Griffin was very dominant in college and gets up in the air like Boozer. Karl Malone could dunk over people but didn't get up as high. Griffin should be like Boozer but with a little better defense, maybe not as good at rebounding. He'll be a force to recon with but I don't think he'll be as good as Dwight Howard or Karl Malone - this year's draft isn't that great so Blake Griffin is over-hyped.
"In Utah, he's played with a superior point guard in Deron Williams and some good outside shooters."
Good outside shooters????
Not sure but they must be talking about Memo with that statement because our supposed "shooting guard" Brewer was exposed by Kobe in the playoffs to be one of the worst shooters in the NBA!!
AK? No. CJ? No. Korver? No. (check last seasons stats for yourself--very average).
Good outside shooters? I don't think so--we get exposed every year in the playoffs for our poor outside shooting.
They double team Deron when he penetrates. They double (or triple) team Booz in the post. If either of them pass out to our WIDE OPEN perimeter shooters, the defense does not really even half to guard them. They miss.
Game/series over!
We need to get some players who can CONSISTENTLY knock down some perimeter shots or the fact that Deron and Booz draw double teams is just wasted.
ESPN does this a lot and it really irritates me. Who will be the NEXT Michael Jordan. It is just a gimmick to make more money and all it really does is irritate people. Let Blake Griffin be Blake Griffin! Don't compare players to other players because in every case they are not comparable. DUH!
Malone had williams period. Without dw malone is nothing.
You are incorrect. Last season, Memo shot 44%(6th best in the league), and D-Will shot 31%, CJ shot 35%. Korver shot 38%, and he was in the %40-43 range in Philadelphia. Its pretty comparable to last year, D-Will did better, Memo did worse.
The best players IN THE LEAGUE were somewhere in the 40-45% range(This is out of players who made 55 or more 3's during the season).
Besides, its not like they were kicking it out to Korver for wide open looks, his man was usually on him like a shadow, because he is considered a "pure shooter".
So to call him, Memo, CJ, and D-Will "good outside shooters"... yeah, that'd be accurate. Thanks for playing.
Malone had who?
first, you start off saying tyler will be working out with the jazz. so i'm expecting that story. but then you go and fawn on about blake, who has nothing to do with the jazz, the salt lake market or the people reading this paper, other than the occasional sooner fan. and then you provide three photos of blake? how about some news on tyler? are you so desperate for people to read your story that you have to tangent off with the tryout's better-skilled brother, who has nothing to do with the jazz? and them compare him (blake, not tyler) with malone and boozer? WHAT!?!?! try again.
I think you are getting your generations mixed up. Williams has nothing to do with Malone. Either you meant Williams-Boozer or Stockton-Malone. In both cases they worked together to achieve the success they have. That's what happens with good teams.
You say:
"The easy route in the name game is to play up the fact the Jazz are working out a certain University of Oklahoma forward named Griffin today."
What is this "name game" and "easy route" you are speaking of?
Clever, you are not.
In college, Griffin appeared tougher than Boozer. He seemed more like Malone in that regard.
Malone is not only an inch taller than Boozer, he could get up a lot higher than Boozer in his prime. The Mailman would throw it down on a Gasol's dome in his prime, whereas Boozer generally struggles with guys like that due to his lack of length, jumping ability, and aggressiveness. Griffin looks much more like Malone in that regard as well.
If his skills in college translate to the NBA, when going up against a Gasol, he looks like he'd just try to posterize him. Just like Malone did. Other players would just get out of the way when the Mailman was taking it to the rack in his prime. You don't see too many guys getting out of Boozer's way. They instead contest the shot, because he's undersized and is not a great jumper. Griffin, with his size, seems more like Malone than Boozer.
Griffin seems more mechanical in his shooting motion than either these two. His offensive basketball skills seem more Amare Stoudemire, Antonio McDyess, or even Patrick Ewing at this point to me.
whatever assets Griffin (either one) has, they will never have Karl Malone shoulder muscles. Those upper arms were in a class by themselves.
Malone had Williams? I'm confused - I thought he played with John Stockton. Call me crazy.
Griffin is no Malone. There will never be another Malone just like there will never be another Magic, Bird, Jordan or Stockton. They only come around one time. Griffin should be a great asset to the NBA.
We have to get away from the two man team idea. Yes it worked once but may never happen again Why don't you check the record of the Jazz last year When Boozer was in the game and when he was injured it will tell you a lot. We need to have a five man team and forget what happened with to very special players.
KARL MALONE GOTTA DO WHAT KARL MALONE GOTTA DO!
Where have all the good quotes gone?
Its Taylor not Tyler Griffin. And To compare the two Karl and Blake you need to look at the Work ethic and the way Blake trains and takes care of his body. Very much like Karl. Boomer Sooner!
YOu count on the jazz ownership and managment to draft the WRONG "brother".
does collins ring a bell?
And why does the writer ignore the fact rhat boozer's offensive numbers benefits greatly from the BAD jazz system, that is design to get the PF the ball everytime and give no one else the opportunity but as an afterthought.
uh, I don't think there's much there. I don't think anyone will think of calling Carlos Boozer anything like "the Mailman" anytime soon.
We need more than a two man or a one man game. We need a 5 man game like in the days when we went to the Finals two years in a row with Stockton, Malone, Hornacek, Russel, and the rest of the crew. Those guys knew how to PLAY! We can have all the talent in the world but if they can't figure out how to gel like that we ain't goin' nowhere.
I thought you were saying will Griffin be a hard worker or a lazy donkey? Malone or Boozer? but you meant will he be a power forward like Malone. still, i am not sure why you would classify Boozer in the same sentence as Malone. yes, both are whiners but Malone never missed a day of work while Boozer has missed the equivalent of 1 season in 3 b/c he wanted to be in LAXative country rather than Salt Lake after bolting from the Cavs. had he stayed in Cleveland he would be wearing a championship crown by now (if he had actually played on the court instead of playing hurt). let's face it, Boozer should opt out and the Jazz can clear some room for Milsap and Chris Bosh from toronto...
All I have to say is Boozer, PLEASE OPT OUT!! If you stay here we will be chained to your mediocrity and lack of intensity for yet another season. Wow you stepped it up for ONE playoff game...whoooooooo, nice job Ostertag. Try playing like that more than once a year and maybe we'd actually be a force in the league. Double-doubles are not impressive for players your size. You make 3 layups and 4 freethrows a game...that gets you 10pts, and unless someone your size is running away from the ball you'll get 10 rebounds a game. NOT HARD. BOOZER JUST GO AWAY.
