The opinion that iodine deficiency is rare in the US is not shared universally by experts. Surveys and anecdotal evidence both indicate that typical levels in the body have been dropping for years. Iodine has been treated as if a poison, while fluoride and bromine compounds have been liberally introduced to our bodies.
Also, iodine has extrathyroidal functions in the body, and normo-thyroid individuals may actually be deficient. The Japanese consume far more iodine than do we; do we have to return to goiter epidemics before we worry about iodine insufficiency - which might carry multiple risks (currently being investigated) ?
