggets could have him. Then they trade the nuggets Billups. Seems like they are more interested in helping Denver than themselves.
Boozer caused this problem by being injured or the Jazz could have signed Millsap for 4-6 million for several years.
I hope Boozer opts out. Even if he comes back it will be for less money. Mark Eaton moved faster on defence then Snoozer.
Maybe it's time to walk away from sports for a year to let the athletes know they need to think about the game and not just the money.
Even begining players make more in one year than most people make in a lifetime! It's hard to imagine for the real person what $10 million a year could even look like.
I love sports and would really miss the games, however it's getting to the point where I can't even afford to sit in the cheap seats for myself let alone take my kids!
At least here in Utah we have some classy players that are not in jail every other week and seem to be involved in the community.
I know I'm not looking at reality and that if we want to win a championship we will have to pay all of our players $5 million a game EACH, but is it really worth it??
I would like to be a fly on the wall when Kosta and Goran square off. Let each of them take turns whooping up on Fezenko and then match up mano-a-mano. I hope at least one of those two can be a role player for us soon.
The Jazz still do not have a complete 2 guard. We either get Defense (Ronnie B) or Offense (Kyle K).
I smell fish!!! Okur says he is willing to take less but the negotiations are far apart. What does he want 10 years?
If the Jazz after free agency opens do not move some people or trade to get better then we will see that the new management(Greg) is just like the old and willing to just be average still. There was plenty of movement out there the Jazz could have been involved in but again no where to be seen.
This group can not win a championship. They can not beat LA or SA. If they get over paid then the Jazz can not afford to pay role players. Once in the luxury tax the role players cost twice as much.
If the Jazz pay the luxury tax it had better be for players who can win a championship. In years past the Jazz have over paid certain players and then could not get the additional talent they needed to be more than a play off team.
Learn from SA. SA does not over pay Parker and Ginobli. They are both better players than anyone on the Jazz roster. Okur, Boozer and Millsap are not players you can build an entire team around.
It makes no sense to have 3 point guards in the luxury tax. Why have a bad 3rd point guard who can't run the team and pay them double to sit on the bench or worse lose games when they do play.
Please change the mistakes of the past.
Also, the Jazz won't have 2 lottery picks next year. If they qualify for the lottery with their own pick, it goes to another team (Philly I think as part of the Giricek trade). The only way they get 2 first round picks next year is if they make the playoffs.
That is something to think about too. They could get a top 5 pick next year and have to pay for that too.
There are elite teams such as BOS, LA, and CLE who break the cap on purpose to buy the talent they need to compete for a championship now. That requires deep pockets and very good player analysis and management but it works.
There are teams who are brilliant at cap management and player selection/management (SA) and they win.
There are teams that destroy the franchise with bad cap management and player management(NY).
There are teams that are not good at player management but do try to win (DAL, DET, maybe DEN).
There are financially poor teams (MEM, MIL, PHO lately).
There are teams that are building (OKC, POR).
There are perennial also rans either due to bad cap management or player management (SL, NO).
Utah has the chance to become an elite team. Talent is cheap this year as teams melt down and the economy stays bad. Don't blow the future with bad cap management. Improve your player selection and management.
As is, he averaged almost a double double, and I think is worthy of a deal similar to Okur's contract with the Jazz - a six year, $50 million type deal. At the time he was signed, he seemed overpaid but in my opinion he stepped in and earned his paycheck. I can see a similar scenario for Millsap, and he should take that deal.
Don't lose a bunch of games early due to a crappy cheap back up PG. Price can't run the team well but can shoot sometimes (I know he is a crowd favorite but he is not a PG and loses games). Knight can't shoot. Both lost games due to weaknesses.
If the Jazz are in the luxury tax they may have to cross train Brewer or CJ at back up PG (3rd emergency option). The best reason for having AK on the second team was that he could act as a point forward and make up for the bad back up PG play.
Get a good back up PG and start AK so the game is not lost in the 1st Q.
Can this team learn from it's past mistakes? Price is not a good PG and he is not a good SG.
Fix the problem.
Use your brain. Continuity is quicksand at this time in this market. Seize the opportunity and make a contender.
If it takes 2 years to become an elite team it is worth it. If you can get the right players at the right price this team can contend. If they keep the same players at the wrong price (always done that before) the team will fall.
I think that if the jazz want to win the best thing they can do is let Korver and Milsap (Don't pay him ten mil) go in order to create cap space for Turkolgu and Lee.
Then make a deal that sends Boozer and Miles for Bosh.
New team line-up
Dwill
Brewer
Hedo
Okur
Bosh
------
Lee
AK
Price
Suton
Fes
This would be the best team the Jazz have ever had. Seriously imagine that line-up. 6-10 Hedo, who can definitely play defense, 6-10 Okur, 6-11 Bosh who is a flat out beast, Brewer who is a good defender, Dwill who does it all, Lee is a pretty much a white Milsap, AK is a good shot-blocker, and Suton can stretch the defense.
If we want to win this is the way to go and the crazy thing is it is possible. The Raptors want to get rid of Bosh, Lee will probably leave the Knicks, and Hedo will likely not get resigned.
If the Jazz can't agree on a long term contract then work out a 2 year deal and let Millsap prove he is worth more.
Whatever the Jazz do they should not pay to much to Millsap, Boozer, Okur or Korver. None of them are indispensible. AND none of them can be used to build a championshp.
They are parts left over from a Sloan machine that can't win a championship. Rebuilt the team for a future championship with players who can play D and who have enough talent to beat LA, SA. We are tired of losing to them.
I like Millsap, Okur and Korver but that is no reason to over pay them.
Learn from SA. If you do not have the right players do not over pay them and then trade them for the right players.
I do not have faith in Sloan's scheme. I do not think it is capable of winning in today's NBA.
Another way to keep Okur and Millsap is to trade AK. Everyone knows he's the reason we are in this mess. Without him making so much, we might be in the running for Turkoglu or Gordon. Memphis offered Darko's expiring and Buckner for Zach Randolph. The Clippers turned it down. Why not trade AK for Quentin Richardson's expiring and Buckner? It actually saves more money for Mem and they get the PF they are searching for. Utah would save $4 million for this year and almost $14 million for next year.
Our rebuilding should be based more around trading AK than guessing who will stay or not. We can't control where those player options will go, but we can trade our biggest roster destroyer.
Fortunately for the Jazz they can just watch Millsap walk into the meat grinder that is this seasons free agent market, watch his value deteriorate because nobody has the money to sign him, and then match whatever offer he eventually accepts. If Okur is smart he will take any extension worth more than 35 Million because there really aren't to many suitors out there who can or will do better than that.
They are right about him being on the same level as Lee though, the problem is Lee is overrated, just like Matrix and Amare were when they played for D'Antoni.
This team over paid AK. How much is that hurting this team right now and for the last 2 years? When will this organization learn from it's past mistakes.
Show us you know how to run an NBA franchise. This organization should be just as capable as SA in putting together a winner. You have the opportunity begging you. Take the steps, you may only get this chance once in a decade or so.
To paraphrase KOC. He sees some teams becoming elite contenders and other falling back. There will be a 2 tiered NBA. He gets it. Do the rest of the Jazz management get it? Which way are the Jazz going to go.
They can't do the same thing as always without going down. The cap will get them.
Remake the team while the financial conditions favor the owners. The fan base will support.
Pay more for the same, and the fans will know you are not serious and the cap will doom the Jazz.
That would leave the following lineup:
1: Dwill
2: Brewer
3: Miles
4: AK
5: Koufus
You would still have Harpring, Fez, Maynard off the bench. Pick up some older/cheaper veterans and play ball.
Then let's see if Jerry is as good as you all say.
I think with the team we have we can get it done...but if a few trades happened, I wouldn't mind it as long as we get something back in return. I don't want the jazz to start making trades to avoid the luxury tax, because honestly we have one of the lowest paid teams in the league (26th to be exact) It's about time we start spending some money.
It almost feels like being a jazz fan is like being a cubs fan or a red sox fan (before they started winning championships)...we get extremely close, but find a way to lose it.
I hope the jazz win it all this year!
1. It will force him to improve his attack to the basket. He is really weak in that area.
2. He will understand the plays better from the perspective of the other players. He will become better at moving and positioning.
3. If he can handle the job he will save a lot of money. We paid almost as much for Knight and Price as we do for CJ.
4. If there is an season ending injury at PG, CJ can get the Jazz by until they can make a trade (like ORL and HOU mid season).
5. If he can handle the role, he is big and can see over who is guarding him. Plus he can hit the outside shot. They can't back off and pack the paint.
I think he can pass. Can CJ dribble well enough? Is his Bball IQ high enough? Can he make good decisions?
He has got to be at least as good as Hart and Price. He certainly shoots better than Knight.
If CJ won't work maybe Brewer can?
Unfortunately, when they do turn it on against the best teams they tend to get beat (in a series) and on the road. They are not that good because they lack defensive talent. Even when they turn it on they are lacking against very good teams.
Part of it may be the defensive scheme which does not work against he triangle offense nor the inside out game that SA and many western teams use.
It is time to realize that this team is a play off team but nothing more. Boozer can not attack the rim against LA or SA he can not defend them. Neither can Okur. There are a lot more okay teams that they can defend.
I'm happy to see him opt out. Boozer, too. Let them find out how much money isn't out there right now.
Millsap tailed off badly at the end of the year. He's inconsistent, often absent on the road. Can't possibly play starter's minutes for a whole season. Remember the knee?
Get real.
Sign Millsap, Okur, Korver and Price. Sign and trade Boozer for Hamilton. Trade Harpring and CJ to New Orleans for Chandler and get Harp back after they buy him out.
Roster
PG: D-Will/Price/Maynor
SG: Rip/Brewer
SF: AK/Korver/Harpring
PF: Millsap/Koufos
C: Memo/Chandler/Fes
I think that is a team that could contend. Brewer could also start at SF with AK comming off the bench if that seemed better, but I think with Boozer out of the picture putting AK back in the starting lineup would be a good thing.
