OH MY, i'm so glad more Utahs are able to get liquored up, I was so worried there for a minute. We ALL know the many good things that come from people drinking alcohol!!!

Yeah, jimmy, better that we all pop Prozac like candy.

Most people who drink never hurt anyone. Punishing, or restricting the rights of, everyone for a few bad apples is wrong.

True freedom or agency allows you to make the good choices or the bad. Restricting choices reduces my agency and cheapens it when I make a good, but easy, choice.

The government of this State should not be encouraging drunkenness and sloth by creating greater access to alcohol. No serious person can deny that alcohol is responsible for a great host of societal ills. And yet, the government is willing to trade a few dollars in increased tourist revenue for the harm it causes to our community. It is no wonder that crime, divorce, and other social diseases are increasing at an alarming rate.
Re: John Charity Spring | 12:14 p.m. June 25, 2009
You are advocating Satan's plan. Remember free agency? Oh, and the divorce rate in the Church is the same as society as a whole.
Reformer | 3:21 a.m. June 26, 2009
Fellow Saints, unite! As we all know, strong drink has been prohibited to us. Never mind the gentiles who want to imbibe, this is Utah, and it should be dry.
Charles | 3:21 a.m. June 26, 2009
"Should not be encouraging drunkenness?? Are you serious?! It amazes how members of the LDS church are so ignorant when it comes to others drinking. Don't judge others or our government for supporting those that do drink. This change is great for the image of Utah for tourism. It extreme judgmental Mormons like you that give the church a bad name!

Are crime, divorce and other social ills increasing at an 'alarming' rate, or have we inflated a bogeyman?
Re: John Charity Spring | 7:57 a.m. June 26, 2009
I hope that you are being facetious, but if not, I would love to see statistics on the alarming rate increase and the correlation between the increase and alcohol.

WONT SOMEBODY PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN!

This is ridiculous, not only does this state have the highest consumption of prescription antidepressants, it's also the highest in the nation for online consumption, thats right, the LDS nation who is ranting about me wanting to have a drink to deal with all of them are the same ones who have their second web browser open to the porn site of their choice.

Don't worry LDS hypocrites, just go pop a few more prozak, boot up your computer for your porn, and all of this will just go away.

It is interesting that commenters continue to attack John Charity Spring for suppossedly promoting LDS viewpoints. And yet, he says absolutely nothing about LDS, Moromon, etc. Could it be that so called non Mormons also recognize the evils of alcohol?
Lionheart | 8:58 a.m. June 26, 2009
Yes, with all that's going on of serious nature in our government and in our potential for the future, by all mean lets get worked up over liquor. If life is grim, then do as the Russians do, (this country is starting to look more Rusky everyday) go get soused. Put a bar on every corner, that's the ticket.
Ray | 9:03 a.m. June 26, 2009
Think of the children??? Lets not use that tired old scare tactic that letting the market determine the number of liquor liscenses will have an adverse affect on the children!!! I don't need you legislating my moral compass. I thought this was suppose to be a Republican State? Quotas are un American and very much a Democratic ideal. Remember less government? Oh that only applies when it suits your narrow minded view. I know it's tough to be dragged into the 21st century but I think it's about time.
Braveheart | 9:17 a.m. June 26, 2009
I agree with Lionheart. Bars on every corner!!!! yippie!!! It's a great idea. Then us drunkards can just WALK to the end of the block and get all soused up. See, there are some common ideas between the two arguments. Go Utah....

As much as i enjoy a small drink now and again, I am glad to see the state regulate. Granted it can be s bit stringent on some points, but I am quite happy to not have every bit of alchohol the store owns out in front display all teh time. what wine they have on special, or what cheep booze they have on sale for the week. I've been to other state who dont have the same regulations, and it feels like they are out to get every booze hound in town loaded.

The extreme LDS members need to understand people are going to drink.... Days of prohabition are over, every one has the choice and freedom and agency to do so, and all you Nancy No No's make it to hard for the Church to put a foot forward in any progress towards tolerance and understanding that Christ taught about.

you people are amazing. You want to rstrict anything and everything that doesn't fit into your little matberry rfd viewpoint.

if there are more liquor licenses, that doesn't mean there will be more bars. People are going to drink - but at some point some bars won't be able to stay open because of too much competition. and yet you would restrict this.

and John Charity Springs - change your name - there is nothiong charitable about you. And a place to have a drink does not equal "drunkeness and sloth". Just because you have no self control and have to have everything hidden from you or you'll go overboard doesn't mean us regular folks don't know how to have self control. I can live right next to a bar and never go in. I guess if there's one within 50 miles of you then you'll become an alcoholic...

and Reformer 3:21am - "this is Utah, and it should be dry."??? why - you mormons think you own the state? and why are you up at 3am? too many prescription drugs?

you people are amazing - rather than practice self control, you try to ban everything...

The sad truth to all you drinkers AND YES!! I am one of you. the laws on alcohol just got stricter. You see private clubs will have the ability to charge an entrance fee at the door, and talk to a few club owners and you will find that they are planning to do just that. So the fee in reality just went up. Also the law on public intoxication is also going to get worse. If you walk out of a pub and an officer sees you, whether you are drunk or not he will have the right to give you a sobriety test. Whether you are walking side ways or not. give these laws some serious thought. And the bottom line is whether something is legal or not if people want it they will have it. Kinda like those anti gun people, all they will do is take the guns from the good people and the bad will still have plenty.

what do you expect when a bunch of religious zealots run your state? and you all wonder why everyone thinks your state is weird....
Joey Smith | 1:33 p.m. June 26, 2009
Hey when i was around back in the day i would pop open a bottle of wine for my special guests and have a good conversation! Whats the harm in that?
Richard | 3:25 p.m. June 26, 2009
If someone gets hit by a car should we ban driving cars for everyone, or just the person that caused the accident. I recognize that if there were no cars on the road then no one would get hit by a car that's why I am a responsible, aware, person when it comes to driving. Now the correlation to alcohol, I am 31 and have been driving for 15 yrs. In 15 yrs I have never had even a speeding ticket let alone a DUI. And yes I do drink. So yes you can drink and not cause harm to anyone. And just because someone made this mistake I didn't and shouldn't have to pay for it. By the way joey smith, if you read the deseret news you probably live in Utah yourself.
Naruto | 3:28 p.m. June 26, 2009
Yea, Let's all have a drink right now, it's on me.
JCS, you really need a drink, I think you're way to stressed out!

God gave humans free agency. Why is it that humans can't give other humans that same free agency?
