Good Luck McCall Clark!!

Amazing Grace

how sweet the sound that saved a (wretch like me)!
Twas (grace) that taught my heart to fear,And grace my fears re-leived. A sinner saved by (grace)=God's unmeritted gift, not works.

Blasphemy

Amazing Grace (above) got it right. This is not a tenet of the LDS faith and should not be sung in an LDS ward meeting or stake conference. It is the same reason we don't sing Ave Maria.

Blasphemy - 12:08 p.m.

The LDS church does believe/know that we must perform GOOD WORKS in this life, to serve our God and fellow man - But in the end it is only by LOVE & the GRACE of God the Father & Jesus Christ that we are saved.

Singing Amazing Grace in a LDS chapel is not blasphemy.

You need to do a little bit of studying & soul-searching...

The LDS faith teaches that it is by GRACE that we are saved after all that we can do. For some reason, some LDS people seem to misunderstand that doctrine. Of course, "faith without works is dead" according to the Apostle Paul, but no matter how many good works we do we can never reach Heaven without the GRACE of our Saviour. THIS IS ESTABLISHED DOCTRINE!

I can't imagine why anyone would think it was blasphemy to sing this song at an LDS event. Unlesss, of course, it is just someone who is trying to stir up a debate.

Believe What You Will

It is obvious that you Mormons do nut understand the Christian doctrine of grace any more than you understand the Holy Trinity.

I defy you to research your own church's historic doctrinal teaching on grace and why this song is not approved as an LDS hymn.

I would further urge you to come to Christ and the true Christian faith and leave behind the blasphemies taught by Joseph Smith.

Grace is power from on-high. It is truly amazing that the Grace of our Lord can save us from our sins as we truly repent and believe on his name (for if we fail to change, we fail ourselves). It is such a beautiful hymn. How sweet the sound of our Lord's voice by way of the Holy Spirit that saved a wretch like me (called me to repentance). I was in the deepest abyss (lost), but now am found; I was truly blind, but now I see (better). I believe in the grace of our Lord. It's not blasphemy to sing the praises of our Lord's work (that amazing grace); "...for we know that it is by grace that we are save...."

BTW, the standards of a fireside are not the same as for a sacrament meeting.

To Believe What You Will

And you are reading an LDS online newspaper because...?

Glenn Smith

FYI- The Mormon Tabernacle Choir recorded "Amazing Grace" twice. First, in 1996, on an album/CD titled "Amazing Grace", and again in 2009, on a CD titled "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing: American Folk Hymns & Spirituals". Also, it was recorded by MTB organists in 2006 on "Now Let Us Rejoice: Organ Hymns For The Sabbath". That is sufficient endorsement of acceptance by the Church for this 'wretch'. As for a discussion of grace vs. works, there really is no discussion. As noted by others, both are necessary. That is 'historic doctrinal teaching' that 'Believe What You Will' urges us to find.

We Mormons do put a lot of emphasis on service and works (as did the Savior), but we know works won't save us. Anyone who thinks their works are the main (or only) ticket they need for salvation should check the scriptures. Mormon doctrine clearly teaches that salvation will only occur through the grace and mercy of Jesus. We read it in the scriptures, we hear it from inspired leaders, and we sing it in our hymns.

I will agree with 4:16 above that we don't understand the Christian doctrine of the Trinity. I'm still looking for anyone, Catholic or Protestant, who does. Rather than try to understand the outcome of a two or three century debate that culminated in the quite confusing and non-biblical Nicene Creed, I prefer the reliability of revelation to God's prophets as found in the scriptures.

Wow what a tangent

So back to... McCall... You go girl! And just like Sharpey Evans you are FABULOUS! (watch HMS2 again and look for the blonde back up singer you might understand my joke a little better:) )

So why does every Deseret News article evolve into a theological debate? This was a great story about a talented singer. I recommend that those individuals who have theological problems with our church should find another forum--not a Deseret News story that is written primarily for LDS members. Mahalo.
