The most moving part of the night for me was when Equality Award winner Jim Dabakis introduced a woman who has been with her lesbian partner for 10 years. This woman was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. Because her partner is of the same sex, she isn't covered by her partner's insurance (her partner is a Utah teacher). Instead of only fighting cancer, this woman now has to fight bankruptcy and devastating health care bills. If they were married, and if Utah recognized that marriage, then she would be insured as she fights this horrible disease. That's what this is all about. All we want is to be able to care for our loved ones--our partners and our children. We don't want to hurt your family. We don't want to take away your freedom of religion. We just want to take care of our families.
Liberal Active Mormon? | 5:48 a.m. June 21, 2009
Wow, there's a combination! How does one reconcile liberal views with LDS doctrine and teachings? I guess that whole "follow the prophet" thingy is just optional? Must give one whiplash.

Are you saying that your prophet is a hater?
Are you saying that your prophet says God created gay people so that you can make fun of them?

Are you saying that you follow such a prophet?

I believe YOU are the one misinterpreting Jesus, who openly embraced EVERYONE. Jesus does not need interpretation or translation.

I love how cynical and critical everyone is on these anonymous comment boards. Anyone can say anything they want without having to back anything up.

Why can't Utah do what California did and allow civil unions, then gay couples would have all the same rights as married couples as far as health insurance, hospital visitation rights etc.
CA gays have ALL the legal rights of heterosexual couples except the word "MARRIAGE." I am still at a loss as to all the hulla-ballou over semantics.....

Because in Utah, those with marriage get it all and those without get none. Marriage is arguably more important for gay and lesbian couples in Utah than it is for couples in California.
