He can stay away as long as he likes--into personal retirement...
The Jazz need to thank Sloan for his long tenured and yet trophy-less service , but it is time for him to hang it up. No one should expect him to coach in a wheelchair.
I wish him well in his recovery process, nevertheless.
Why do Utahns hate Jerry Sloan. The best coach in the NBA! If you think anyone else will do what Jerry has done, think again my naive, hypocritical Utah fans.

It blows me away that all the so called Utah fans that don't like or appreciate what Sloan does and has done for Utah. And what they point at as reasons to get rid of him. They don't like his timeouts and that he played a 10 year NBA vet over a talented younger Price. And even Sloan said he might have made a mistake there. Then they really start reaching and say untrue things like he can't develop youth or that he doesn't play rookies. He develops talent very well and plays rookies that deserve it.
The one real complaint is no titles and Jerry himself will readily admit he hasn't won anything yet. But even with no titles there has never been a year when the Jazz had the best talent and were picked to win it all from the start.
If the Haters had their way the Jazz would be worse than the Clippers year after year.
Bloodclots after a knee replacement, been there, it will all be worth it in a few months.
Sloan has been and always will be "The Man" when it comes to team players abilities and their playing time. He wants TOTAL control never listening or watching others and their methods. If he would just watch how other teams play on defense and offense today maybe we might see improvement in our team but he wants to stick to what he has been doing for 30 years. He coaches with ridicule and embarrassment to players that make mistakes and thinks the only ones that can play this game are veterans. He doesn't play nightly match-ups, doesn't encourage young players by overlooking mistakes(veterans can), and in general likes to have the young players fear him. His mentality was fine 15 or 20 years ago but just isn't compatible with todays youngsters. He's a control freak!
you are from new york boy you are an expert on winning teams and winning coached with the Knicks right,,,
best coach in the nba hee hee hee hee
I knew one person would come out with no sense
Wow, I'm amazed at the knowledge people have here. How do I get to see all the practices and ride on the plane and sit on the bench so I can know as much as all these people posting do about Sloan. All I get to see is what he accomplishes which, except for no championship, is amazing.
People complain about Sloan and how he always does the same thing.
What?
I do not recall seeing Osterag or Mark Eaton shooting 3's WHENEVER THEY WANTED.
I do not recall seeing teams of old playing "uptempo".
I do not recall the old Jazz teams scoring 100+ a game.
I do not recall seeing players like Millsap getting playing time like he did in his first year.
People complained endlessly that the Jazz style of slow grind-it-out offense was boring and we needed to run.
Now Sloan wants to constantly run and I would argue it is the players more than Sloan that slow it down. Sloan is always waving his arms for his players to run as they walk it up the floor.
Current players play a whole lot less defense than the old Jazz teams used to--that is for sure. Thats change.
Yes you complainers GOT EXACTLY WHAT YOU ASKED FOR!!!
Now we play uptempo "exciting" basketball. What comes with that is little or no defense and we have seen for 3 consecutive post seasons what it has yielded.
Jerry has yielded too much to clowns like you who don't know basketball.
exactly what has he accomplished? Escpecially since finals vs Bulls? You see him great.. Does that tell you about bias for certain players, certain rotations inflexible, comical "pack the paint" give up 3 all day defense, no rotations-harnessing a shooter who was once a scoring machine Kyle Korver, forcing Boozer back in the lineup ruining chemistry, not playing a 2 time NCAA scoring champion, harnessing Price, Kous and Fez development playing 2 washed up veterans.....
Anyone here knows with any knowledge that even Paul Westphal would have won at least 3-4 more games last season which could have meant a run into the 3rd round of the playoffs. Sloan is inflexible, talks about "toughness" regaring Hansborough, did not say anything regarding skill set.
While leaving, he can take Phil and Tyrone with him. That way Greg will not name either one of them as replacement.
What's funny is every player Jerry ships out after 2 or 3 years talks about how great an influence he was on their games and they didn't realize it.
the reason we are asking for uptempo basketball is possibly we cannot stop anyone, it is matter of many possessions as possible. The players and personnel is huge issue, but fundamentals, good teaching and sound strategies and adjustments are others. I am sick of having to defend sound reasons for replacing Sloan. Everytime I attempt to give it a rest, articles come out triggering my thoughts. Therefore, I will not stand by and say nothing.
One question to the "holics"...Would you rather have a braintrust of Jackson and Kupchak (see getting Brown, Trevor Ariza) or Sloan and O Connor?
I thought so..
Sorry to say but Todd is right and its my turn to tag team with Todd.
Again we have to defend that its not that we do not appreciate what Sloan has done for the Jazz and the team and he deserves to be in the HOF.
BUT you cannot deny the last three or four years the decisions made have been horrible at best and had it not been for his tenure he would have been fired by most teams for those years.
He does not watch film. He will not motivate. Shows loyalties to Vets to a fault. And the kicker of it all he refuses to adapt to any of it.
Thanks Coach but lets find someone who is willing to do the little things above to help us win not someone who is I am what I am and if you don't like oh well.
my critics think I enjoy tearing down people. How many times I have to say jerry deserves to be in the Hall, maybe eventually have a plaque and to rename the arena after him even. This is about our future and I am tired of being average... far as the draft I do not care about these win values it is about the best player, how great was Arkansas when Brew was there, L Tech when Paul was there, etc... They were average to poor teams. AThletic bigs ranging from 6'9 to 7'0 were the main reason the Lakers won it. Tyler will be gone way before #20. There are so many ways we can go, get Big athletic guy, draft a swingman, If Brockmon available get him 2nd round, Gibson is a warrior but limited, Pendegraph I think would be great or Hill
Some of you are so off. Sloan has done more with less than any other coach ever. Does anyone remember the 42-40 Jazz team? Here's some of the players that played on that team: Curtis Borchardt, Keon Clark, Jarron Collins, Paul Grant, Tom Gugliotta, Ben Handlogten, Raul Lopez, Aleksandar Paulovic, Micahel Ruffin, and Maurice Williams. And here are some of the BEST: Carlos Arroyo, Raja Bell, Gordan Giricek, Matt Harpring, AK47, Mikki Moore, Greg Ostertag, and DeShawn Stevenson!! How many games would Jackson have won with that roster? 20 maybe. We have never seen what Sloan can do with the best team. He has never had that. The closest he had was the best PF for the first 3 quarters of all time with the most unselfish player ever and they went up against the best team probably ever in the NBA. With Sloan as coach of the Lakers this year they wouldn't lose a game in the playoffs. Get real people.
Chadders, everybody I am on the floor laughing!!!!!! Rolling over....."sloanaholic" 20 wins with Jackson?
Chadders dream on.......This is so funny i need some soothing liquid to calm down.
Sloan still has it. Really Sloan haters, who are you going to get to come in here and coach the Jazz?
Anyone that bashes Coach Sloan knows nothing about the NBA. Jerry is the Utah Jazz and always will be!!
todd I respect your passion but seriously what the least talented team Jackson has ever coached? He's always had one of the top 3 players in the league on his team. Did you read the roster of that 42 win team!? That's probably the first time I've ever used "best player" referring to guys like Ostertag and Giricek. I'm pretty sure if Sloan ever gets a top 3 in the whole NBA talent he will win a title. Jackson couldn't win the title with Shaq, Kobe, Payton, and Malone! Against guys like Rasheed Wallace and Ben Wallace. Losing that title takes him forever out of the best coach ever spot. Red wouldn't have ever, EVER lost that title.
has goods and bads. Its not all one or the other. He gets players to play hard and consistent throughout the season. The Jazz constantly have a good offensive scheme (though how much of that is Phil Johnson?). Whatever his part is in choosing the draft picks, the Jazz are a good drafting team. And by all accounts, off the court he is a stand-up guy.
On the other hand, Sloan seems more geared towards having a team play consistent all season then living with some inconsistencies and peaking in the playoff. The Jazz force players to play to there offensive and defensive schemes instead of molding schemes to the players. Whatever his part is in signing veteran players, the Jazz have a horrible record of signing aging veterans who don't contribute. And on the court he is very abusive.
Its a give and take with Sloan. That being said, it is time he pulls a Frank Laden and starts handing over the reins to young blood. Hornecek maybe?
