Comments about ‘Shouldn't there be a place for kids' playfulness?’

You have to let kids be kids and we don't do that very well. They're WAY clamped down compared to how things were when I was a kid. Maybe we said boys will be boys too much. But now we don't let anything slide and its wrong.

Somebody takes herself and her august position WAY too seriously. Too bad the entire audience didn't rise as one and insist on the diploma being awarded then and there, and then take a long look at Ms. Lukas' employment contract. Kids are not - thank goodness - automatons. Spontaneous joy at graduating used to be the rule, not against the rules.

I attended a community college graduation a few years ago where the family of one grad-to-be whooped and hollered from the time they got there. When he actually received the diploma, they were practically deafening in their cheers - but for good cause. The young man was the first in the large, extended family to ever graduate from college, and he himself cried as he was embraced by his loving family. And his classmates, who knew his story, cheered as loudly as his kin. What a lovely memory for all the attendees.

If all you want is a long procession of robotic, expressionless teens to physically take possession of their diploma why bother with a ceremony at all? Just mail them out and be done with it.

Certainly there has to be a balance between chaos and civility, but this lady is wound way too tight!

On the positive side, the district's SuperNintendo lady could be put to work as a diamond-making machine. All they'd need would be coal, KY, and little patience. Think of the profits for the disctict!

Hate to be a heretic, but couldn't we just mail diplomas. What a lot of angst and heartache over graduating. It's not as bad as University graduation, of course, but the idea of such a hideous amount of preparing and waiting and... now this bizarre punishment - and for what?

How odd that, in today's climate of permissive disregard of really bad behavior, an authority inflcits draconian punishment - and for blowing a kiss to Mom? Maybe the authority in question didn't like displays of actual family affection. Gnats and camels come to mind.

It's interesting what is being controlled here - and what isn't even contemned. Children (actually adults; they're 18 right?) traditionally (many of them) get sozzled immediately after graduation then go on to fornicate at the local motel. All good fun?

Then you go to University and are forced to drink alcohol until you die. More fun. Let's get the balance right.

Why would a rational young man or woman, take seriously, people and institutions that are so rigid
and overly reactive, as these fools showed themselves to be?

This is what happens when you

replace common sense and the spirit of the law

with rigid and blind adherence to the letter of the law.

A Vice Principal at a local Jr. High apparently halted a "Spirit assembly" within minutes of its start due to the students being "too loud".Students and many teachers alike were shocked.These sour puss,overly controlling types need to be driven out of our school system. They are either burned out or not suited to work with youth.There main concern doesn't seem to be the student's welfare but making themselves in control.

That's why you wait until after the diploma is in your hand for the antics.

This is what happens when you give a small minded person a little bit of power. That school superintendant did far more to ruin that graduation than a truckload of silly string. Of course, any real disruption to a graduation ceremony should be dealt with in that fashion, but blowing a kiss? Someone who cannot distinguish between blowing a kiss and real disruptive behavior should not be in a position of authority in any school system. That administrator's actions have tarnished the name of Bonny Eagle High School forever. From this point forward, that school will be linked in the minds of the entire nation with abuse of power and small minded administration. I am sure that many considering relocation to the area will hesitate when they realize that their children will be subjected to this type of treatment.
