Should have a career | 1:52 a.m. June 25, 2009
lee Cummard should be able to have an NBA career. If someone like Korver is going to be a sought after free agent, then there should be a spot for him. Just don't let it be SA. He's the type of guy that can kill the Jazz and thrive on a team like that. He's smart, has a good shot, quick release, good passer and although thin he really is competitive on the defensive side of the ball. Not a bad guy to take a chance on in the 2nd.
Where's the optimism? | 7:11 a.m. June 25, 2009
This article seems pretty negative, despite its prediction that Cummard will be a professional basketball player. I have a hard time figuring out why his stock has dropped because of his small frame. After all, he had the same small frame earlier in the year when he was projected as a late first-round pick. I think that some people are talking him down in hopes that they can pick him up later than originally expected, and some NBA team is going to end up with a very good basketball player.

As a huge BYU fan I hope you are right, but I really don't buy it. Cummard has flashes of brilliance in no-pressure situations but, at the end of the day, he chokes in every big game. I'd love to see him do well in the NBA but I don't anticipate seeing him play another game in the U.S. And I'm a pretty optomistic BYU fan. Hopefully I'm wrong.

Lee does not belong in the league. I think any Jazz fan would tell you there is not a person on the team they would trade for Cummard. Did you see the performance he put on in the Portsmouth invitational (only player not to score!). I do think it is cute that you think he should have a career.
sob | 8:18 a.m. June 25, 2009
his stock has dropped because when seen playing against others who can play in the nba, he disappears.
UNLV | 8:39 a.m. June 25, 2009
Funny article. Cummard is not playing in the NBA. Wade from San Diego State has a better chance than he does.

I think Lee could have a pretty decent career. He would never be an all star, but he is a scrappy fighter that could be a good role player. Since he wouldn't be the center of attention anymore, he could relax and fill the gaps which is where he is most effective.
DieHardCougar | 9:11 a.m. June 25, 2009
Lee is a good shooter, he's a scrappy player on defense, and he gives his all whenever he's on the floor. I don't expect him to go in the first round, but I do expect him to be a contributor (albeit a small one) to some NBA team in about 3 years or so.
He has potential | 9:25 a.m. June 25, 2009
he just needs to find a team that is looking for a slow, skinny, unathletic white kid that is an average shooter.

Do they have a pro team in Tijuana?
Re: Ernest T. Bass | 10:07 a.m. June 25, 2009
Nope, so I guess you still won't be seeing any games.
Europe4sure | 10:24 a.m. June 25, 2009
Even if he signs with an NBA team I don't see him ever getting any playing time. He might hang around for a year or two before being shipped off to the Euro league. I bleed blue, but I just don't see it happening. I can see him kicking some butt in Europe and maybe following in the footsteps of Travis Hanson.
Hope | 10:41 a.m. June 25, 2009
Lee has applied for his passport. Because he needs one to get into Europe after he doesn't get drafted.
What's wrong with Europe? | 11:37 a.m. June 25, 2009
People talk about playing in Europe as if it were a bad thing. I live in Europe and it's fantastic! Travis Hansen has had a great time over here too. Most of the basketball here is fundamentally more sound than in the NBA anyway. And besides, why do you need the money and exposure of the NBA when you can still make plenty of cash in Europe and have a great lifestyle in a cool country? Come on over, Lee!
on the bright side | 12:08 p.m. June 25, 2009
At least his name isn't Jimmer.
Re: on the bright side | 2:28 p.m. June 25, 2009
Interesting that you mention Jimmer as he's the only BYU player on the current roster that I think may end up in the NBA. Tavernari and Cummard have Europe written all over them, "not that there's anything wrong with that," but Jimmer is a baller and assuming he continues to progress the same way he has the last two seasons I see him getting drafted. Jimmer is pretty much the exact opposite of Cummard, he plays better in big games.
Haha- | 2:55 p.m. June 25, 2009
Don't worry Cummard You'll get it- Look at Austin Collie, Just apply all the things you learned on your 4 month mission and you'll be okay- like "stick to it" and "don't quit" oh wait nevermind. Whats his waist size anyway? Like 17"? haha-
Osgrath | 3:33 p.m. June 25, 2009
A word to all those who laugh at the prospects of playing in Europe: there are about 450 players from the entire world in the NBA at any one time: a high school kid has a better chance at a D-1 scholarship than a college player has at an NBA contract. There is no shame in playing elsewhere - that fact that he is on the radar at all is a compliment.
Furthermore, how is playing for a six- or possibly seven-figure income while the team provides luxury housing and a car be a bad thing. And it's not like a European player lives in a third-world country. Germany is every bit on a par with the U.S. for creature comforts, Spain and Italy are also pretty nice. If Lee Cummard ends up in Europe, he will have accomplished something that most of the commentators on this blog can barely dream of and will make more money in five years than the commentators will make in their life time.
But it certainly is easy to ridicule someone in the limelight, isn't it.
UNLV | 8:10 p.m. June 25, 2009
@Osgrath.......It's nice to sit in your rocking chair and try and make Lee feel good about Europe. The bottom line is no one in America follows European basketball. Do you ever see it on ESPN? I am Ok with playing in Europe but Lee actually thinks he belongs in the NBA. That's where the joke begins. Lee weighs in at 100 pounds. Not a chance. He didn't even dominate in the weak MWC.
Ernesto de Bajo | 8:59 p.m. June 25, 2009
I'd actually take Cummard over Jimmer. Lee plays great team basketball whereas Jimmer is a bit of a "take it on me" type.
2nd round? give me a break | 11:30 p.m. June 25, 2009
Something went wrong in Cummard's world after his Junior year. All I saw last season was a grouchy player who never, for one minute, played as a team-player. Yes, he was always triple-teamed and yes, he took some hard fouls. Ever heard of the NBA?

He joins a long list of brilliant athletes that went down the BYU black hole. Maybe Lee can ring up Ben Olsen for some sympathy.
euro 4 sure | 2:35 a.m. June 26, 2009
In every game that had the least bit of pressure (except for easy games against Utah) he played terrible. He'd still have great Defensive numbers, and double-doubles, but how many wild shots does that include? I loved him in Provo, but he won't be drafted anywhere
UNLV | 10:03 a.m. June 26, 2009
The Rebels never double or triple teamed Lee. We had no problem handling him one-on-one.
Lucky to Play In Europe | 10:43 a.m. June 29, 2009
Eurpoean ball is a very physical game. Cummard will be lucky to make it in Europe as he is not a physical presence. I am a BYU fan but just dont see what most of the other BYU fans see in Cummard. A good player but not one that will be getting paid to play for long, either here or in Europe.
