Fantastic idea! I wish all shelters did this!
This is a better idea than trusting people to spay and neuter their pets themselves.
The surgery will help prevent unwanted pet population, with less heartbreaking need to put pets down.
Now if we could just encourage all Shelters do take this responsible course. I have two tiny pedigreed dogs and I am horrified that so many people actually tell me how upset that I had them neutered at 12 weeks because they could produce highly sought after puppies and I could make lots of money. Breeding just to make money is just wrong. Both my babies were puppy mill rescues and I paid a lot of money for them but to the rescue organization so that they could continue their work to save and protect other animals. They also insisted that I neuter and I was glad to do so.
I agree wholeheartedly with you that breeding pets just to make money is wrong when we have so many abandoned pets who need homes.
I applaud you for supporting rescue organizations, especially those that require spaying and neutering.
In Texas it is state law that any and all animals adopted out of a shelter be spay/neutered before leaving the shelter. Its time for shelters around the US to stop trusting people with vouchers and taking responsibility for the pet overpopulation. Anyone who even thinks of breeding their pet, should be made to spend the day watching euthansia's happen over and over again. And by-the-way, breeding includes "unexpected" pregnancies of your cat or dog.
