Struggle over pool in Ogden

Missing from this story is an explanation that the Mayor had signed a contract with OWCAP behind everyone's back. The Council was not informed that all funding for the MWC was removed from the City Budget until the last minute. Saying that grants will be applied for is not the way to ensure long-term funding for this much-used facility. Grants are not necessarily funded and even if they are now, there is no guarantee funding will continue into the future.

Godfrey just wants to get the MWC off the City books.

Imagine a mayor attempting to have less of a burden on the citizens of his or her city! If a private entity can better manage the center and provide better services to the surrounding residents and still not cost the city anything I don't see that as a bad thing. Pioneer Days, and Union Station are two excellent examples of previously city funded things that were switched over to private organizations and are now run much, much better than before, not to mention with less or no burden to the taxpayers. How is that bad?

If the mission of the OWCAP organization was the same as the current facility operations, Imagine That might have a point. But that isn't the case. Ogden will loose it's community center. An actively used facility where residents of all ages and income levels come in exchange for a single use operator that can only pay the bills as long as their grants keep coming in or in this case if they come in. OWCAP has stated that it has no intention of maintaining any of the current services. This is a poor statement about the administration of the city.

Imagine,
It is bad because OWCAP has no intention of continuing to run the MWC pool, which is heavily used by children, adults, and seniors. These people often cannot afford to swim elsewhere, especially in the winter. If private management were to continue and/or expand current services, that would be fine but that is not the case here. The MWC is a public recreation center and needs to continue to be just that.

Imagine That - so are you implying the city should unload every 'burden' that is a service to its residents? But the current administration has created 'burdens' Ogden residents now face - The Junction comes to mind here, we were lied to about its financing and told it would be self-sustaining, now the city administration is trying to find a way to pay for the shortfall on the backs of the taxpayers in Ogden.
Union Station may be run better but it is only because it doesn't have the restraints of the Godfrey clan. Pioneer Days - not a fan so I cannot add any comment here.
One burden I can see is to reduce the number of high-paid or over-paid business and economic development employees for Ogden City. Parks and recreation are not self-sustaining should they also be eliminated?
Glad I don't live in Ogden! | 1:00 p.m. June 22, 2009
Sounds like it's time to vote all new representation at the city, the mayor and council need to go!
