Salt Lake City should ensure that transportation planning dominates over urban design and non-transit factors. Also, the standard 25-year panning period is too short and decisions based on it will limit economical and efficient long-term expansion options. Few urban planners, architects and pro-developer officials understand anything about transit and rail. The longer-term future is difficult to describe, but allow now for longer trains, some high-speed rail, bilevel cars, regional transit of all modes, intensive and extensive non-automobile travel, and design a hub for seamless connectivity between all modes. Dont let buildings occur in space where future rail and transit might go. Do not make the mistakes that Denver is making, whereby future intercity transit will almost certainly not fit into the cramped and short-lived Union Station hub and a new station may well be needed 3 or 4 or 5 decades from now, and where connectivity and intermodal transfer is unsatisfactory. Keep your options and flexibility open. See the Colorado Rail Passenger Association web site for more information on Denver and litigation.
