Real Salt Lake: Kreis coaches how he played

Advice for Kreis | 8:34 a.m. June 17, 2009
As a 20-year veteran of coaching soccer at many different levels, I have some advice for Kreis: Check your ego at the door. Kreis is a very stubborn person and believes in doing things a certain way, whether it's the best way or not. You can't be a good coach that way. You have to be willing to adapt to personnel, situations, and opponents. Not to mention soccer is a constantly evolving game. The best coaches evolve with it. Changing things is not akin to admitting you were wrong.

Kreis has the work ethic and soccer knowledge to be a good coach. At this point what would benefit his coaching the most is a little less ego.

Despite facing challenges I believe coach Kreis has done a good job. I appreciate his enthusiasm and support for the youth development program along with his responsibilities for the 1st team. Go RSL, Go RSL Youth!

...and thats about where this team will finish.

He is not great, but not horrible. And our record shows it.

Totally agree with Advice (8:34 am) and this way that the Des News is doing is not the best for Kreis, RSL won ONE game, lets see what happen next to "make him a saint", I hope this is the first step to a complete recovery to this competitive team. How many fans were asking for an attacking game? Many mistakes on the defense were originated for playing defense. I like the triangle, but with an offensive mentality, not risking back passes to the goalkeeper. Please, Des News, have a better coverage of this game and do not overpraise players or coaches, and those in TV learn and explain the rules especially the offside to those that dont understand this sport.

Let's not blame Kries, let's be realistic. Given the caliber of players we have, we are not going to be a powerhouse. We're kind of like the Jazz in that regard. We're not going to attract big names to Utah, so we have to overacheive with the players we have in order to compete. That's just how it is being in Utah.

It's clear from this article that Kries is still growing into being a head coach. I'm fully on board with the coach, and I believe he can bring this team to the top.

how on earth can you compare Real in medicore MLS to the jazz. Mid-Small market Geez I am so tired of hearing that gee whiz how big is Denver? The Nuggets season comprehende?

yeah spelled Mediocre wrong. Fedor "please email me",Kreis if he improves I can live with a lot easier than Sloan. At least Kreis seems open to change and constructive criticism. That is more I can say for Sloan and his
faithful "loving sloanaholics"

Normally I don't like psychologizing like that, but his own quotes do support your opinion. Sounds like he kinda walked in expecting he'd just transform the team into a winner by force of will. It ain't that easy. In MLS, where no team is permanently better than another, everybody's got a way to throw you off your game plan, so you really have to adjust more than just impose yourself.

Kreis has done much better over the last two weeks by finally making adjustments to the formation, and by having the courage to sit a couple of players for under-performing.

Unfortunately, the team has already suffered for his stubbornness prior to that, and it remains to be seen if they will recover in time to make the playoffs.

RE:Advice for Kreis | 8:34 a.m. June 17, 2009

I totally agree. I am a veteran coach as well. When the other team touches the ball, I am the first one to yell at the official, "Hey, only the goalie can use his hands"

I also personally cut the oranges and put them into individual zip lock bags. I then put them in a cooler with the little Sunny D bottles. I do what it takes. I tell the kids to kick the ball hard and kick it into the net. I have learned to check my ego at the door like Kreis should.

When his players are running around he should tell them to go kick the ball. If they don't, then sit them on the grass and put someone else in.

Check your ego. And your job status, maybe the classifieds will help
RE: 100% agree | 9:46 a.m. June 19, 2009
DUDE.... Get a clue. The drink of choice for soccer is Capri Sun, not Sunny D. Although, several of the new flavors of Sunny D are delicious and if they are on sale it might be a good substitute.

Hey Kries, if you are running late and do not have time to cut oranges, get some seedless grapes. They always work in the clutch.

Kreis is a fine, young, up-and-coming coach. Once RSL acquires more talent, we'll see results in the standings.

Phil Jackson, on the other hand, has never won a championship without Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant. He quit the Bulls when Michael retired, and he quit the Lakers when Shaq was traded.
