Cache Valley's bovine air pollution problem is ammonium nitrate in the air trapped by inversion. That ammonium nitrate is almost certainly a decomposition byproduct of inadequately cleaned feed lots.

Cows in pastures don't usually produce much ammonia because the waste decomposes in the soil. In corrals the urine and manure mix, decompose, and give off lots of ammonia that mixes with ozone from cars to form ammonium nitrate particles. The geography of the valley and winter weather patterns make a kind of covered mixing bowl for the whole process.

I'm pretty sure I learned all this in a des news article, just this last winter.

This is what happens when a couple of mediocre reporters with degrees in journalism try to sound smart. Lazy research and horribly inaccurate. But then, nobody said you were capable of understanding complex issues.

"Relying on science to solve your woes is a fool's game." ummm excuse me. but saying all an overweight person utilizes science for is to hope for a magic diet pill is a distasteful offence to science.

what we've learned from science also illuminates the huge importance of excercise and diet. the only fool here is the fool that obviously has no concept of what science is.

Whatever. I think this is a lame editorial. Is this the best you can do? And it's time to move on. It's been highlighted all week. How about some fresh opinions.
